dylan tossed and turned on her bed. the sweater around her was warm and she brought it up to her nose to inhale. it no longer smelled like lenox. she swiped it a few weeks ago, but didn’t have the heart to return it. especially since it was the only connection she had to the other agent. seeing her around tartarus was hard now. all she wanted to do was bury her face in her neck and squeeze her tight. but she couldn’t. she couldn’t risk it. so all she had now was the sweater that definitely no longer smelled like lenox and zero desire to fall asleep.
not bothering to slip into her slippers, dylan padded out of her room. no one was around, at least no one she could see. good. she made her way to lenox’s room on autopilot. she didn’t bother knocking, just opened the door quietly and quickly shut it behind her. her cheeks flushed immediately when her eyes dropped down to where lenox was doing push ups on the floor. the loose sweatpants sat low on her hips and she decided on a tiny sports bra that did wonders to show off her arms and back muscles. she pressed her back to the door and exhaled hotly unable to tear her eyes away.
“hey.” she said it softly, but she knew lenox could hear her. she quickly peeled the sweatshirt off her and held it in front of her like some sort of protection. she was glad she at least at the foresight to put a tank underneath it before heading over. “i...” she exhaled again and allowed her eyes to drift up. “i brought back your hoodie. it doesn’t smell like you anymore and i thought i should return it. i made sure no one saw me come here. i can leave it on the bed and just go.” she didn’t allow her eyes to drift back down -- it was too dangerous.
lenoxsong·:
The noises they’d let out during the kiss as well as the little whine from Dylan as she’d pulled her away, replayed in her head like a siren’s song. Tempting and so very dangerous. Maybe in another life or another universe she would have given in. And that version of me is a lucky bitch, she thought bitterly. The kiss had awakened some primal side of her that she hadn’t seen in years and it scared her to think of how badly she wanted to give into it and take exactly what she wanted.
Dylan was speaking now and every word she uttered clawed and pulled at her. Why did she have to be the responsible one? The one who had to say no? Oh right, because she was the ranking agent. One of only a few who’d been entrusted with secrets that the rest weren’t privy to.
Letting out another sigh, Lenox smiled sadly and dipped her head down. “Because this won’t end well. We both know the rules and what they’ll do if they even find out we kissed. ” Dylan deserved happiness. She deserved so much more than a life in Tartarus could give her, and it killed Lenox that she was trapped there. Her own freedom was something she’d long since stopped hoping for. Being an agent gave her purpose and direction. Their methods left nothing to be desired, but Lenox believed in their ultimate goal and mission. As much as she cared for Dylan, she couldn’t jeopardise that or risk Dylan’s safety by trying to have the best of both worlds.
As she spoke, Lenox struggled to look directly at Dylan, knowing one look at her darkened eyes and swollen lips would break her resolve and have her deciding to say “fuck it” before crashing her lips back against Dylan’s. As she came to a close, Lenox instead pulled Dylan back into a hug, ignoring the sting of tears in her eyes and willing them not to fall. Turning her head in, Lenox ever so gently kissed the other agent’s temple, her next words spoken directly against her skin. “I’m sorry, ae-in. We can’t. Nothing good can come of this.”
this won’t end well. the twist in her chest was sharp and dylan was worried for a second that something was physically wrong with her. she couldn’t remember the last time something hurt so much -- from words alone. it was a rejection -- something she was terrified of happening. and as much as she wanted to sink into herself and tell her how stupid she was for thinking that lenox might want her, she remembered the way her friend kissed her back. she could feel it right now. there was a delicate dance they were both participating in. dylan wanted to say fuck it and kiss lenox again, but it wouldn’t be right. now the way she was speaking. she knew the other agent was right. she knew they could never be, but still she stupidly hoped.
