Before we go to the airwaves of 2015, let's end 2014 first with a bang and with a little pang of what DZUP Radio Circle has done in the past year. A lot of internal and external activities and events were held by the organization and it couldn't be more active than ever. 

DZUP RC started the year big with Elevate 2.0, the second installment of the student journalism workshop for high school students, last January 2014. A little over 300 students from all over Metro Manila attended the whole-day event as they learned from the journalism's finest such as Sir Robert Alampay, and young but promising student journalists, RC alumni and the like.

DZUP RC did not stop as they mounted a bigger event and it's College Collision: Reac7ivate, a collegiate battle of the bands that showcases the future of the Filipino music industry, last March 2014. In line with this year's theme of empowering OPM to the younger audience, popular OPM band Up Dharma Down graced the center-stage and gave the audience a very feels-y night.

To end the academic year 2013-2014, DZUP RC had to say goodbye to graduating students of the organization as they face the real world with relevance and competence. The event served as a sem-ender and it was an overnight full of fun and memorable activities. 

Over the surprising 4-month school break, DZUP RC did not stop working for their programs but at the same time planning for their return with a grander and better line up of events. The academic year 2014-2015 started with the search for the next voices to be heard in the organization. With the theme "Dare To Be On-Air", 20 potential new faces dared and once again diverse coming from different colleges and institutes in UP Diliman.

On October 2014, DZUP RC prepped up immediately for RC Week 2014: Back Track as they celebrate their 9th year on-air.There were events for everyone such as Replay: Boses ng Estudyante Strip Podcast, Life in Color Exhibit, UPCurrents Launch, For The Record: Radio Talk by Monster RX 93.1 DJs, RC Gives Back, Grand Pakain, and Elevate 3.0

Striking while the iron is hot, DZUP RC delivered the third installment of the student journalism workshop for high school students, Elevate 3.0 Uncover: Seeing The Truth in Journalism. Popular names in the industry such as Ms. Maeanne Los Banos, Sir Anjo Bagaoisan, and Ms. Jing Castaneda taught and inspired the budding journalists of this nation. 

  And in accordance to the season of giving, DZUP RC initiated RevUp, a series of tutorial sessions for high school students in Barangay Sauyo, Quezon City in preparation for the National Achievement Test or NAT. It started this December 2014 and will continue to the first quarter of 2015.

The future is looking bright for DZUP RC as the new year comes. In behalf of the whole organization, thank you for making our 2014 a historical one. Expect us to deliver more as we reach closer and closer to the celebration of our 10th year anniversary. 

The year may be almost over, but not our podcast! The Boses ng Estudyante Strip has two NEW episodes just for you!

That is a wrap for DZUP Radio Circle’s 9th anniversary celebration, which recently concluded this month of October! The lined up events garnered positive responses and big turnouts from the students and faculty of UP Diliman.

1.            Replay

The best of the Boses ng Estudyante (BNE) Strip, DZUP RC’s flagship program lineup, unleashed itself last September 29. DZUP programs Lakwachika, Samahang Bidang Bida, Ikaw Naman, and Student YOUniverse are now online, and anyone can access the episodes anytime, anywhere. Avid listeners of the BNEStrip got a flashback of their favorite moments with the radio programs. The online podcast will be updated every month with freshly picked episodes.

2.            Life in Color

Music, videos, and other festivities colored the lobby of the College of Mass Communication as DZUP RC presented how the organization achieved such length in the airwaves and in the university. It caught the attention of the students and made them listen, watch, and read for a minute or two to know DZUP RC’s history.

3.            UPCurrents Launch

In partnership with the Diliman Interactive Learning Center, the organization launched a new smart phone app--an app that updates the entire UP community, and lets them share these updates as well. The UPCurrents app provides different kinds of useful information, from college updates, to the Alumni Updates, to RSS Feeds (news feeds from UP offices news, events, and updates), an events calendar, video channels (of UP feeds of colleges and offices), the UPinionator wherein the opinions of professors are viewed, social sharing, and of course, a livestreaming function for the University’s official radio stations, UP-FM 87.5 and DZUP 1602.

For this event, anyone who was interested simply dropped by the booth, downloaded the app, signed up for registration, and got the chance to win prizes. UP students discovered the new smartphone app that could make their lives easier and more accessible to the university’s information and updates.

