— BIOGRAPHY
mateo ramirez was five years old when his parents immigrated from chile to new york, settling in queens with little more than determination and the hope of something better. english came slowly at first, and the accent he carried made him an easy target for bullies. still, mateo learned early how to endure, how to keep his head down and push forward. his parents worked long hours in service jobs, and while money was often tight, the home was full of warmth. when his younger sister was born, the family finally felt rooted, bound together by shared sacrifice and a fierce sense of loyalty that never faded.
growing up, mateo was drawn to structure and fairness, to the idea that rules could protect rather than punish. he worked hard in school despite distractions and doubt, determined not to waste the opportunities his parents had crossed borders to give him. law enforcement wasn’t a passing interest, it was a calling. after graduating high school, he enrolled at john jay college of criminal justice, balancing classes with part-time work before entering the nypd academy. from the beginning, he carried himself with seriousness beyond his years, earning respect through consistency rather than charm.
his career progressed steadily: patrol officer, detective, precinct commander. mateo wasn’t flashy, but he was reliable, the kind of officer others trusted in high-pressure situations. years of commendations and difficult cases eventually led to his promotion to deputy chief of police, a role that demanded both political restraint and moral clarity. he became known for mentoring younger officers and insisting on accountability, shaped by his belief that policing should serve communities, not intimidate them.
he met his wife during a domestic call early in his career, a brief, unlikely encounter that lingered longer than either expected. they married quickly, learning soon after that she was pregnant with their first son. life moved fast but happily: two boys, a modest home, and a future that felt solid. that certainty shattered when mateo was forty. his wife was killed in a drive-by shooting, wrong place, wrong time, senseless violence. the loss hollowed him out, but it also hardened his resolve. from that moment on, ending gang violence became more than a professional priority; it was deeply personal.
almost ten years later, mateo still carries his grief quietly, like a weight he refuses to set down. he never remarried, pouring his energy into his work and his sons, who are now grown but remain the center of his world. he measures his life by what endures, family, duty, integrity, and while the past still aches, it also guides him. mateo remains focused, driven not by ambition alone, but by the memory of what was lost and the hope that fewer families will have to endure the same.

Vincente groans dramatically, dropping his head back against the leather of the chair. Speak of the Devil and he shall appear. The leader peers up at Mateo from that angle, taking in the lines of his jaw and shoulders, ensuring that it really was him that he was seeing and not an apparition made up by his irritation. “Good, the message got to the person it was meant for then.” He murmurs but his tone no longer holds the weighty, commanding threat that it normally did. Instead, the air between them is vacant of aggression for the first time since he’d become leader and in spite of the circumstances that now bound them in some sick chance of fate. Because what were the fucking odds that he’d start hooking up with a man who was also fucking the deputy chief of police?
His head rolls along the back ledge of the chair following the man’s movements as he walks past him and pulls out the chair directly in front of him. Vincente rolls his head forward then, straightening his head. Their eyes meet, there is a silent concession in the way he looks at him now because fuck Hasan, that’s why. He really should’ve killed him when he’d had the chance. Instead, he was now sitting here with said chief deputy, a man that he wouldn’t normally want to confide in.
“Do you know anything about wasps, deputy?” He asks.
“I ask because there is this cute pup who has wandered into my neighbourhood, a Turkish kangal. He’s barking up the wrong tree —” Vincente grabs the bottle of Tequila along with two glasses that are placed on the table between them with a simple wave of his hand at one of the staff. His pour is sloppy, hands trembling, not at all the practiced finesse of his younger self.
“The trunk of this tree isn’t necessarily rotten inside but it’s full of yellow-jackets. Yet, he persists.” Brown eyes flit up to meet brown, a glass is nudged across the table toward Mateo by his knuckles; a threat and a peace offering. “See, the pup believes their queen is docile, that she would never sting him. That’s because he’s not a threat yet and he’s mistaken her for a honeybee.” A long, heavy silence settles around them, stretching moments before the younger man starts again. “But if he sticks his nose too far inside the hive? I’m afraid she’ll sting him to death, make him out to be the bad guy.”
He sinks into the chair, resting his drink on the arm of it; an extension of his hand. “Let’s say that I care for this stray, that despite the danger I know is lurking in that hive for me, I choose to stand by his side anyway. If you were the queen of that swarm, Mateo, do you think I’d get stung too? Or is there a scenario where we can all co-exist despite hostilities? Because that’s what, not who, has gotten me worked up.” He downs the entire glass in one agonizing, throat-burning gulp. “Now? I have to decide if I want to call animal control despite caring for him, let the hive be, or kill its queen for our safety — wouldn’t you be worked up too?”
mateo listened quietly, letting vincente finish before reaching for the glass. he didn't drink from it. instead, he turned it slowly between his fingers, eyes fixed on the man across from him. the metaphor wasn't exactly subtle, and neither of them were stupid enough to pretend otherwise. "you've got one thing wrong," he said after a moment. "the dog isn't wandering around lost. he knows exactly what he's doing."
