— as he got older, his attachment to dusty only grew. some would call it codependent and maybe, it was. that being said ( with the exception of sunny ), there was no one else that made jackie feel completely safe. he adored their family, of course, but it didn’t feel the same. there was a strange feeling of ... never being able to repay dusty. for the way he’s always protected him. — moving apart from everyone was ... a struggle, at first. and it showed, though he did his best to hide it. colorado is where jackie discovered the drag scene and fully threw himself into it. that’s where he felt safe, as he learned to navigate the world, feeling alone for the first time. — jackie has always been particularly naive and maybe a little too trusting. a little too willing to love. the kind of person to have a million love languages, the kind of person willing to sacrifice anything in order to make another happy. he was willing to give, and there was always someone willing to take. — when he met colt ( and he should’ve ran away the second he learned his name because, what good can a man name colt bring ? ), jackie’s pretty sure he had hearts in his eyes. everything about him seemed perfect, but that’s always how it goes, and things don’t stay perfect forever. it wasn’t long before the novelty wore off and whatever warmth jackie felt for the man was replaced with fear. — jackie had been too scared to tell his siblings about what was going on and for the first time in his life, was thankful that they weren’t there to see the bruises on his arms. he wasn’t sure if they could hear it in his voice every time they spoke, but he’s got a feeling dusty could. that they knew something was going on. — getting away from colt and leaving him for good was one of the more difficult things jackie experienced. coping was ... strange. strange, because he couldn’t figure out why a part of him missed the man. that part of him soon fizzled out and died away, replaced by the anger he felt towards him.

He exhaled deeply as a cold breeze passed through him, allowing it to take away the unsettling thoughts circling his head; at a slow pace he walked the night in an attempt to keen on the bright decorations that now seemed to cover the entire town, but it didn’t impress him at all. It was that time of the year again and while the man couldn’t be bothered to care, there were alway great events on and about Salem, and for him it did not have anything to do with the Winter Wonderland. “Nothing is too wondrous that can’t be explained.” he rambled distracted as he tried to make amends with his own endurance. He looked up only to find someone staring at him and abruptly stopped before bumping into them. “Holy—” he gasped, ”You scared me.” but smiled while catching his breath.

he’d never been one to consider the holidays particularly magical or what have you, but — he’s always been one of appreciate them. and the type to try and get shopping for others out of the way as soon as possible. does he succeed ? hardly ever, and this day on its own proves just that ; he’d gotten distracted and chose instead, to wander around. good for the soul, right ? going out and about ? he’s still not familiar with every little thing around town and that’s his own fault, not wanting to be a bother to his brothers by asking them to constantly show him around ; plus, what if he found something for one of them and had to pretend he was buying it for himself ? embarrassing. not that he’s done much besides people watch lately, resulting in him accidentally looking ( translation : staring ) at people a little too long, and — “ sorry, ” the smile he offers is nothing short of kind, as jackie rocks back on his heels, hands stuffed in his pockets. out of what can only be described as mild curiosity, jackie tilts his head, “ i didn’t mean to, uh — stare or anythin’. you alright then ? did i get in your way or anythin’ ? ”

he’s got absolutely NOTHING to do today, and he’s a little more than grateful for it. his days and nights are usually packed full but on the rare occasion that this happens he takes the time to just sort of soak in the day. but as it turns out, he’s really more than a little tired at this point, he thinks all the sleepless nights and busy days are just now starting to creep up on him. he’s not doing much, just sitting, has earplugs in, music blaring through them so when he realises that someone is talking to him, he’s a little more than startled. “sorry, what did you say?”

“ i was makin’ sure you weren’t dead, ” jackie’s foot nudges the other’s gently, a playful smile at his lips. he gets it, no, really — there’s plenty of times he’s finished a shift at the diner and gone straight to a show, out and about until three or four in the morning. it starts catching up to you, burning the candle at both ends and whatnot. you always spend the next day feeling like a damn zombie, and he’s startin’ to wonder if it’s worth it. “ you wanna get some coffee or somethin’ ? might even get’cha somethin’ to eat, too — i’m feelin’ generous today. ”

[ the night of the fireworks, october 31. ]

