another week of whatever the fuck this shit is
one of the best feelings tbh
So... I found this and now it keeps coming to mind. You hear about "life-changing writing advice" all the time and usually its really not—but honestly this is it man.
I'm going to try it.
I love the lawyer metaphor, because whenever I see “John knew that...” in prose writing I immediately think “how? How does he know it?” Interrogate your witnesses. Cross-examine them. Make them explain their reasoning. It pays dividends.
All of this, but also feels/felt. My editor has forbidden me from using those and it’s forced me to stretch my skills.
This is your "show not tell" advice explained!
Editor here.
First, let me preface this with something very important: you can treat all of this advice as SECOND-DRAFT ADVICE. It is so much easier to rewrite this kind of stuff once you have words on the page. Telling yourself the first draft is totally appropriate and acceptable.
What we’re talking about here are FILTER WORDS (and to some degree verbs of being). Yes, “thought” words are included. But so are “heard, saw, looked, tasted, smelled” etc.—most words having to do with the senses.
This isn’t black and white advice; sometimes you’ll use these words and that’s okay. They’re not WRONG. They’re just weaker. And they’re weaker because they create distance between the reader and the experience of the character.*
If you want your reader to feel like they’re experiencing the story right alongside the character, you want to cut down on filter words.
*This is particularly important with first person and close third POVs. The reader always knows whose eyes they’re seeing through and thoughts they’re privy to. So you don’t need to tell them “I saw X.” Or “I heard X.” Or “I thought Y.” You can just jump into the action/observation as it’s happening.
This is also where you want to pay attention to verbs of being.
“It was rainy.” Versus: “The rain pounded against the roof.” Or “The rain howled like an injured animal.” Or “The rain tapped against the window like an anxious lover.” All of these are inviting the reader deeper into the experience of the story by using stronger verbs and similes. And, at the same time, they stir feelings (instead of TELLING feelings). And feelings keep your reader engaged. Engaged readers keep turning pages; engaged readers become FANS.
Sorry I went off the grid, had finals and other school related things to deal with and slept all day on weekends :)

Bitches spend way Way WAY too much money on books just to put them on the shelf and read fanfiction instead because they have a problem and need serious help
It's me, I'm Bitches
Things my friends have said as Marauders quotes part 2:
Evan: You live and you learn
Barty: Unless, well… you die
Regulus: *facepalm*
March 27th
—
James subtly made an excuse to leave the Great Hall, praying no one noticed the quiver in his bottom lip or the way his voice wavered when he muttered. He quickly pushed through the large doors, stopping to take a shuttering breath.
It was March 27th.
It was his birthday.
Everyone seemed to have forgotten.
James tried to be understanding. He knew unimportant things tended to slip people’s minds, and everyone had so much going on. Sirius and Regulus had just fled Grimuald Place, taking up residence in the Potter home. Remus had a grim full moon and was still trying to heal. Merely two days ago Lily finally ended her friendship with Snape and it was taking a toll on her. Marlene and Dorcas were in the midst of an argument, and James had been mediating for them. His father had fallen ill, and his mother was busy taking care of him.
James understood that he wasn’t important right now. He began to think it over as he walked, coming to the conclusion that what was important right now was taking care of his friends, which he didn’t mind. He took the burning that spread to his throat and pushed it down whilst drying his damp eyes on the collar of his robes. He was almost to the Gryffindor common room when he heard footsteps quickly approaching behind him.
“James!” the wild-haired blonde called, stopping in front of him to catch her breath.
“Is everything okay Marlene?” James asked, plastering a fake smile on his face. The worried look that followed came naturally when he saw how out of breath she was.
“Marlene, do try to breathe please,” he jokingly chastised, moving a hand to her back in an effort to steady her.
“M’sorry. I ran the- the whole way here,” she shuddered out then hunched over, placing her hands on her knees. “You walk too fast.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No, no. Don’t apologize. Walk this way with me? I want to tell you about something,” she replied with a poorly hidden mischievous smile.
“Oh, um, alright.”
Once she was breathing properly again the two set off, slowly making their way around the corner. There was a long stretch of silence before Marlene spoke.
“Dorcas and I made up. I realized I was wrong.”
James stopped walking and looked at her.
“Who are you and what have you done to Marlene?”
“Oh shut it,” she giggled, playfully smacking his arm. “I only have you to thank. You always do so much for us. Sometimes I forget to thank you, and I am sorry for that.”