4.            For The Record

Radio enthusiasts and fans of RX 93.1’s The Morning Rush were able to meet and greet its hosts Chico Garcia, Gino Quillamor, and Delamar Arias as they gave a talk on everything about radio, such as managing, hosting, and performing. They also gave out their tips and advice for anyone who wants to be in the industry and shared some personal stories about their journey as radio DJs.

5.            Diner Date

Faculty, students and staff celebrated RC’s anniversary with a grand pakain in the ol’ diner fashion. Burgers and rootbeer float were served at the College of Mass Communication FOI Garden.

RC also gave its appreciation to the college’s teachers in an advanced celebration of Teachers’ Day last October 5.

6.            Elevate 3.0

Over 300 students from all over the Philippines flocked to UP Diliman to attend the biggest student journalism workshop of 2014. A great set of mentors taught students who are interested in Editorial Writing, News Writing, Copyreading & Headlining, Photojournalism, Radio Scriptwriting and News Writing. Experienced speakers, such as Ms. Jing Castaneda, and Ms. Maeanne Los Banos, also talked about life in the real world of journalism and inspired the aspiring young journalists by telling them the power of the profession.

7.            Homeward Bound

DZUP RC’s Alumni graced the night of fun, games, and strolls down memory lanes. Held at Beehive Events Place in Maginhawa, members and alumni alike shared laughter and love. The organization gave thanks to the undying support from the alumni and to building a stronger connection between the members and the alumni.

One of the facets of radio as medium is its ability to bring music to everyone. DZUP Radio Circle (DZUP RC) recognized this characteristic and came up with an event that promotes music that is in accordance with the org's objectives, mission, and vision. In 2008, DZUP RC launched College Collision, an annual battle of the bands in the Metro that looks for aspiring and budding bands that want to reach their entry in the music industry. As the organization's flagship event, grand preparations and an astounding result have always been expected.

In its seventh year, College Collision aimed to boost OPM listenership and provide young musicians an avenue to master their craft. This year’s theme was Reac7ivate. On March 16, 2014, College Collision 7 rocked Cowboy Grill Delta to mount the hottest and biggest battle of the bands in the Metro.

This year, seven bands qualified for the Final Collision namely Fiya's Fate, Hiyas, Papa's Army, Moira, Sheenola, Veto, and Zeefra. These bands showed what they got and performed for the love of OPM.

As big as its 7th year, the popular OPM band Up Dharma Down graced the event and performed a set of their heartfelt songs. The grand champion of College Collision 6, Ashfire, returned to the stage to prove that they got the winning formula last year.

At the end of the collision, Veto stood out as the clear winner and was a living proof that OPM is alive and thriving in the Filipino music industry.

This academic year, expect nothing less as we assure you that DZUP RC is going to bring an event as successful and phenomenal as CC7.

In line with DZUP Radio Circle's (DZUP RC) mission to share supplementary radio skills to students from the college and the university, we found the need to move beyond radio and place ourselves outside the university to connect with high school students who practice and aspire student journalism.

The two-part Elevate: Student Journalism Workshop has aimed to equip high school students with additional journalistic knowledge. It has also promoted media literacy among budding student journalists. The workshops, which were held in July 2013 and January 2014, were attended by a total of almost 700 students from more than 30 schools in Metro Manila and Luzon.

The following were the categories of the workshops: news writing for print, editorial writing, feature writing, online journalism, photojournalism, copyreading, and radio newscasting & script-writing. 

Elevate (July 20, 2014)

As a part of DZUP RC's 8th year as an organization, we held our very first Elevate during the RC Week along with the other groundbreaking activities of the organization.

And to continue the promise of influencing and reaching to a wider audience of high school students, we held Elevate 2.0 with greater and bigger preparation. We made sure that these students would be more relevant and competent in their chosen field of media.

This year, Elevate is going to take things a notch higher in promoting and teaching responsible student journalism.

DZUP Radio Circle (DZUP RC) is one of the most diverse organizations in the College of Mass Communication. It has over 60 members from 10 different colleges and institutes within the university. Despite such diversity, the organization’s members are bound by their love for radio as a medium and by the desire to promote and practice responsible radio broadcasting.

DZUP RC, known for its work in the radio and UP community, relies on the strength of its members. Its members are the working force that propels the organization to be as relevant and competent through the changes in time, space, and environment.

In the past year, among the accomplishments of DZUP RC are the 23 new voices that were heard from different colleges such as Arts and Letters, Engineering, Home Economics, Mass Communication, and Tourism. Diversity is one of DZUP RC's eminent characteristics. 