It was like celebrating fourth of July, lights abound and flickering across the sky with exciting pops and crackles — overstimulating at excess, perhaps, but Dustin thought that anything remotely resembling exploding stars was worthy of the squabbling nervousness that one might feel. He had taken it upon himself, in his Han Solo costume ( because who else would he dress up as, if not someone from his favorite trilogy in science-fiction? ) to purchase a box of sparklers from the vendor that was carting around and hyping up the individuals that were looking to have some mini-fireworks of their own. He was having a good time with them — really, he was, but honestly, the whole box of them was too much for one person, and with a lit sparkler in one hand, he had been looking around for someone to offer the extras to. It just so happened that he was standing toward the entrance of the seating area, intending to keep out of everyone’s way, and when he saw someone lurking around the corner and calling out to them. “Hey! Hey, you got a minute?” Extending the arm holding the sparkler and waving it around, he shook the box in his other hand. “You want some of these? I have way too many on my hands.”

under normal circumstances, this would be jackson’s absolute —. loud, bright, too many people — crowding around, talking over each other, bumping shoulders. you get it. he could feel the headache starting to bloom at the base of his skull and chose to ignore it for the time being because he’ll be damned if his night was gonna be ruined. not because of a headache, that’s for damn sure. that doesn’t mean he can’t take a break though, right ? right. because if he doesn’t sit down for ten seconds, he’s gonna become everyone’s problem, and there’s not a single person on the planet who wants to deal with that nonsense. not tonight, y’know ? eyes downcast, one hand moving to rub his face before it pauses, and he sighs, and his arm drops back to his side. bad day to wear make - up, halloween be damned. his eyes hurt. “ no, ‘cause i’m not s’posed to talk to strangers, ” he says, far too cheery for the mood he was in ten seconds ago. jackie rocks back on his heels, reaching for the box, only for his eyes to narrow. “ is this a trick question ? last i checked, you wouldn’t trust me with this kinda shit. ” you leave a candle lit one time and forget about it, and suddenly your whole family — and everyone else around you — thinks you shouldn’t be trusted with fire. like, okay, maybe ! sure ! probably ! jackie’s still gonna complain about it, though. “ what’cha been doin’ all night ? ”

See, he’s not very good at this — dating thing. Thinks there’s headlights in his eyes when Jackie says saccharine words not meant for people like him ( a creature of the night, with or without wretched divinity ), when his lips press against his knuckles the way that his fingers used to softly trace over puffed, scarred-up wrists. Cyrek rarely dated, even casually, so he couldn’t begin to describe what possessed him that evening to say yes, or to ask that — dating meant streaks of crimson running down the motel bathroom mirror, a ruby-red glistening from his nose that he’d forever recall. It was a red flag for infidelity to walk in, for the person lying beside him to wake up one day and decide that he just wasn’t good enough anymore, too little to give and too much to handle. In fact, standing there now, almond-shaped eyes staring at him in something of an awestricken daze, he’s not really sure if Jackie can feel the tremor in his tattooed fingers when his lips brush the olive flesh, absence of fear in his gaze and mere anxiety brimming the surface and rasping out quietly, “Tell me what you want it to be.” Are we fucking around? Are we — Do you — The words mangled around, dizzied up in his brain when those larger hands grasp on his waist and draw him into an embrace, typically sullen demeanor squandered with quickening breaths, anticipation, electricity — all things that never lacked in capacity when he’d re-explored who Jackie was to him and the memories flooded in. Thin digits coiled into the fabric of his shirt, eyes fluttering closed ephemerally to relish the fleeting press against his lips. His hands tugged, maybe he’s greedy to taste it again, lenses hooded and haughtily challenging, “Is that any way to greet someone?” Peering through the mess of black-blonde curls foresting his vision, the taller counterpart perked a brow, slithering a hand up to cup the nape of his neck and thumb the back of his long hair. “It’s… vegan gyros. Jackfruit and whatever the fuck else you want on it… tomatoes or — onions, whatever. I’m just waitin’ on the tzatziki for the sauce with the pita. Uh… coconut milk, cashews, apple cider vinegar. They’ll be, yknow — hot, though. Sound good?”

