BACKGROUND.
— jackie has always been particularly sheltered for most of his life, thanks to his siblings. it’s never been something he disliked, nearly attached at the hip. dusty is, in short, jackie’s best friend. and always will be. growing up looked promising, like it would be normal, and jackie was sure he couldn’t ask for anything else. — and he quickly learned that maybe he shouldn’t ask for anything at all. eight years old, and he and his siblings experienced what no child ever should. — the loss of one’s parents will forever be burned into your memory. that entire night will forever be burned into jackie’s. there’s plenty of reminders, plenty of scars and memories. he plays it over and over again in his head sometimes : the intruders, the sound of their parents. sunny’s injury, dusty’s attempts to protect him. more than attempts. he did protect him. he did everything he could.
— things after that night sort of felt like a blur. as if jackie wasn’t experiencing life through his own eyes, but someone else’s. if you asked him about his childhood, he’s not sure he could tell you much. most memories are of high school, and hardly any of them are good. maybe he’s just blocked too much out. blocked out the good things to make room for the shit that leaves a hole in his chest when he thinks about it.
— as he got older, his attachment to dusty only grew. some would call it codependent and maybe, it was. that being said ( with the exception of sunny ), there was no one else that made jackie feel completely safe. he adored their family, of course, but it didn’t feel the same. there was a strange feeling of ... never being able to repay dusty. for the way he’s always protected him. — moving apart from everyone was ... a struggle, at first. and it showed, though he did his best to hide it. colorado is where jackie discovered the drag scene and fully threw himself into it. that’s where he felt safe, as he learned to navigate the world, feeling alone for the first time. — jackie has always been particularly naive and maybe a little too trusting. a little too willing to love. the kind of person to have a million love languages, the kind of person willing to sacrifice anything in order to make another happy. he was willing to give, and there was always someone willing to take. — when he met colt ( and he should’ve ran away the second he learned his name because, what good can a man name colt bring ? ), jackie’s pretty sure he had hearts in his eyes. everything about him seemed perfect, but that’s always how it goes, and things don’t stay perfect forever. it wasn’t long before the novelty wore off and whatever warmth jackie felt for the man was replaced with fear. — jackie had been too scared to tell his siblings about what was going on and for the first time in his life, was thankful that they weren’t there to see the bruises on his arms. he wasn’t sure if they could hear it in his voice every time they spoke, but he’s got a feeling dusty could. that they knew something was going on. — getting away from colt and leaving him for good was one of the more difficult things jackie experienced. coping was ... strange. strange, because he couldn’t figure out why a part of him missed the man. that part of him soon fizzled out and died away, replaced by the anger he felt towards him.
— jackie likes to say he isn’t scared of much. he’s lying, of course, but he likes to humor himself every now and again. his biggest fear is losing the people he’s closest to ; he’s already lost so many, he’s not sure how much more he can take. he prefers to keep those worries to himself, though. — it took no convincing at all to get jackie to move. there’s nothing he wants more than to be close to his family again. he wouldn’t be helping out at the diner if he didn’t love them so damn much. plus, he’s always been a people person.
— it’s taken some time, but jackie has rekindled his love of drag and is making his attempt to get back into it. after his relationship, he found himself with a sour taste in his mouth at the thought of trying it again. this time around, however, he’s met his drag mother to help guide him through it all. and they’ve given jackie the chance to open up and love what he does, and who he is again.
TIDBITS.
— jackie is hard of hearing in his left ear. — he’s also the definition of an ‘ annoying sibling ’, refusing to let his brothers have a moment of peace and quiet. — he accidentally ate glass once. no, he doesn’t wanna talk about it. it was an accident. he didn’t know it was there. — no, jackie is not always the brightest, but he is doing his best. he’s a complete sweetheart who wants nothing but the best for everyone around him. — if you wanna ignore the fact that he’s not quite the brightest but definitely means well, he’s just started the process of furthering his education to become a kindergarten teacher. yes, he’s stressed and panicking about it. but it’s fine.