“yes, right. you’re right.” the twist in her chest hit hard again and she gasped unable to stop herself. the hug felt suffocating, but she closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around lenox tighter than before. she didn’t want to think that this would be the last time she touched her like this. she couldn’t think that. the kiss to her temple made her shiver and she let out a soft whimper. “i want to fight with you, but i think it’s better if you just let me go.” she swallowed down the lump in her throat, her eyes burning something fierce. “if you don’t, i’ll do something stupid and i want to respect you, so please.”
she struggled out of lenox’s comforting embrace. she couldn’t breath, the world closing in on her. her eyes tightly shut and she could remember the blade to her throat and the sharp pain as she bled out and got dizzy. with whatever strength she had, she grasped the edge of the pool and pulled herself out. she was soaking wet, but didn’t bother to stop and grab a towel or her discarded t-shirt. she kept her head down and scurried out of the pool. she needed to be alone.

songofzephyr·:
The moment Dylan’s lips met hers, the shaking stopped and so did everything else around her. Her hands instantly tightened their grip on Dylan’s waist and pulled her in so their bodies were flush. The kiss started out slow and sweet, but it awoke something in Lenox that she hadn’t felt in a long time. God she’d needed this, and she didn’t just mean the kiss. It was the fact that it was with Dylan specifically that made all the difference.
Moaning quietly into the kiss, Lenox couldn’t help be deepen it. Her powers were still keeping them afloat and she was able to continue doing so while pushing Dylan back against the wall of the pool. One of her hands moved up to cup Dylan’s cheek, her thumb running over her cheekbone in an effort to stop her hands from roaming elsewhere.
Another moan fell from her lips, this time louder and more guttural. Fuck, I really shouldn’t be doing this. Those words rang through her head and suddenly she was pulling away, her hands dropping back to her sides. “We…I can’t do this.” Realising how bad those words sounded, Lenox’s gaze shot up and she looked directly at Dylan, her head frantically shaking. “No, that’s not what I meant. I just can’t have this be a one time thing with you. I care about you too much for that.” Every word she was saying was true and yet somehow it still didn’t sound like it was enough to stop her from pulling Dylan to her and kissing her all over again.
the moan sent a shock through dylan’s body and for a second, she could imagine them outside of tartarus. she could picture a normal life from them both. one with endless kisses and wandering hands and no need to ever stop. maybe soft laughter rippling through a dark room. soft whispers of affection between giggles followed by breathy sighs and moans. no worries of mkhellfire. no worries of if they should or could. just the two of them wrapped up in their world figuring each other out. dylan wouldn’t shy away from her touch. and lenox would relax in her arms, soft and pliant and ready.
she was brought back from her thoughts when her back hit the solid wall of the pool and lenox’s hand on her cheek. it was her turn to sigh heatedly against her friend’s lips. the next moan caused a whine to leave her own lips. her fingers twisted in the top of lenox’s swimsuit -- steady and strong and unwilling to let go. then her mouth was gone followed by her hands and dylan suddenly felt alone. an ache bloomed in her chest when she heard the words. a whine left her lips again, but less needy and more desperate. her mind wasn’t functioning -- not with the taste of lenox still on her tongue.
with all her strength, she opened her eyes and stared at the other agent. her lips with swollen from the rough kisses and her cheeks dusted a tantalizing pink even though she had been freezing not a few minutes before. “i don’t want it to be a one time thing either.” her voice cracked and she hated how it betrayed her. “why does it have to be a one time thing?” a needy edgy in her tone made her drop her head and sigh. “sorry.” she mumbled it out before finally making eye contact again. “you can’t look at me like that if you don’t want me to kiss you again.” she set her jaw. her fingers were still tightly gripping lenox’s swimsuit. “you’re the only thing that makes sense in this whole place, nox.” her other hand reached up to cup her face, her thumb mimicking what the other agent had been doing as they kissed.

songofzephyr·:
Did she push too much? Really? That was an actual question? If Lenox weren’t so completely caught up in the moment she might’ve stepped away to look at Dylan straight in the eyes and raise her eyebrows. But she wasn’t in a place to be judging. Not when she’d accidentally been the one to manoeuvre herself into that very spot.
The soft caress of hot air against her ear had her trembling in Dylan’s arms, desperate for more. Lenox knew that if she asked Dylan to stop that the other woman would. But she didn’t want her to stop. She’d be lying if she claimed to have never noticed how attractive her friend was. Mix the physical attraction in with just how much she cared for her and Lenox was well and truly screwed.