if he was fond of the act, jackie would lie — he’d lie and say everything he did came to him naturally. that it was easy and didn’t wrack his nerves. he’d lie and say that when he reached for cyrek, it wasn’t with a slight tremor in his fingers, the slightest shake that could go unnoticed if he wasn’t so aware of himself when in vicinity of the other. he isn’t fond of lying, however, and the thought of doing so leaves a bitter taste in his mouth ; so, he won’t lie. it doesn’t come naturally, it completely destroys him ( and god, not once in his life has he ever welcomed an act of destruction with open arms until now ), and his hands do shake when he reaches for cyrek and every time they touch, it almost burns, and he craves it. the nerves, the burn on his skin, the electricity that shoots through him every time he meets the punk’s eyes and thinks, i’m here, and so are you, and that’s enough ; you’re more than enough. “ we don’t have to say it’s anything, baby, ” but his grip on cyrek tightens, to keep him close, as if he’s afraid the other could disappear at any moment. “ but, y’know, i’m gonna say it’s a date. gonna tell everyone about it, too. ” he’s constantly waging war with himself ; he wants the nerves to dissipate so he can allow himself to relax fully and melt into the other, let the rest of the world fall away until it’s just them, if only for a moment. then the part of him, the part that he’s clung to for so long, is in disagreement — because the nerves don’t need to go away. nothing negative has come from them, nothing more than an air of excitement and a rush of adrenaline that always leaves him wanting more. more of what, he isn’t sure, and maybe it’s just more of what cyrek is willing to give. “ was gonna greet you by just saying you do look very sexy in your pjs, but ... well, guess i kinda did. and it’s very true. ” when jackie moves away from him, he doesn’t go far — as if his own body wouldn’t permit it, his hand searching for cyrek’s once more until he can intertwine their fingers, tugging him in the direction of the kitchen. “ yeah, it sounds good. come here, ” six steps. it’s maybe all of six steps further into the home before jackie’s free hand comes to rest on cyrek’s cheek, thumb brushing lightly against skin. jackie takes a moment to look at him ( admire him, maybe, is more like it ) and he has to stop himself from staring the best way he knows how ; with another kiss, more than peck and still, not nearly enough.

To say that he was anticipating the knock on the door would be an understatement — there was a dotting line of anxiety that thrummed lightly beneath the surface, nothing appallingly bad ( like hiding under the counter at the bar and stifling breathlessness that swept his lungs with a putrid burning sensation and had him tasting ash on his tongue again ). Actually, it tasted like spring, rejuvenating something in his being and repossessing a zeal that had abated into a dormant state since the status of his life changed rapidly from single to single father. He took one last look over the saucepan simmering on the stove before he padded toward the door and opened it, natural curls of black-and-blonde variation squashed down by the beanie he was wearing and Playboy hoodie hanging loosely over his torso, and barren heterochromatic eyes swiveled immediately to meet the other’s dark gaze, full tiers quirking upward. They filtered out the firebrand’s wonted sullenness, and he stepped back, the edges of almond-shaped eyes wrinkling with a slight of temptation, beckoning the pink-haired in with crooked finger to the Nirvana-themed den of his home, shutting the door behind him. “Minha casa é sua casa,” Cyrek greeted, giving the radiator located directly aside the door a nice, swift kick in the ass and listening to the raggedy purr, rocking on his heels in his moccasins when he turned to the other and looked down, reaching for Jackie’s hand, recalling their conversation earlier and tilting his head. “Is this a date, too?” Brazenly, his eyes snapped back up, tugging him closer invitingly and licking his lips, snickering and simpering lowly, “Y’know, if you can stand the sight of my arse in my pyjamas.”

he had imagined a million and one different scenarios in the past, all revolving around cyrek ; what would happen if they saw each other again, met for the first time in years. would it have been easier to pass each other by, head down ? confront the situation head on and demand some kind of answer to questions he’s had for god knows how long ? some scenarios ended better than others, where issues were resolved and they could learn to call each other friends ; because jackie had been scared to admit he was still holding onto the shred of hope that running into each other again would have the desired outcome he’d secretly wished for. what’s funny, y’know, is that they always tell you to be careful what you wish for — and fuck that, because if jackie had been careful, he never would’ve wished at all. and he’s foolish enough to think a lack of wishing wouldn’t have brought him here. looking at the other ( with, of course, a quick once - over ) knowing there’s nothing but pure adoration in his eyes. maybe a little bit of something else too, but there’s no need to get into all that now. “ aren’t you sweet ? ” his eyes follow cyrek’s movements, lips twitching into a soft smile. fondness, nothing less. “ it could be, ” his hand squeezes the other’s as he takes a step closer, bringing cyrek’s hand to his lips to press a chaste kiss to his knuckles. there’s ever - present nerves when around cyrek and with each passing moment, jackie has come to realizes he likes those nerves. they’re welcomed, and a part of him — no matter how small — hopes those butterflies never go away. they don’t have to flutter and flip until he’s dizzy, but they can float around and remind him that they aren’t going anywhere. “ i think we both know i like looking at your ass. doesn’t matter what you’re wearing, ” his hand releases cyrek’s, both of his own resting upon the punk’s waist — and with jackie daring to catch him in a quick kiss. “ so, tell me more about dinner. i mean, y’know, that is what i came here for. well ... part of what i came here for. ”
