DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist playing Afrika Bambaataaâs records
Last yearâs âRenegades of Rhythmâ was the first Shadow+Chemist tour that I didnât attend out of the four theyâve done (Brainfreeze, Product Placement, The Hard Sell were the first three), and I kind of regret missing out now. As a duo, they play some of the best all-around party rocking sets youâll ever hear. Not to mention the high degree of difficulty cutting up vinyl (especially the 45s) and playing in sync with one another.Â
Check out the full show from the last stop on their tour, in Oakland at the Fox Theatre. Looks like they shot some of it with old tape stock or something to get that 80s look in. Dope slide show/visuals as their backdrop to match the beats as well.Â
This short film documents the recording of Owiny Sigoma Bandâs 3rd album Nyanza.
This unique band is made up of 3 Londoners (brothers Louis and Jesse Hackett, and their school friend Tom Skinner and 2 elderly gentleman from Kenya, Joseph and Charles - both masters of traditional Luo instruments, the Nyatiti and the Nyidoungue Drums respectively Although the band have recorded in both Nairobi and London this film documents the first time the Londoners have travelled upcountry to the small village outside of Kisumu where Joseph and Charles come from, to meet their families and play a special show for the villagers, followed by an all night celebration. The trip also saw them create field recordings which have formed the basis of their forthcoming album, Nyanza. The process is documented as well as the bandâs individual perspectives on this cross cultural and cross generational project.Â

Bendik Kaltenborn & Espen Fribergâs brilliant animated video for Todd Terjeâs âAlfonso Muskdunderâ
"Nearly thirty years after the label closed its doors, a mysterious box of tapes turned up at an estate sale in Columbus, OH. Originally thought to be the lost Prix masters, it was instead discovered to be dozens of demos, rehearsals and a few finished songs recorded in Harmonic Soundsâ prime. The tape boxes were for the most part unmarked; creating a puzzle that would require some time to solve. Penny & the Quartersâ âYou And Meâ is a random rehearsal by a group no one can remember but, one more song we wouldn't let be forgotten." (via Numero Group)
...
Presumably teenagers at the time, Penny & The Quarters were invited to audition by Harmonic Sounds Studio in Columbus, Ohio, recording three demo songs in all. The group consisted of a female lead with three or four male backup singers and an accompanying guitarist. Like the singers, the name of the songs' composers are not known.[1]
The songs were recorded some time between 1970 and 1975 at either Harmonic Sounds Studio or at the home of studio co-owner Clem Price in Columbus. Relegated to storage, the songs were discovered after Price's death in 2006 when a collection of tapes and acetate records was purchased at his estate sale. They were subsequently given to an archival record company, The Numero Group, after a Columbus, Ohio musicologist came into possession of the recordings.
One of the songs they recorded, "You And Me" was released by Numero Group and was later heard by actor Ryan Gosling, who recommended it to the director Derek Cianfrance as the song meant to bring the two lead characters together in Blue Valentine.
Numero Group announced in 2011 that they were actively seeking members of Penny & The Quarters or their surviving relatives in order to share the growing record royalties from "You And Me". Ken Shipley of Numero Group told reporters, "we have played this recording to over 100 movers and shakers from the time and no one has a clue."

Yogi Horton was an in demand session drummer from the 70's and 80's that played with Luther Vandross and many other great artists of the time. He left us too soon at the age of 33. This is a clip from an instructional video in which he breaks down groove drumming. His words are as meaningful as his playing.

Raekwon with the illest riff on the hook of Rose Royseâs âWishing On A Starâ.Â
Check out this ill behind-the-beats footage of Bulgarian electronic producer, KiNK, messing with his analog gear setup for his forthcoming album, âUnder Destructionâ. His arsenal of analog synths, sequencer, FX box, and filters, make for some spaced out goodness.
A great short doc on the recently re-issued and re-discovered Nigerian musician, William Onyeabor. Always interesting to hear the backstories on such elusive and enigmatic talent. From You Need To Hear This, Noisey: "âŚâFantastic Manâ a documentary investigating Nigerian musician William OnyeaborâŚthe film tells the story of a labelâs attempt to track William down, speaking to fans such as Damon Albarn, Caribou and Femi Kuti and travelling to Nigeria to meet those whoâve worked with him in a bid to uncover the truth about his story."
