For a contrast of how older sp episodes feel to the newest ones, let me compare 2 episodes with very real and different plots

- Ex 1. Cartman tries to get into Kyle’s birthday party at a popular restaurant/tourist attraction but is unable to because he is rude, when he finally does get invited it’s only IF Butters isn’t able to come, resulting in Cartman making Butters believe that Earth is about to be hit by a meteor and hides him so he can be safe from the very fake end of the world just so Cartman can have some fun.

- Ex 2. Randy moves his family to the countryside to start a weed business, making his wife and, especially, his kids unhappy, but gets help and support from Towlie and has his business go big, also Kyle, Cartman and Butters get involved with trying to find out who’s selling vapes to schoolkids.

Looking at these two plot lines, you can definitely tell which one is meant to be more realistic in the way “hey here’s a funny story about a kid who tries to join his friends party even though he’s an absolute jerk” and which one is supposed to be following the lines of “want to see a character who’s only been used for small but genuinely good sometimes comedy make his family miserable for the sake of 1 type of joke multiple times because lol adults love drugs and 420?”

1) its comedic value is largely predicated on our preexisting knowledge of the characters’ relationships, see: Clyde’s brattiness. Cartman’s demanding attitude and typically proud Kyle giving up to play along playing out as this odd parental dynamic between them. Whilst every character in the show can make a priest joke, or be at the end of them(Like when the priests come kidnap Clyde and Stan),  jokes that are character based like the one I’ve just described do not make sense to the same extent were they between say Shelly, Randy and Stan. When there’s this disconnect between the plot of the episode and the actual jokes in it(as its the case for most of this ep) it means things linger in your mind for a little bit but they’re not particularly memorable events. Anyone could’ve been kidnapped in Clyde and Stan’s place, and because they’re not actually affronting the situation in a fashion that’s unique or trascendental to their characters it would’ve made no difference to the plot