Knowing she had to face the music, Lenox slowly pulled away from Dylan and stopped when they were finally face to face, arms still tightly wrapped around her. “I can’t…our friendship is too important to me to risk messing it up. I can’t ruin this for you or for me,” she eventually said, eyes brimming with emotion as she leaned in and rested their foreheads together.
dylan could feel the way lenox was trembling in her arms. she only held her tighter as she nuzzled her cheek against her soft skin. she wanted to soothe her, not ramp her up even more. her skin was on fire the more she stayed pressed against her friend. her heart hadn’t stopped clanging in her chest -- an all encompassing feeling that made her feel like she was high without ever taking a hit. she wanted to stay like this for as long as she could. she wanted to soak in lenox’s warmth and hold onto the joy and nervousness she was feeling. nothing had felt this good, not in years at least.
then lenox was pulling back and looking at dylan and all she wanted to do was kiss her. her entire body screamed at her to do it. her eyes heavy lidded flicked to her mouth then her eyes. she did this a few times until she could center herself and look mostly into her friend’s eyes. the steady feeling of her arms wrapped around her made the words feel less weighted. there was still hope. she sighed heavily when their foreheads came together. she brought a hand to cup her face, her thumb gliding over the apple of her cheek. she inhaled and tightened her hold on lenox.
“you aren’t the one messing up. i was the one that started it. you can’t ruin anything.” her voice trembled as she spoke. “you make me feel normal. you make me feel good.” her inflection and voice dipped. she pulled back and tilted lenox’s face up -- open and waiting for her. hesitating for a second, she ran her thumb over her bottom lip. she exhaled hotly. the moment was heated and she could ask -- she should ask. but she was afraid of the answer. the moment was now. her eyes searched lenox’s for a few seconds before she leaned forward and kissed her soft and searching.
songofzephyr·:
As Dylan’s arms found their way around her shoulders, Lenox finally relaxed into the hug. It had been so long since she’d hugged anyone and it was crazy how such a simple act could do so much for her mental wellbeing. Her grip around Dylan’s waist tightened and she let out a sigh she hadn’t even realised she’d been holding.
First came the soft nuzzle into her neck that had every inch of Lenox’s skin coming alive, causing shivers to pleasantly run down her back. But it was the gentle caress of lips against her bare neck that had Lenox’s knees growing weak and if she hadn’t already been using her powers to hold them up, the two of them probably would have sunk straight down into the middle of the pool. Though from the way her body was reacting to the affection, Lenox doubted that a swift dunking could interrupt what was happening between them.
A weak whimper left her lips and she trembled, scared to pull away and face Dylan, because she knew her eyes would betray her. Her body was begging her to just accept what was happening between them, and her heart throbbed painfully in her chest. She wanted this so badly. “Dylan…what…”
the whimper was enough to rock dylan, but she didn’t move away. usually, she would have stopped and taken a step back. but there was nowhere to go -- not with lenox’s arms snaked around her waist and her powers keeping them afloat. and more than that, dylan didn’t want to move away. she didn’t want this to stop. maybe it was selfish and wrong, but she could deal with that pit of self doubt tomorrow. because right now, for the first time in a long time, she felt wanted and needed and if that was all she would get, then she would greedily take it. the noise caused her to hum against lenox’s pulse. she stopped herself from opening her mouth and licking a stripe up her neck. she still could control. for now.
she could feel the other woman’s heart against her chest. the two of them battling for who could thump wilder. “did i push too much?” she ghosted her lips up the length of her neck and whispered the words into the shell of her ear. “i can stop.” but her hold on the other agent didn’t soften or give away. if anything, she felt desperate now for it not to stop. “tell me the word and i will. even if i don’t want to.” her cheeks burned with a mixture of embarrassment and desire. she was glad lenox couldn’t see it.
songofzephyr·:
It had been so long since she’d gotten to just have fun in Tartarus. Of course she had free hours where she could just do whatever, but chilling out and watching Netflix or working out in the gym weren’t her idea of fun. Getting to be silly and carefree. Laughing for the first time in what felt like months. That was fun. And getting to experience all of that with Dylan only made it that much better.