his gaze lifted. "the problem is that he's looking at two men and seeing people. he's not looking at the badges, the titles, the organizations, or everything attached to them. maybe that's admirable. maybe it's reckless." a small breath left him. "i haven't decided which."
mateo leaned back in his chair, studying vincente carefully. for the first time all evening, there wasn't much sarcasm in his expression. "you want to know if i'd sting you." his fingers tapped once against the side of the glass. "that depends on why you're sticking your hand in the hive." his voice remained calm. "if you're there to hurt him, yes. if you're there to use him, yes. if your decisions put him in the middle of something he can't walk away from, absolutely." he held vincente's gaze. "but if you're asking whether i wake up every morning looking for reasons to go after you because of him?" mateo shook his head. "no."
the deputy chief was quiet for a moment. "what worries me isn't you." his jaw tightened slightly. "it's that he thinks wanting something is enough to make the world cooperate. that caring about two people means the dangers attached to them disappear." he finally picked up the glass and took a drink. "life doesn't work that way." his eyes settled back on vincente. "so if you're asking me whether we can coexist? maybe. if you're asking whether it's safe?" a humorless smile appeared. "not even a little."
"Really? You know most people would get totally jealous or do you like the fact that you have seen the real me and know the real me but no one else does. Having some secret information that no one else does Mr. Deputy?" he replied with a devilish grin and smile on his face as he looked into Mateo's eyes. Still playing his game, keeping things down low between them. How they were in public was a conversation they had really not had at all.
Hasan smiled and his eyes did lit up, he noticed the male's hand brush lightly against his own. He so wished that things indeed were not complicated but they were for sure. "Someone has so much confidence and faith in a certain handsome model. Well, that same model does have the same confidence in a certain deputy too," he added with a chuckle. "Thanks, got to put my modeling skills to good use."
mateo let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head as he looked at him over the rim of his glass. “i think jealous is a young man’s game,” he said. “i’m too old and too tired for that.” there was amusement in his voice, but something warmer underneath it. “besides, i like knowing there’s a side of you most people don’t get to see.” his gaze held hasan’s for a moment longer than necessary. “i consider that one of the perks.”
he took another sip before lowering the glass. “and confidence has nothing to do with it. i’ve seen what you can do when you put your mind to something.” the corner of his mouth lifted into a knowing smile. “that applies to a lot more than modeling.” his eyes wandered briefly over him before returning to his face. “you clean up pretty damn well.” he paused, leaning in just enough that his next words wouldn't carry far. “and when this is all over and we're somewhere with a little more privacy, maybe you can remind me of some of those other skills you're always so confident about.” his smile widened slightly. “i'm sure i'd remember.”
As if someone has snapped an elastic band around the back of his head, the stuffy room combined with loud music and body heat makes a steady, frustrating pulse start at the base of Vincente's skull. The leader's stomach wobbles, dark eyes burn in his skull, and he could already feel a cold sweat clinging to certain parts of his body.
Blood sugar, normal. Blood pressure, elevated. Heart rate? 125 and climbing. His watch mirrors back to him the problem as he takes a seat in an empty chair as far away from the crowd as he could. Vincente trains his gaze ahead at the same time as someone approaches. Believing it to be one of his men (who else would be stupid enough to approach him from behind?), he allows a heavy sigh to fall from his lips. "That motherfucker looks at me wrong and I'll pop him. Cop, not a cop, whatever the fuck..." He motions to the crowd.
mateo recognized the voice before he was close enough to be noticed. under normal circumstances, he would have kept walking. vincente wasn’t a man he trusted, and certainly not one he sought out for conversation. but the connection they shared to someone important to both of them was enough to make him pause. that, and the fact that mateo had never been the kind of man to avoid an uncomfortable situation.
he stopped beside the chair, one hand slipping into his pocket as he looked down at him. “you do realize who you’re saying that to, right?” he said dryly, one brow lifting slightly. his eyes followed the motion toward the crowd before returning to vincente. without waiting for an invitation, mateo pulled out the chair across from him and sat down. “so,” he said, settling back in his seat, “who’s got you this worked up?”
Hasan was still very much surprised, he never thought he could feel something for someone. He never understood what it was like to feel real emotions until now. His heart still felt it was being ripped in many pieces and he wondered how much it can handle. Can he survive this. He could see the outcome if things go back. Right now, he did not want to think about it at the moment and just enjoy this moment.
"Really?" he spoke raising a brow with a smile. "Most people here know me as someone who would flirt with some of the most handsome people in the room. I feel like they still think am trying to get into your pants Deputy," he added teasing the male. "Come on, I will say the second best because you sir are the best looking man. Maybe you need a mirror." he winked.
mateo let out a low chuckle, shaking his head as he took a sip of his whiskey. “if they think that, i’m not about to correct them.” his eyes stayed on hasan, warm and amused, taking in the familiar confidence that had first caught his attention months ago. there was something almost surreal about standing in a crowded room and speaking like this, as though what existed between them was still a secret hidden in plain sight.
