THE SILENCE THAT FOLLOWED CAMILLE’S QUESTION WAS fraught with nervous energy, holding a tension so heavy that Ari’s smile crumpled under its weight. The child had failed to mind the manner of her words, to remember to speak as properly as her clumsy tongue would allow—and while addressing an adult, no less!

Perhaps she was simply too lax—to comfortable—around Camille. Specific sounds made Ari feel like some invisible force was holding down her voice, as if all the things she wanted to say were too big for her little throat. The more syllables a word had, the more the letters would tumble around in her mouth like an excited family of roly-polies. Sometimes she could force it, and rarely, the word would come out perfectly whole; it was more common for it to turn into a choppy thing, mere pieces of a thought. In turn, Ari had developed a passive habit of creating her own shortcuts, which often came in the form of a nickname.

This is precisely how Ari found herself in this current bit of trouble.

Cammie. Not Camille, not Mister Camille, not even just Mister—Ari had called him Cammie, and from the sound of his reaction, she wasn’t entirely sure that affectionate nickname had pleased him.

Tiny fingers met at the center of her chest, thumbs twiddling nervously as she tried to find her words. MORE words. Better words, hopefully ones that won’t complicate things further. The best course of action, Ari had quietly decided, was to answer him honestly. That seemed like a good first step.

“ I … I sss … I said Cammie … I did …”

“ I … I WOULD LIKE TO PLLL … TO PLUH … TO PLAY A GAME WITH NATA. I would. ”

“ MMM … MAY I COUNT ROO-JI’S SQUA … squi … his sque … rrr— ”

ARI HAD ASKED SIX PATRONS, FOUR WAITRESSES, ONE MANAGER, and even a stray cat that lingered near the front door of the diner; the lost camera didn’t belong to any one of them. It was strange, how such a lovely little thing supposedly had no home … No, it must be a mistake. Of course it was a mistake. This Lovely Little Thing certainly has a place, somewhere to belong … After all, it seems too precious of a treasure to be permanently LOST.  

Ari felt sure of this, and that powerful certainty fueled the child’s determination to find the camera’s proper owner. With tiny arms that held the device carefully and securely—she refused to allow any harm to come to the camera, even that which might be brought upon by her own clumsy feet—Ari weaved through the tight aisles of the diner, diligently searching for any lingering people.

It was only when Ari approached the final booth found at the very back of the diner that she had spotted a stray patron. A young man, bent forward with his head tucked under the table, precariously balancing all his weight on one knee as it pressed into the seat of the booth. Ari made a soft, curious noise, one that came from the excitement that began to bubble in her tummy. The man seemed to be searching for something. Could it be … ?

“ e … excuse me, "Ari began, but her voice seemed too small to reach his ears. One protective hand pressed the camera against her little chest, while the other slowly reached out to gently tug on the hem of the stranger’s sleeveless jacket.

“ th – the cam’ra … thhh … this one … i … it’s misser’s, peas? ”

A MEDITATIVE PRACTICE INDEED, one that Ari found immensely silly. The tickle of his fur against her freckled skin made her giggle, but otherwise, the child sat completely still, letting Fenrir morph her squishy face into whatever shape he pleased.

“ fff … Fnnir, ” Guppy Ari said through pinched lips. “ i … is fuzzy … hi .. hish hanshs. ”

@jukudoku sent: less for the outright intent to entertain and more a continuation of countless years of practice, there are objects that (every now and then) seem to be newly tossed into the air. and if ari looks a little closer, she'll see why: they're being juggled. nothing scary is being thrown around, a pinecone here, a small rock there, but mostly roughly-fist-sized bouncy balls being tossed into the air as fluidly as everything else. none of the motion stops, but the being at the root of it does tilt his head just-so upon noticing the child, curious. will you approach, little one? or will you turn away?

THE OBJECTS SEEMED TO CARTWHEEL ON THE AIR while the stranger worked his magic, as if their spinning and twirling was their own special part of the performance. For someone like Ari, who lacked the coordination for most basic movements, that’s exactly what the juggling appeared to be: pure magic. An impossible skill for the average person. In fact, Ari found the stranger’s fluid movements so utterly mesmerizing that she failed to notice anything else about him. She was dazzled, charmed, DELIGHTED.

“ ooo … ”

Had his spell not been this impressively powerful, little Ari may have found herself deterred by his razor-sharp smile and his hollow, menacing eyes. Instead, she gave no notice to the stranger’s otherness and surrendered herself entirely to the magnetic pull of his performance. She almost closed the space between them completely to get the closest look—almost, for even when dazzled, charmed, and delighted, Ari was too well-mannered to do anything with total abandon. A bit of room was left as Ari curled into cross-legged position on the floor, though her gaze never drifted from the stranger’s skillful hands. The child would not turn away, for the child did not fear enough.

“ i … is good, ” Ari cheered, her sweet face stretched by her toothy grin. “ vvv … very, very! mmm … misser is re … is really good! ”

“ I … I love misser … ”

SHE'S BEAMING AT THE WOMAN. LITERALLY BEAMING.
