I can't stop thinking about Lycaon in the "He who returns from the abyss" cutscene. Like, I think a lot about the entire clip (and rewatch it religiously) because of Hugo asking for praise ofc, but also a lot of Lycaon's body language in it is so telling of how he feels regarding Hugo, since this is all previous to their conversation and them making "peace" with the way they split.
Now, I mentioned on this post how Lycaon is loyal to Hugo even at this stage, and it shows in how he cares about his well being, but I want to go deeper about two specific things in that clip.
First, is how he rushes at Hugo when he sees him in that state.
I want to point out how he stops himself from touching him at first, because that's what's been making me crazy. Physical touch seems to be a big no-no now, when probably in the past he would've had no issue lifting Hugo's face to properly check on him.
Still, Lycaon's face cannot hide at all how distressed he is regarding Hugo, eyes scanning him entirely to try and understand what happened. Even his face looks so much kinder here; truly a vulnerable moment for Lycaon.
The second one is, to me, the best one; is this little tap on the back of the chair:
He's standing straight and at a loss of words, but that little tap is amazing. It's not a stretch for me to say he wanted to care for Hugo properly, seeing him so weak and playing it off as a joke even when it was evident he went through tremendous damage in both mind and body. This gesture shows how Lycaon is doing his best to keep his distance, because he's conscious they're not what they used to be, but again, his undying loyalty that makes him be at Hugo's side for whatever he needs shows; a habit he's trying to control.

Tbh while I loved the epilogue quest, my biggest beef with it is that despite it being focused on Mockingbird, and expands a bit on Lycaon's backstory, we still know very little about him?? Like yeah, sure, he formed Mockingbird with Hugo, but like... why? What happened to his family? Why does he have such a strong conviction for justice?? WHAT THE HELL IS HIS FIRST NAME???
Lycaon being in the wrong about Hugo is so painful to see while rewatching "Bury your tears with the past".
Every time he sees Hugo as someone who strayed from the right path I feel so bad for Hugo, because I know that's killing him. And this behavior only evidences what I consider to be Lycaon's biggest flaw (which also makes him a really interesting character!) and that is his self-righteousness. To have this perfect butler, who we know is but a perfectly crafted mask, and who knows and can do almost everything to be so blind and pass such harsh judgement. Mind you, Lycaon IS hurting. Making the choice of abandoning Hugo was the hardest for him, and yet his current behavior...
Of course, he was made to believe the worst of Hugo constantly, and he had his right to do so, and yet his condescending behavior after they meet again is what's so interesting and... Irritating. We, the player, can suspect Hugo is troubled, but a good person, and yet Hugo cannot stand that Lycaon keeps on switching from being kind and even friendly, to suspect his every move and thinks Hugo doesn't care for anyone but himself and his blood dripping goals.
That's why when we go "Lycaon has to do some groveling first" we are not ignoring the fact that Hugo lied to him, but we are reminding everyone that in every chance Lycaon had to doubt what he saw and the entire situation, he kept on firmly believing there was no chance for Hugo to ever be innocent.
In the end, that holier-than-thou attitude kind of backfires. Even Mayflower lied to him, and he was in cahoots with Hugo from the start. That entire situation has to force someone like Lycaon to rethink his self-righteousness and superiority.
Ah, but then there's Hugo, who only understood it wasn't right to let Lycaon keep believing a lie. Still, that doesn't erase Lycaon's present behavior. But the messiest part of it all? Hugo is hurt and resentful by this behavior of his constantly, and still, he holds onto the hope of having Lycaon back.
Y'know whats crazy? That even after their misunderstandings, their current shared resentment, and the hurt feelings, Lycaon cannot help still being loyal to Hugo.
If anything, he's actively restraining himself from it; it shows in the way he's constantly worrying over Hugo's health and well-being but won't let himself be overbearing, as that sense of "distrust" between them is still there. You can't get rid of that that easily, since so many years passed as they both believed the other was in the wrong. But if there's something Lycaon is, is loyal, and of course he would still be towards Hugo, even when he seems to ignore this on purpose.
But why would Lycaon restrain himself from showing loyalty to Hugo? Well, because as Hugo himself stated in a Trust event, because they're both "friends" and "nemeses" as of now. I also believe that, more than the guilt Lycaon might feel after finding out he left Hugo at his lowest and when he needed him the most, its an issue of seeing when Hugo would accept there's no need to still consider each other as "enemies".

- Some thirens can't have coffee because it causes heart issues
- Thirens that are fully covered with fur are called "beast thirens"
- They have sensitive hearing (most notably seen with Nekomata)
- Their tails are pretty sensitive
- They usually only let people they trust touch their tails (most notably seen with Ellen and Lycaon)
- Their fur is affected by their diet (tail fur included)
- Animals are naturally attracted to them (as seen with Lycaon and Seth, possibly others too but idk)
- They naturally have a higher ether aptitude than humans
- There are specific shampoos and massages for thirens
- Soap can cause their fur to knot
- Their ears/tails may move/twitch depending on how they feel
- They share multiple other traits with their normal animal counterparts, such as agility, dexterity, and more
- Thirens can shed
- Thirens can have allergies to their own fur when they shed
- Some thirens enjoy neck/head scratches
- There may be a law specific to protecting thirens, though I'm not 100% on this
And that's not all, as there is actually quite a bit of obvious discrimination against thirens such as:
- Sterotypes are casually said to the faces of thirens
- Some people view them as "dangerous creatures"
- Some accommodations aren't available to thirens (most notably the issue with movie theatre seats when it comes to bear thirens)
- Being harassed on the street by people who want to touch their tails (or even in Lycaon's case, a child wanting to ride on his back)
- Thirens in movies often don't get played by actual thirens, and instead by humans or bangboo
- In these movies, they're often times shown as dangerous
- Maybe I'm looking too into this one, but I find it weird that a large majority of bear thirens work at Belobog Industries
There are just so many things you can find out about thirens in this game and it makes me wanna ask so many questions. How do they exist? Why are only some thirens fully furred? What's with all the casual discrimination against them? Why are there so many different species of thiren? Why does someone like Nekomata have 2 tails instead of the standard 1? I genuinely hope the game goes more into the factors of thirens and especially the discrimination of them as I'm curious just what the full extent of it is