“Okay, seriously, where did you come from? Where is the real Marlene? You’re getting all sappy on me,” James joked again, this time with a real smile creeping onto his face.
“Hey, what can I say, you bring out the best in me. All of us really.”
James settled on just nodding, the words processing in his brain. They continued to walk in comfortable silence, soon returning to the Gryffindor common room portrait.
“James?” Marlene called while gently opening the passageway.
“Yeah?”
“Happy birthday.”
James was immediately welcomed by a room full of almost all the people he loved, a chorus of Happy Birthdays soaring around the room. His chest swelled with a warm bubbly feeling, and a face-splitting grin spread across his face. Sirius immediately had him in a bone-crushing embrace, damp eyes pressing into his neck.
“You have no idea how hard it was to hide this from you.”
“I can imagine,” James joked, smiling brightly at the other boy.
Remus approached them, looking quite pleased with himself.
“Happy birthday Prongs,” he called, moving to settle next to Sirius.
“Thank you Moony. I presume this was your idea?”
“Me? No. That person is waiting for you upstairs.”
“Oh?”
“Might want to head up there soon. They aren’t a big fan of waiting.”
“Remus who is-“ Sirius began, earning an elbow to the ribs. “Ow!”
“I’ll tell you later.”
James laughed at their antics and then headed to the dormitory stairs. He tried to go up slowly but anticipation got the best of him. He quickly arrived at the door, taking a moment to compose himself before gently swinging it open.
In the middle of the room stood Regulus with candles and various handmade decorations strewn around him. Under him was a blanket and basket, and his hands held a gift wrapped in newspaper.
James felt the air leave his lungs, stuck in a state of awe.
“Happy birthday James,” Regulus anxiously breathed, subtly playing with his silver rings.
James brightly beamed at him, making his way over and scooping him into a tight embrace.
“You remembered.”
“Of course, I remembered mon Cheri,” he breathed, holding James just as tight. “I spent all day working on this. I bribed Marlene with toffee to run all the way here to stop you.”
James chuckled wetly, the joy he was feeling trickling down his cheeks. Regulus pulled back slightly to cup the other boy's face in his hands, slowly wiping the tears with his thumbs.
“Thank you, Reg. This means the world to me.”
“I would give you the world,” Regulus reminded him, rolling onto the balls of his feet to reach up and plant a kiss on his lover’s forehead. “You shouldn’t stay here long. I wouldn’t want Sirius to find out about us on your birthday. I’m sure everyone wants to see the birthday boy, I had to threaten so many people to stay quiet. I even bribed your owl,” he continued, fishing a card out of his pocket.
James quickly opened it, scanning the lovely calligraphy that belonged to his mother.
“You even got Effie to keep this from me? What did you offer her, doing the dishes?”
Regulus stifled a laugh in his sleeve.
“I actually did.”
“Oh my God,” James blushed, hiding his head in his hands.
Regulus gently grasped his wrist and pulled his hands from his face.
“Let’s enjoy your picnic yeah? I heard you didn’t each much. I’m sorry to have caused you so much distress. You mentioned you always wanted a surprise party so I figured why not this year?” Regulus mentioned, a hint of anxiety in his voice.
“It’s perfect Regulus. This means so much to me. I’m okay, I promise,” James reassured.
“Perfect. I even got your favorite,” Regulus smiled as he knelt to begin unpacking the basket.
James plopped down beside him, sitting closer than reasonable for a picnic but neither boy cared.
“Those lovely crepes with the caramel and bananas?”
“Precisely.”
James faux cheered to emphasize his excitement earning a loud laugh from Regulus.
“Gods I love you.”
James froze. This was new territory.
“You do?”
“Of course I do. I know it’s soon but, there’s just, so much about you and, well, I’m not entirely sure how to articulate it but-“
“I love you too.”
The two boys smiled admiringly at each other. James decided at that moment this was the best birthday he had ever had.

Conversation I had with a friend this morning before ACT testing as the Marauders era characters:
Pandora: I brought my crystals. This is a carnelian palm stone for confidence and snowflake obsidian for protection.
Regulus: protection from what? A zero?
Evan: ..
Regulus: Are you warding off the bad scores???

reblog to give somebody a fucking hug because we are all struggling to get through it. solidarity in this tough ass world.
My Art Appreciation Professor gave us an assignment where we have to appropriate the Mona Lisa through a photograph of a friend, editing or revising a picture of the Mona Lisa by changing her look, or writing a story about her.
