A poem should be a house, the door unlocked. You let yourself inside. You hear, in some room down the hallway, whispering. A piano. Laughter. Muffled crying. You walk to the room. You open the door, and inside is the thing you always feared. Inside is the person you love. The person who never loved you. The person who died. Yourself. Hanging flowers. A box of melted snow. Inside is the thing you did not know you were going to find. It surprises you. The poem is the journey down the hallway–the heart, thudding; the mystery, the anticipation, the hope, the unknown, the unknown. Its purpose is the thing behind the door.
“Give me the names for things, just give me their real names, Not what we call them, but what They call themselves when no one’s listening–”
— Charles Wright, from “The Writing Life” in Appalachia

I have spent too much time focused on yesterdays. How I should have done something different or made a more productive choice. Too many nights I’ve spent going over each decision, wondering if I could have made a better one. And although reflection is important, I think trusting myself and leaning into the present is so, so much more important. There’s only so much we can dissect the past before it becomes unrecognizable. We are not here to make perfect choices all the time. We gotta live and explore (and REST and recharge). We gotta jump into uncertainty without judging or being too hard on ourselves. Some days will be awesome and some will be shitty and a lot will be filled with little annoyances and frustrations. How do we choose to move forward? How do we shake off yesterday’s rainwater and step into today’s sunlight? How do we stop analyzing every decision and just let life happen? I think the first step is to find power in the present and recognize these habits. Owning our unconscious tendencies and putting in the work to make them conscious, intentional decisions. It’s okay to have bad days and it’s okay to make imperfect choices, but how do we move into tomorrow? That’s where the magic happens 💫

Repeat after me:
May the Universe continue to guide me into opportunities for growth, renewal, and love.
May my heart be filled with overflowing compassion for my life and the lives of all others.
May my spirit shed all of Her doubts and hesitations.
May I find abundance in each new day.
May I be at peace.