Of course she’d made a grave error when she’d decided to duck under and swim behind Dylan. In her mind maybe she’d do all that and then dunk Dylan in all the way underwater, get her body all at the same temperature so she could adjust to it quicker, but she hadn’t been anticipating that Dylan would lean back into her. It had been awhile since anyone had gotten this close to her and it showed. Lenox’s eyes fluttered shut and all she could do was hum when Dylan spoke.
Suddenly the warmth was gone and Lenox opened her eyes to protest, only to be greeted with Dylan’s impossibly blue eyes so close to her face. She swallowed thickly, completely entranced by the blonde and so ready to lean in and do something incredibly stupid. But Dylan was one of the few people she could rely on and there was no way she was going to risk that for a split second of weakness. Instead, Lenox discreetly used her powers to ensure they’d both be able to float without needing to tread water, and closed the distance, wrapping her arms around Dylan’s waist. She searched her eyes, silently asking for permission, before pulling the other agent into a hug. “Is this okay?”
the tension between them only seemed to ramp up. dylan’s eyes flitted from lenox’s eyes to her mouth. she knew it wasn’t subtle, especially not being this close. and for a split second, she thought her friend was going to kiss her. her skin practically crackled with energy at the thought alone. it was something she’d been thinking about since she got back from the mission -- lenox the only person who could relax her when she felt like she was cracking in a million different pieces. it was a stupid want... need. she could control herself. but if...
she was pulled out of her thoughts when she felt herself floating without having to tread water. lenox was making sure the two of them floated. her heart beat against her ribcage in an uneven staccato. she swore her consciousness was threatening to jump from her body she was so on edge. the arms around her body felt like flames licking up her skin. her teeth were no longer chattering. the look was met with a needy one in return. dylan found it impossible to find her voice.
being pulled into a hug made her relax. she became almost boneless in lenox’s arms. her head immediately finding her shoulder burying her face into her neck. she smelled like chlorine and that soap she favored. she smelled like her sheets, an all encompassing smell that immediately caused the tension in her shoulders to seep out. “more than okay,” she mumbled against her skin, her lips ghosting over her skin. she lightly brought her arms around lenox’s shoulders -- looping around her neck so she couldn’t move away yet. “thank you.” it came out softly as she nuzzled the skin underneath her lips. heart hammering so hard she knew lenox would be able to feel it, she threw caution to the wind. she pressed her lips firmly to the woman’s pulse point and allowed herself to get lost in the steady thrumming underneath her skin.
songofzephyr·:
Their conversation had been filled with casual flirting and plenty of innuendo, but somehow none of that prepared Lenox for the possible reality of Dylan stripping off her shirt, leaving her only in sports bra. Realising that she was staring, Lenox dipped below the water’s surface, fully submerging her body as both a distraction and a way to cool herself off. Only when she felt Dylan slip into the water did she bob back up again, grinning wildly as her friend joined her.
“Oh hush you big baby. Big bad government agent can’t take a little cold water? Dylan, is it me or are you getting soft in your old age,” she teased, playfully smacking the water in Dylan’s direction. Getting an idea, Lenox sank below the surface and out of view, kicking her legs gently so as to move through the water without giving her location away. Once she was in the right spot, she lazily let her body float to the top of the pool again, right behind Dylan. “Now we move around…maybe get you warmed up?”
as soon as she dipped into the water, lenox was gone underneath the surface. a heat bloomed in the center of her chest, but it wasn’t enough to stop her teeth from chattering. not with the two of them wet and treading water. dylan couldn’t help but return the smile, her cheeks almost hurting with how wide it became. she rolled her eyes playfully and splashed water at the other agent. all the tension she felt before walking into this room was slipping away quickly. things felt light now. besides the tension coiling between them. maybe it was just her head -- it couldn’t be trusted these days, but maybe it wasn’t.