I’m stuck between writing a cute little poem or an angsty story about her wanting to survive beyond her time and slowly realizing she’ll only be ever known as the woman in the painting, not as a person. Maybe she’ll fall in love with Da Vinci, but he’ll just use her for fame? Who knows
I’ll be posting whatever I end up doing :)
I heard rumors of those wild shippers who shipped a pairing that had never been shown to interact in canon but I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BECOME ONE.

Birthdays
Regulus never really cared for his birthday, always stuck spending it at number 12 Grimmauld Place. The first time June 25th arrived after he ran away, he was surrounded by people who genuinely cared about him, his lovely boyfriend smiling brightly at him, encouraging him to blow out his birthday candles. The cake they sat upon was baked by Euphemia, who assured him it was no fuss. Sirius was there, passing him a terribly wrapped gift and tearing up, finally able to give him something without fear lingering in the distance. Barty and Evan showed, wreaking havoc, popping balloons, and making a mess. Regulus gave Sirius and James nervous glances, but they assured him Fleamont and Euphemia didn’t mind the commotion. Remus got him a new journal, to replace the one he lost when he left. Marlene and Dorcas picked out a new set of pens for him, saying he should really give up on quills, Marlene giggling behind her girlfriend who knowingly looked at him. Pandora got him new crystals, giving her condolences to the ones he had to leave behind. Lily and Mary got him a book set, claiming he needed to learn the ways of muggle literature. He glared at them but was unable to hide his excitement for very long.
During the small party, the only thing Regulus could do was helplessly smile, occasionally excusing himself to the washroom to cry. He had never felt so cherished, so loved in his entire life. He finally understood why people got so excited about birthdays- it was supposed to be filled with love. When the night winded down, and people began to disperse, leaving through a chorus of ‘Happy Birthdays’ and ‘see you soon,’ James found Regulus sitting on a sofa, looking quite exhausted. A faint smile adorned his tired features, his face brightening at the sight of the other man. James beamed back, pulling a gift from behind his back.
Regulus quietly accepted the small box, gently unwrapping it. He flipped open the lid, finding a slim chain with a sun attached to it. He looked up to James, the other man now holding a similar necklace, a star taking the place of his sun.
“You always call me your ray of sunshine, so I thought you should be able to have a little piece of me with you everywhere.”
“I love it, James,” Regulus replied, tears welling in his eyes.
James sat on the couch beside him, gently taking the necklace and putting it on the other boy. He watched as Regulus wrapped his fingers around it, holding the cold metal tightly in his palm. He moved his arm to wrap his shoulder, bringing his lover in close.
They stayed there a while, Regulus soaking up the love James would supply endlessly. Regulus learned to love his birthday, not because he received things, but because it meant he got to be surrounded by those who truly loved him.
—
My friends were wonderful today. Birthdays can be rough but they make them better. Thank you for reading lovelies. And thank you to my wonderful friends.
Happy Birthday
Regulus woke to an empty bed, a slight scowl embellishing his sharp features. Before he could sulk over the absence of his lover, the man in question walked back into the room. He was holding a tray containing a plate of food and a mug, an apron draped over his muscular frame. It caused the younger man to giggle fondly, a large smile growing on his face as he sat up to lean against the pillows and headboard.
“Happy birthday Darling,” James cooed, his bright smile washing away all of Regulus’ trepidations.
“You didn’t have to do all this Mon Chéri,” he whispered as James set the tray down over his lap.
“I know love. I wanted to,” the older man replied simply.
And oh, that made a spark of something Regulus was growing very familiar with spread from his chest to every atom of himself: love. He loved the man in front of him with every fiber of his being and prayed to whatever is in the sky that he’ll forever have him, in every lifetime.
“We’ll do everything you want today. You make all the decisions,” James announced, going to his dresser and pulling out a small parcel. The wrapping was done in newspapers and tied with twine. Regulus treasured it already.
“Mon Chéri, you didn't have to get me something,” Regulus whispered, accepting the gift but hesitating to open it.
“Darling I wanted to. Open it, yeah?”
Regulus nodded, and gently untied the twine. He pulled away the newspaper, uncovering a limited edition signed copy of The Secret History- his favorite book.
“Oh. My. God. Where did you get this? How did you get it?”
“I made a few phone calls,” James sheepishly replied, rubbing the back of his head.
Regulus gently moved the tray before flinging himself onto James, engulfing him in a hug.
“Thank you,” he whispered into the crook of James’ neck.
“Anything for my bright and shiny star.”