These two successful application processes brought individuals that will be handling the future of the organization. The themes "More Than What You Hear" and "Be Radioactive" prove that DZUP RC is committed and dedicated in working for radio and moving beyond it.

With the academic year ahead, DZUP RC is ready for the new voices and faces that will be More Than What You Hear. 

Cowboy Grill - Delta turned the heat up and rocked an otherwise ordinary Sunday night with the most anticipated College Collision: Back to BaSIX! Extensive preparation brought about the sixth installment of this annual battle of the bands. Ten bands from different colleges and universities in the Metro finally collided last March 10.

  THE NEW ROCK AGE

"College Collision has always been an avenue for young artists to showcase their talents and most importantly, promote original Filipino music," says DZUP Radio Circle president, Eah Antonio.

The ten bands that made it to the finals this year are Altar of Eden, Ashfire, Seño, Ratfield, Daffadowndilly, Fiya’s Fate, Moira, Neverdie, Downdraft, and Crimsonstain.

Post-hardcore band Typecast also took part in the event with a special act, performing the songs "This Kind of Silence," "Boston Drama," and "Reverend's Daughter." College Collision 5 Grand Champion SoulPage returned to guest at the event with performances of "Ano Bang Gusto Mo," "Muli," and "Got Love".

More than just showcasing their talent, the finalists lit up the stage with their strong spirit, charisma, and energy. Six special awards were given that night in recognition of all these factors, given out with the help of the event’s three judges: Edric Oliveros, the Entertainment Manager of Cowboy Grill ; Robert Dela Cruz, drummer of Queso; and Francis "Brew" Reyes, former member of the rock band The Dawn and now music arranger for the Roadrunner Network.

Daffadowndilly and Fiya's Fate tied for the Cowboy Grill's Choice Award, winning gift certificates. The latter also received the Yakisobrang Shared Photo Award from Nissin Yakisoba, garnering over thirty thousand shares for their official band photo on College Collision's Facebook page. Cavite’s pride Seño bagged the award for Best Original Composition. Atenean rockers Downdraft won the People's Choice Award.

This year, the Best Power Chord Award and the title of Grand Champion went to Ashfire.

ASHFIRE: Setting the Local Music Scene Ablaze

Ashfire was formed on January 7, 2012. The name is a play on the creation of ashes from fire, explains guitarist Jerome Michael, a student from STI Shaw. The band also includes vocalist Donnie Ranido (STI Shaw), drummer Romz Vargas (STI Shaw), bassist Aldrin Encina (TIP), and guitarist Faye Yu (UP Diliman), whose presence fulfills the band's need for a female guitarist.

To quote Ashfire, having a female guitarist is "astig." Since its formation, the band has only been in two contests. Losing the first one did not stop them from joining College Collision 6, and it is as if destiny played a part in their victory.

The band cites Mr. Big, Guns N' Roses, Racer X, Bamboo, Juan Dela Cruz, and Paul Gilbert as major influences. The members' feelings and experiences (mostly about love) also play a huge part in determining their sound--a mix of glam rock and alternative rock.

“OPM is not dead,” Ashfire stresses. Many Filipinos continue to make music out there; likewise, many Filipinos continue to believe in and support OPM.

Aside from the Grand Champion title, Ashfire also won 20,000 Pesos in cash, trophy, certificate and radio guesting at DZUP 1602 AM Radio.

FRESH FACE, NEW PLACE

For the first time ever, Cowboy Grill played host to this year’s College Collision. Known for showcasing an impressive roster of new and young musicians, College Collision only got better this year with the venue’s huge stage, flashy lights and great acoustics coupled with the cozy ambiance and sumptuous food served by friendly staff. All these surely made the whole experience more intimate and perfect for bonding with friends while rocking out.

More than three hundred guests came to watch CC6 live. The heavy rain that began shortly after the first performance did nothing to keep music enthusiasts from witnessing young artists rock out on College Collision stage. DigRadio.PH also provided a live streaming of the event online. Adding to the excitement, raffle prizes by event sponsors also went up for grabs.

    SPREADING THE LOVE FOR OPM

College Collision is the flagship event of DZUP Radio Circle, a young student organization affiliated with DZUP 1602, the official AM radio station of the University of the Philippines Diliman. It is composed of students from different colleges in the University of the Philippines Diliman working together for a better community through radio as a medium. As a radio-centric organization, DZUP Radio Circle also believes in the power and talent of Filipino musicians. From promising freshmen to equipped seniors who are ready to take on the world, the members of the organization combine their unique skills and ideas to make College Collision happen every year.