“i am not a big baby!” she gasped in indignation. she kicked her legs as she narrowed her eyes in a joking manner. she then splashed water in her direction with a loud, unbecoming laugh. it echoed around the empty room, but she couldn’t find it in her to care. “i’m not getting soft! i’ll have you know i’m a badass.” her teeth chattered again, but before she could do anything, lenox sank beneath the surface again. she frantically looked around, but knew that her friend would be okay.
the heat that lessened when she dipped in the pool, now came back in full force when lenox popped up behind her. “nox.” the nickname slipped easily from her lips. a shudder went through her body at the feel of the woman behind her. with a small hum, she leaned back not sure exactly how close she was, but dylan was willing to risk it. she was the one who got behind her and so close. “how do you propose you do that? any ideas.” she looked over her shoulder with a smirk. with a renewed sense of purpose, she turned around finally realizing how close they were together. she raised an eyebrows with another smile.
songofzephyr·:
Rolling her eyes at the response she got, Lenox splashed Dylan once again. “When it comes to the removal of clothing, I always check first. Consent is very sexy, I’ll have you know,” she said, laughing all the way through her response.
“Or…maybe you should get in the pool,” Lenox shot back, making no attempt to move from where she was. The water was cool against her skin, but in a pleasant way that left her feeling refreshed and clear headed. Getting out marked a return to the real word that she just wasn’t ready for yet. “Either way, I’m right here. I’m always here for you.” Her wide grin dropped into a small but genuine smile that made her eyes twinkle with sincerity. It was a smile reserved for only a small handful of people in her life. A number that Dylan was now a part of.
dylan actually laughed at her reply finding lenox’s response endearing at the very least. her cheeks were still dusted with pink, but she didn’t fight it. “yeah, consent is the sexiest thing. but i had to check. you’re full of surprises.” she squeezed her hand once more which was followed with a small shrug.
tilting her head, she looked down at her friend, the flush building once again on the back of her neck. she cleared her throat and weighed her options. getting lenox out of the pool felt like an impossible task. “you think?” she disentangled their fingers as she pulled up the shirt she was wearing. underneath was a sports bra as she dropped the garment to the ground. her pants were already wet so she sighed. “fuck it.” and with that and the other agent’s smile, she slipped into the pool gasping at the cool water encompassing her body. she treaded the water before finally turning to look at lenox. “now what? and it’s fucking cold.” her teeth chatters as she kept moving her body in an attempt to get warm.

songofzephyr·:
Lenox was grateful for the dim lighting in the room and the fact that when she blushed it didn’t stand out that much against her natural skin tone. It allowed her to get away with reacting to the incendiary words coming from Dylan, which were clearly not meant in any serious way if her reaction was anything to go by. “If I wanted to get you wet, I wouldn’t have to ask.” Using her free hand, she swiped at the water, causing a mini wave that drenched Dylan’s lower legs and knees. A smug look crossed her face and she didn’t need to say it for anyone looking to know that her expression just screamed “told you”.
The hand placed on hers made Lenox smile even wider and before she could second guess herself, she intertwined their fingers, needing the comfort that the contact brought her. “I know and I never would. You’re easy to talk to.”
the words pulled at dylan’s gut. she felt suddenly like she couldn’t breathe again. it wasn’t the tightness in her chest from earlier. no, this was something new and feral. the back of her neck was on fire, but before she could sink into the feeling and stutter out some sort of reply, lenox was splashing her with a ridiculous amount of water. swallowing down a million different responses, she smirked. “if you wanted to get me out of my pants, you could also just ask. or is that something you don’t ask about either.” she lifted an eyebrow proud of the way that her voice didn’t waver.
their fingers now tangled together made her realize how loud her heart was pounding against her ribcage. she cleared her throat, but stopped. nothing would make her feel better in this moment. she squeezed lenox’s hand and tugged at her. “can you get out of the pool? you’re kinda far away.” she licked her lips and looked away. “i’m glad. that i’m easy to talk to. i feel the same way about you.” she offered a sweet smile before squeezing her hand again.
songofzephyr·:
“Hey, stop it. You could never ruin my afternoon, morning or evening. Don’t make me pull you down in here with me, cause you know I will.” It was an empty threat but Lenox raised her eyebrows and waggled them at Dylan all the same, happy to get a chance to joke around and be carefree for even just a little while.
