Jean-Michel Frank’s boutique at 140, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, Paris 1935.
Jean-Michel Frank (1895-1941), was a seminal designer of furniture and interiors, who’s aesthetic continues to influence present-day designers, and who’s furniture, including the iconic “Parsons table,” is regularly reproduced. While sometimes described as a “minimalist,” Frank’s use of materials and surfaces were luxurious and multi-layered, with an often surprising use of color. Parisian by birth (and a cousin of diarist Ann Frank), Jean-Michel Frank received important commissions from couturier Elsa Schiaparelli, the Born family in Buenos Aires (who’s mansion in that city remains intact as the greatest example of his work), and Nelson Rockefeller, for whom he created a sumptuous fifth Avenue apartment in 1937. While in New York City, and overcome by depression, Frank ended his life by throwing himself out of a Manhattan apartment window.
