âMy girl is holy, is sacred, is pure, is clean, is loved, is whole, is beautiful, is worthy, is okay, is alone, is just fine just the way you are girl just the way you look babe with that dirty mouth and those hands, wherever they have been and that sadness, whatever caused it and that anger, wherever it came from and that fear, who ever brought it you are my girl, girl, you are me.â - Warsan Shire. The peace-movement kids, the womenâs movement, the civil-rights fighters, all of the outsiders and outcasts - everything we read told us that San Francisco is where we, the âus-esâ, could find safe harbor. So thatâs where we went, on our own journeys to find freedom and shelter, all of the âus-esâ.
One thing I always bring up that straight writers obviously donât understand but every gay person ever can attest to is that queer people stick together. Like, every queer person knows like 15 other ones and those 15 know even more.Â
Like, having only One in your story completely misses the point of how we organize and stay safe, in addition to completely missing the point on being progressive (ie, having A Single Gay in your story isnât special anymore and hasnât been for decades now)
It is a fundamental misunderstanding of how marginalized people act bc straight people are allowed to be solitary and they donât understand any other way of Being
Hijacking this post to talk about something interesting! Thereâs a lot of criticism in fanfiction circles of yaoi or yuri fanfiction where âeverybody is gayâ, and itâs almost always by folks who havenât been involved in queer communities. If youâre queer, you really do surround yourself with queer people - so âeverybody is gayâ in a characterâs social circle actually makes perfect sense!Â
this exhibits itself in other ways too, for example, when thereâs one queer sibling thereâs usually more - often because one sibling will bring the definitions home and the other will use that to explore their own identity!Â
Another weird phenomenon I noticed is this happens a lot even before people realize theyâre Not Straight â˘. Out of my close friends in high school, most of us turned out some form of LGBTQA, and Iâve heard other people say the same is true for them. So people saying itâs âunrealisticâ that everyone in the same social circle would gradually discover theyâre Not Straight â˘- yeah, it is totally reasonable and even likely.
I notice throughout my life, not all but most of my closest friends growing up are have now come out as lgbtq folks. A number of my closest circles then and now are composed of a variety of folks on that spectrum in some way or another. Tbh only a small fraction of my close friends are straight cis folks.

happy birthday asshole thanks for the french encyclopedia that you call a novel
When I was 21 I read âAnna Karenina.â I thought Anna and Vronsky were soul mates. They were deeply in love and therefore had to be together. I found Karenin cruel and oppressive for keeping his wife from her destiny. Levin and Kitty and the peasants bored me. I read those parts quickly. Last year I turned 49, and I read the book again. This time, I loved Levin and Kitty. I loved the fact that after she declined his proposal he waited for a long time to mend his hurt feelings and then asked her again. I loved that she had grown up in the interim and now felt grateful for a second chance. Anna and Vronsky bored me. I thought Anna was selfish and shrill. My heart went out to poor Karenin, who tried to be decent. What has literature taught me about love? Literature (along with experience) has taught me that love means different things at different points in our lives, and that often as we get older we gravitate toward the quieter, kinder plotlines, and find them to be richer than we had originally understood them to be.