Keeping her hand next to Dylan’s knee, she swivelled to the side so her back was flush with the wall of the pool, her forearms now fully resting on the wall. “Trying not to think about anything, actually. It gets intense out there sometimes and right now it feels like a dry California summer. One spark and everything will just…” she snapped her fingers, and sighed, head dropping ever so slightly before slowly turning to Dylan. “You’re a smooth talker… but you know, I like that you’re honest. Don’t ever think you have to censor yourself around me.”
a sense of relief flooded her system at the words. she wasn’t unwanted. for a second, dylan could forget the pain of dying -- the way she screamed as flesh met sword. she cleared her throat and focused on lenox in front of her. “don’t be so sweet or you might make a girl crazy.” she kept her tone low and teasing. “if you wanted to get me wet, all you have to do is ask.” the words slipped out and her face burned with the implication. it was supposed to come out as a joke, but instead she felt the weight of them settle on her shoulders. she was sure her entire face was red. she cleared her throat. “sorry. i didn’t... i meant swimming. obviously.”
once lenox turned away from her, she allowed herself to study her. the hand next to her knee stayed attached to her skin. “i can’t blame you. the agents are getting restless and all it’ll take is someone looking the wrong way.” she lifted her eyes to look at her friend. the blush that settled on her face seemed to now be a permanent feature. “i’m not. i’m not a smooth talker. it’s not a line.” she hated the way she sounded desperate. it was hard to explain how the other woman’s presence put her at ease. “you don’t have to either. censor yourself. i can handle anything.” her fingers uncurled from the fist she’d been making and laid on top of lenox’s hand holding it in place.
If I had any advice for my 16-year-old self, it would just be to stay strong, because acting is not an easy lifestyle, especially when you are starting out. That being said, it definitely makes it all worth it when it does happen.
songofzephyr·:
Organisations like MKHellfire weren’t made for making friends, but camaraderie seemed to happen naturally between agents that got along. Lenox herself could understood why they saw such a bond as weakness but surely agents that worked better together was a thing worth encouraging, as long as they kept their ultimate loyalty to the cause. She wasn’t out there looking for friends, but if a connection formed, Lenox wasn’t about to fight it. And there was definitely something there with Dylan. “Well I’m glad you came to find me.”
She could see the smile not quite meeting Dylan’s eyes and frowned. None of them were really okay but the blonde’s latest mission had taken more out of her than usual. “A little at first and then I started to think about things and I stopped. Decided to stop and work on some control techniques instead before I did some damage to myself,” As Dylan’s hand moved some hair on her face, Lenox felt herself lean into the touch ever so slightly before catching herself. Shifting ever so slightly, both to distract herself from what had just happened and to get more comfortable, Lenox felt her hand bump into the side of Dylan’s knee but made no attempt to move it. “Is there anywhere that doesn’t make you feel that way?”
“thanks or else i’d have to leave you alone in the pool.” she tried another smile, her tone teasing and light as she could manage. lenox was the only person who wasn’t on the mission that she trusted. it seemed strange so far below the denver airport without any means of escape, but she did. something about her made it easy for dylan to try and undo the tight ball in her chest. “i didn’t know where else to go or who to see. you usually make the most sense. i hope i didn’t wreck your afternoon. say the word and i’ll get out of your hair.”
the frown didn’t go unnoticed. she wanted to reach out and touch the corner of her mouth, but instead curled her fingers into her palm. better not to push. “what were you thinking about? and it looks like you were killing it with the concentration stuff. it was a perfect bubble. me wandering in didn’t even pop it.” she noticed the lean in and then pulling back. her fingers itched to do it again until lenox stopped catching herself. she cleared her throat and looked up at the ceiling. her cheeks now a harsher pink than before. at the feeling of lenox’s hand against her knee, she snapped back to reality. she gently pushed her leg into lenox’s touch. “yeah, any place that’s got you.” it came out quicker than she had intended and she sighed. “sorry, i don’t mean to be so intense. but it’s true.”
songofzephyr·:
With the only entrance and exit to Tartarus now out of commission, it didn’t take long for the cabin fever to set in for the other agents. But for Lenox, the lack of a physical escape route meant little to her. She’d long since accepted the life sentence that was being part of MKHellfire. They weren’t allowed to physically leave the facility without permission anyway. The only difference now was that permission couldn’t be given, even if the execs wanted to give it.
