Biden isn’t Elizabeth Warren, who was my first choice. Or Kamala Harris or Cory Booker, who were my second and third choices. He isn’t Bernie, who was my first choice in 2016.

But he’s my choice now, and he is the candidate who stands between us and full-blown Fascism in America. So that’s a *profoundly* motivating circumstance, that gets me excited to work the phones, canvass, volunteer, donate, and do *everything* I can to get him elected.

And I get to be disappointed, and even pissed off that the woman I wanted for president, from the most diverse field of candidates in the party’s history, was passed over for Yet Another Old White Man. And he’s a TERRIBLE campaigner. That said, his policy positions are pretty good, and very likely the best we can realistically get right now, given the gerrymandering and minority rule the Republicans enjoy all over the country. Seriously, check them out if you haven’t. There are *real* and *meaningful* differences between Biden and Trump, and Biden’s policies are even more progressive than a lot of Obama’s. We’re not talking full-on Democratic Socialist revolution, but we’re holding the Overton Window steady, and slowly moving it back to the Left. 

Your feelings are ALWAYS valid, and it’s entirely reasonable to be mad that the person you wanted wasn’t the choice of the majority in the party. That’s totally okay. 

What’s not okay is anyone who identifies as a Progressive having a tantrum and passively or actively allowing Trump and his Fascist supporters to have another four years to finish their capture and destruction of our country, because Biden isn’t their first choice.

There’s a great analogy about general elections being like bus routes. You don’t wait in the pouring rain for the bus that takes you directly to your door, you get in the bus that’s going to get you as *close* to your door as possible, while immediately getting you out of the rain.

fascism would increase regardless of trump. it would have increased even if hillary won, and it would continue even if bernie won. the why is a little complex, but to summarize, fascism is what happens when a privileged economic class loses its privileges. trump doesn’t cause fascism, fascism causes trump. a politician like him was inevitable, because economic crisis breeds fascism, and capitalism always tends towards crisis. do you remember trump’s pathetic 2012 campaign? all it took was 4 more years of crisis for him to turn it around.

also, america’s default mode is fascism. you just didn’t realize it because you were able to ignore it until now. don’t believe me? i would suggest you google “jim crow”, “lynch mobs”, and “trail of tears”. literally not even scratching the surface with that.

2. There are *real* and *meaningful* differences between Biden and Trump, and Biden’s policies are even more progressive than a lot of Obama’s.

there are no differences actually. obama’s campaign was more progressive than bush’s and romney’s, and yet obama’s presidency was indistinquishable from bush’s, if not worse. he increased drone strikes, remained in afghanistan, destroyed libya and honduras, deported 2.5 million people and also put children in cages, he bombed a hospital, he violated the civil rights of journalists, imprisoned whistleblowers, and maintained a kill list. obama was an authoritarian. like, do i have to explain to you that campaign promises are never reliable? this is true for everyone, even bernie.

america’s problems are institutional. they are irrelevant to the president (this includes our current pandemic problem as well).

3. we’re holding the Overton Window steady, and slowly moving it back to the Left.

two things. first, assuming the “overton window” theory is valid, this isn’t even how it works:

According to Lehman, who coined the term, “The most common misconception is that lawmakers themselves are in the business of shifting the Overton window. That is absolutely false. Lawmakers are actually in the business of detecting where the window is, and then moving to be in accordance with it.”[7]

so voting is irrelevant to the overton window. second, if we ignore that you’re wrong, biden is a conservitive. he has a long history of racism, homophobia, sexism, and authoritarianism. he will not be better than trump. so if biden’s election has an effect on the “overton window”, then you’re actually shifting it to the right by electing him.

My issues with this post is:

1) Its performative. Why do white people need to hold their own baby and jack off at the idea of being an undocumented to understand how fucked up these things are? You had this moment, fine whatever, but I am a latine poc telling you that this is insensitive, performative, and unhelpful. You act like this is about us but its not-its about making yourself feel better.

2) Voting/the election as a whole, is not about deportation, ice, refugees, or keeping families together. Voting is as helpful to undocumented people as men wearing pink pussy hats is to maintaining abortion rights. Do some people think its nice? Sure! Is there anything wrong with dudes wearing pink pussy hats? Of course not! But is it true to say this aids people needing abortions in states where theyre unaccessible? Nooooooo. Similarly if a man made a long ass post about "what its like to be a woman" and ended it with "Thats why im begging you to buy an etsy pink pussy hat" many would be mad. Thats what this is.

3) Voting is incredibly inaccessible, and expecting people to vote when it endangers them or requires them to go without something (food, gas money etc) is cruel, especially when the candidates involved dont care about us and arent planning to help us in anyway. If you want people to vote, make sure we can AND that we actually get a seat at the table with our voices heard. Otherwise, it doesnt serve us.

Editing your post to remove "vote democrat" so you can replace it with "vote" while leaving all of the self serving jack off shit completely misses all of the points I was making.

The conversation is happening as opposed to not, but its too wide a stroke to imply this is a party wide platform when it fucking isnt.

And while we're here lets talk about voting-are you fighting for the registration process not to make your info public so abuse victims in hiding can vote without outting themselves to their abusers?*

Are you organising funds for people who have their hours slashed at work bc they voted (im referring to having a schedule accomodated for the ability to vote then being discreetly punished so legal recourse cant happen)?*

Are you organising funds for people who had to afford an extra day of daycare?

Are you organising ways to get people to voting locations, who either cant afford the drive, or lack a car etc?*

Are you fighting for indigenous peoples on reservations to get back their ability to vote? And for it to be done accessibly?
