How is Lao oblivious to see how strong Toph is?
I think it comes from a place of willful ignorance. Lao raised Toph to be a certain way, to be a well mannered quiet "young lady". Toph did try to perform that idealised version of herself he wanted to see, she was a child trying to please her parents after all, so I can't really blame her.
And when she didn't conform, he immediately fell into denial. At first he convinced himself that she still needed protection, then that she was kidnapped by Aang instead of choosing to go with him. And when he couldn't deny her strangth any longer, he outright disowned her.
Tale as old as time, really. Parent has rigid standards for child, child fails to meet them, fallout ensues. It's a story not just disabled people can relate to but folks of different kinds of backgrounds. (Including myself. I was raised with the Polish proverb "children, like fish, have no voice" drilled into my skull lmao.)
It's important to note that Lao's approach to Toph's upbringing also reeks of misogyny. Especially Lao raising Toph to be this demure, delicate "young lady".
It's hard to say whether, if Toph were a boy, Lao would dote on her quite as much. But I'm sure there'd be less pressure on her to supress her emotions and conform to the restraining societal norms placed on women and girls in her location and time period.
It's actually very interesting to see Toph's relationship with femininity, and with Katara through the lense of the constant mix of abelist and misogynistic rhethorics Toph was raised with.
There's a lot more nuance and hidden depth with Toph, then people give them credit, she's so fun to pick apart!
too many people make big dumb barbarian rather than a quick witted warrior who's rebelling against a system that suppresses young budding women who have power to be a powerful earthbender or warrior.
Toph isn't stupid, far from it, she's smart enough to trick an entire town for days, and was smart enough to fool her parents for years. she finally gets a chance to be herself and takes it, hence why she seems so brutish and Tomboy, it's a big middle finger to the "Conceal don't feel" lifestyle she was raised in
The person I reblogged this from deserves happiness and love

I know the most emotional tale in Avatar Last Airbender tends to be Iroh's tale, especially because it's in honor and memory of his original VA, Mako! Iroh's my favorite character hands down. Toph too!
So, a scene I think about A LOT and get emotional to in ATLA is Katara & Toph's tale in Ba Sing Se. Specifically, after when Katara and Toph go to the spa and get their well-deserved break! They treat themselves to an awesome makeover and feel pretty. What's heartbreaking is that within 20 seconds (I counted) of them walking out of the spa and mentioning how they feel girly and good about themselves, they encounter a group of bullies who say, "Nice makeup", to which Toph thanks them, and they follow with, "... for a clown!" 20. SECONDS. They only had 20 seconds outside where they felt pretty, to be put down soon after. This results in Toph and Katara getting revenge and having a nice bonding moment afterwards.
It just bothers me and actually makes me cry every time I watch it. I know that's weird to admit, but bullying someone, especially a badass blind/disabled person, and making them not feel pretty when they were feeling pretty about themselves... just hurts really badly. I also know it's fiction, but it seems incredibly telling of a society we are when open-handed comments like that are thrown about carelessly, without ANY consideration of how the receiving end would feel, and how it would ultimately and potentially affect their entire day. Toph knows who she is deep down, the strongest bender around, and I think we all know who we are deep down to an extent, so it just sucks when people assume things about you and put their energy into putting you down unnecessarily. Be kind, have empathy! It's not hard! Women as a whole deserve to feel pretty about themselves and feel safe. We need to stop putting each other down.
I tear up the moment Toph has a tear fall from her face, because it's a sharpened painful tear from a lifetime of emotional burden. You can tell it really hurt. I'm gonna be there like Katara is for Toph, for all my friends and loved ones, always.
If anyone ever put you down for your appearance, how you dress, how you present yourself in any way, or for your disability/race/orientation, know for a fact that you're beautiful. Don't let any carelessly thrown about remark define you.
Toph is very insecure about her looks because she can't see, so to see this actually hurt her and made her cry, makes glad they got revenge, but damn, son, you've written you one way ticket to hell for making Toph cry like that

Sokka: Toph there’s a cockroach outside the bathroom, can you please get rid of it?
Sokka: Toph please hurry up I’m going to cry.
Sokka: Toph?
Toph: Toph is dead. You’re next, love cockroach.
Toph being affectionate by clinging to people's arms is still adorable.
headcanon that nobody can scold her because she will give them the kicked puppy eyes, she's blind, not dumb and knows how to make it work.
Torn between Toph sneezing like a kitten or sneezing loud like an elephant
AU? honestly instead of them making Toph a horrible mother, she should have been amazing to her kids, but still had to learn a lot from both her kids and her friends, and she'd make mistakes and blame herself and think she's been awful to them. If they needed her to be absent then why not give Toph the mufasa treatment. Make her wonderful, the strongest thing her girls know only for that to be all taken away while she's saving their lives. mostly thinking about how badly this would affect Lin as a chief of police, she's then have be constantly reminded of her mother's death and legacy as it haunts her.
There is much talk about Toph’s inventing metalbending, and she is clearly an absolute genius, but you know what I love about her even more?
Toph’s response to not being able to control sand absolutely perfectly (as in hold up a sinking tower with one hand and fight off a gang of sandbenders with the other) is to work on her sandbending until she’s fully in control of every speck of dirt.
She is so wonderfully stubborn - she pursues bending not as a tool to defeat someone or gain power, but just to prove that she can do it. She’s the basic researcher of earthbending - just keeps pushing the limits of what can be done with no mind to the practical application.
I want to see if Toph can bend like mineral water or bend the salt out of sea water and other applications, because she really does use her bending as an extension of herself, it's not just a weapon to her, she is the earth, she uses it to express herself in ways she couldn't do otherwise because of her being blind.
Toph learning about fossils and prehistoric animals, using earthbending to sense them, and find out more. all of this, her bending is a part of her. She can even bend space rocks and metals for crying out loud.
Toph bending the iron in someone's blood to help clean it would be intresting too, I don't think she'd ever do that to hurt someone