But the panic and restlessness of the other agents was starting to take it’s toll on her patience, which was why she found herself looking for quiet spaces around Tartarus. One such place was in the pool. Pools themselves had always provided a safe haven for Lenox, but the Tartarus pool was well maintained and underused, the best combination for a water loving agent who needed her quiet time.
Lenox swam lengths for what felt like hours, before breaking out into some of the training techniques she’d been trying recently, one of which was swiftly becoming her favourite. Settling into an area of the pool, with a little concentration, Lenox was able to slowly create a pocket of air that completely surrounded her and allowed her to remain in the centre of the pool for as long as she was able to keep up her concentration.
She felt more than heard Dylan enter the room, registering the disturbances in the air and water around her. Peeking through one open eye, she smiled and allowed the bubble to pop so she could swim towards the other woman. With her hands braced on the edge of the pool either side of Dylan, Lenox looked up at one of the few people in Tartarus that she tentatively called her friend. “Hey…What’s up?”
the smile was enough to put dylan at ease. the tightness in her chest loosened a little more. it was enough to help her breathe. then lenox was impossibly close, practically between her legs. she stopped kicking them and shrugged, her cheeks tinged pink -- hopefully not noticeable in the dim lighting. “i just wanted to see you.” she cleared her throat and finally looked to meet her friend’s eyes. it was easier to talk to her -- someone who hadn’t seen what happened or looked at dylan like she was someone else.
she did her best to mimic the smile and wondered if she was pulling it off. “my room felt like it was suffocating me. it doesn’t feel the same.” she didn’t need to finish it with since i felt myself die twice or since the mission. it went without saying. “you enjoying your swim?” she brought up a hand to push back the hair stuck to lenox’s forehead.

the mission left dylan off center. nothing was right since rescuing eva and ensuring the safety of the others, especially eevee. her neck still burned from where the detonator had been placed. she spent nights in her room wondering if it might have been better if it triggered in the abandoned mine. nightmares plagued her, the dark circles under her eyes proof enough. she was mostly happy to be alive. the mission had been a success. she tried not to think about what it felt like to die. she felt it twice in less than an hour. her skin itched with it. she could feel the knife in her throat and the sword slicing through her flesh. the way it sizzled and charred -- the sickly sweet smell that lingered in her nostrils.
it was why she was grateful to have run into lenox not long after returning home. lenox who understood ptsd even if she skirted around saying those words. lenox who was soft and hard all at the same time. who understood without dylan having to explain because sometimes words didn’t give the experience any justice. she allowed dylan to just fucking breathe. the weight of it all didn’t feel like it was suffocating her. visiting eva and celeste left a bitter taste her mouth. it was hard to even face jac -- the missing eye a reminder that she could have done better, she should have done better.
being trapped inside tartarus made her wish for death once again. the idea of not being able to get out made her skin crawl. she spent a few hours in the gym doing her best to work off the access energy -- enough so maybe she could actually sleep without dreams. freshly showered and with her hair in a messy bun, she made her way to the pool. lenox would most likely be there. it was quiet and for that dylan was thankful. she didn’t want to deal with anyone else. pushing open the door, the harsh smell of chlorine hit her hard. her face didn’t move as she let the door slam behind her.
her eyes quickly went around the pool area. she took in everything as quickly as she could, still afraid something might be lurking in the shadows. but it was empty, save the huge bubble in the center of the pool. lenox was housed inside and the knot in dylan’s chest loosened slightly. carefully, she toed out of her shoes and rolled up her sweatpants before sitting down on the edge of the pool and sinking her feet into the water. “hey.” she cleared her throat as she kicked her legs idly. “you wanna float over here?”