I'm reading the ATLA comics for the first time (after a genuinely insane amount of rewatches of the show) and this picture of Toph is my favorite thing ever
Toph being adorable and trying her best is what makes this so wholesome, She is adorable and cute and deserves to just let herself be herself like this.
I wonder who drew that Zuko? her big toothy grin, pleas we love this
i think the reason people mischaracterize toph as excessively violent or as callous & unfeeling is that they don't get what the show was trying to do with the concept of neutral jing. yes, toph is often the first person to jump into action when battle's involved and the last person to speak up when there's a serious emotional issue or discussion to be had, but that's because her main skill is listening & observation. her seismic sense means she can sense a physical threat earlier than other people, but when it comes to emotional issues or ethical dilemmas she wants to wait until she's heard the full story. she's not first to violence because she's aggressive, it's because she's observant. she's not last to speak up because she doesn't care, it's because she's listening and waiting for the right moment to jump in. she's also fiercely independent (as a rebellion against her parents), and she offers others the same courtesy. she doesn't want people in her business telling her how to live her life so she won't do that to you.
toph's arc is about learning she doesn't have to be so independent, that she can accept help from others and be part of a team. but it's not that she starts out not caring about other people. it's that her idea of respect is shaped by what she wishes was offered to her. she learns you can accept help & care from others and that still means they respect you and see you as a full person.
listening and observing, waiting for the right moment to act, isn't cold or callous or violent. it just means that if you aren't paying attention, the only time you'll notice her is when she leaps into action or gives her blunt opinion, and you'll miss the thoughtful consideration that got her there
Toph isn't a mindless muderhobo, she's a bit of playful gremlin who likes pranking people and messing with them, but she never wants to legit hurt people for no good reason, she was joking about getting back at Zuko, she's actually very loyal to her friends, and if she had to choose between letting herself be killed to save her friends or keep fighting and guarantee they all die, she will consider throwing herself at it like she did when she threw herself at Sokka and tackled him to the ground to protect him from Azula's fire blast. She's also very much the Gaang's guard dog, she's the first to attack someone when she can tell that they're a threat, she will charge in and protect them. She adores her friends and she'd do anything to keep them safe. she's not violent or uncaring, she's just constantly observing. she would have found Iroh's lesson about using other bending types in her own insightful and likely would have started observing it for herself and then trying it.
Toph honestly actually very calm and relaxed around people she trust and letting her walls down is amazingly adorable, I'm so glad that the Gaang managed to coax her out of her shell and into being a better version of herself. Her snarky rude self really is a defence mechanism she knows all too well.
Let her be emotional and remeber that she's not literally a rock, she needs comfort too.
I love wholesome Tokka, Toph was the Nala to Sokka's Simba and we need more of them just being trolls I wish LOK never fucked with Toph my girl deserved so much better, she didn't deserve to be mercilessly assassinated character wise, honestly love her too much for her to have a miserable ending like LOK. so let's say "fuck canon"
Toph raditatin enough goblin energy to likely have the editing and censorship team working overtime is just peak Toph

I am wondering if toko was canon how would the relationship between toph and lin be and what would lin end up doing as her job
Hi! Thanks for your question.
I suppose such an AU assumes that Zuko Is Lin's father, doesn't it? (honestly I see no obstacles to believe that it's true, and he is canonically is Lin's father (in LOK I mean). There is nothing that proves against it, I'm just saying).
Well, in AU where toko is canon and Toph marries Zuko and became a Fire Lady, lin is born is royal family and she is a princess. I think that canonically in LOK Lin was majorly influenced by fatherless childhood. She needed a father figure and full caring family more than Suyin.
In the world where Lin grow up with a father, her mother wouldn't be so estranged from raising kids. (although how Toph treats her kids in LOK looks like a complete OOC, no matter what)
I don't think that Lin would go to police. Her choice for police career was dictated by her desire to be as close as possible to her mother figure and by her need for order and discipline that she and her sister lacked in their childhood. I think that Fire Lady Toph would be Indulgent mother and would allow lots of things to her kids but wouldn't hide her emotions from kids like they showed in LOK. She would have more wide system of support and help of loving husband.
Zuko, on the contrary, I believe, would be firm and even strict father. So no lack of discipline for Lin, for sure. I think she would be father's daughter and would show interest in politics. She would study jurisprudence, law and law system. And later, in her 30s she would go in politics and I believe Fire Nation would get some nice progressive reforms because of her.
________
Let's talk about TOKO!
The Toph from the ending of AtLA would never do what she did her kids in LoK she would love them pieces, not spoil them, they'd still have freedom, but they will have to follow ground rules. Toph cared more about getting that love and approval she never got growing up, why would she make her kids go though the same thing? THIS WHY I LOVE THE ALTERNATE UNIVERSES
If you dare even think of hurting her children Toph goes momma bear on your ass and kicks it into the sun.
HC that Toph is like a cat and refuses to any weakness, so if she's injured of sick, you've got to know her very subtle changes. like her flinching or other small things, she's so good at hiding it that she's sometimes a bit more crabby then normal and will snap more easily.