“and for the record,” he said, stepping a fraction closer so only hasan could hear him, “i’m well aware of what you can do when you set your mind to something.” the corner of his mouth lifted into a knowing smile. his hand brushed lightly against hasan’s arm, brief but deliberate. “but i appreciate the compliment.” his gaze held his for a moment longer before softening. “you clean up pretty well yourself.”

Hasan was not someone that did relationships at all, he liked being a play boy, sleeping around with no strings or emotions attached at all. That was who he was but that changed when he met two handsome men who changed all that. Hasan had fallen for them and in his mind no one else mattered. He did not want anyone else despite how complicated his relationship with them was because two of these men came from world that were enemies and putting Hasan in the middle. He was attending the Gala tonight with Mateo, he had promised to keep their relationship low key and the male was a man of his words.
He walked toward the older male and smiled, pretending that they both have not been dating for the last few months. "You look so handsome tonight. Am still surprise you are single Deputy," he replied with a devilish grin and smile on his face.
mateo turned at the sound of hasan’s voice, and despite himself, the corner of his mouth lifted. there was something about seeing him in a room like this, polished, confident, and pretending they were little more than acquaintances, that stirred something warm and familiar in his chest. over the last few months, hasan had worked his way past walls mateo had spent years building, and now the thought of walking into a crowded room without him felt strangely incomplete.
“careful,” he said, his voice low enough for only hasan to hear. his eyes moved over him for a moment, appreciating the sight before meeting his gaze again. “you’re the one making it very difficult to look single tonight.” his hand brushed lightly against hasan’s lower back, brief and subtle enough not to draw attention. “and for the record,” he added with a faint smile, “you’re the best-looking man in the room.”
Hasan could be a drug, addictive, he was someone who listened, watched and learned what made someone weak and he could use that information. His favorite thing in the world was using someone's weakness to please them, to make them moan and bring they to the point of pure bliss, leaving them asking for more. With Mateo, it was a little bit complicated, in the process he found himself also being addicted to a drug that was the other.
The kiss was hot, powerful, filled with desire and lust. Showing how badly he wanted his body to claim the male, he wanted to leave his trail all over them. He kept kissing and moaning but when the other hands and fingers curl around his cock and started stroking it was if the male woke up something inside him. It twitched powerfully in the Deputy's hand as more powerful moans escaped his lips. His body hot and yet the cool air hitting his skin.
Hasan slowly broke the kiss, pulling away and for a moment, both hands ran through the male's hair slowly as he looked into their eyes. He did not say anything, eyes like that of an hungry wolf ready to take and consume his pray. He took Mate's shirt off, exposing the male's perfect upper body. Lips moving to kiss his neck slowly as one hand started undoing the male's pants. He slowly then got on his knees, as he did leaving trail of kisses from the male's neck, to their pecs, to their abs and finally...
Unzipping the male's pants and undoing their button, he took out the male's Harding and leaking cock. Holding it and stroking it. "You are not allowed to cum understand handsome," voice powerful and fill with command. A voice that made one refuse to disobey before slowly taking him into his mouth.
mateo's breath hitched sharply as Hasan's warm mouth enveloped his throbbing cock, the slick heat sending jolts of pleasure straight up his spine. he gripped the edge of the nearby table for support, his knuckles whitening, while his other hand instinctively tangled in Hasan's dark hair, not pulling but holding on as if anchoring himself against the overwhelming sensation. the bar owner's tongue swirled around the sensitive head, teasing the slit where pre-cum beaded, before sliding down the length with deliberate slowness, taking him deeper until the tip bumped the back of hasan's throat.
a low, guttural moan escaped Mmteo's lips, his hips bucking involuntarily, pushing his shaft further into that demanding mouth. 'fuck, hasan,' he rasped, voice thick with need, his body trembling from the cool air contrasting the fire building in his core. hasan's command echoed in his mind, no cumming, not yet, and it only heightened the torment, making every suck and lick feel like exquisite torture. mateo's abs clenched, his perfect upper body glistening with a light sheen of sweat as he fought the urge to thrust harder, to chase that edge hasan so expertly controlled.
he looked down, eyes locking onto hasan's hungry gaze, the wolfish intensity mirroring his own addiction. mateo's free hand trailed down his own chest, pinching a nipple to distract from the building pressure in his balls, but it only amplified the bliss. 'you're killing me,' he groaned, thighs quivering as hasan's cheeks hollowed, sucking with rhythmic pulls that made his cock pulse and leak more onto the invading tongue. the manipulation was perfect, hasan knew exactly how to push him to the brink, using his desire against him, and mateo craved every second, already lost in the drug that was this man.
This time was so very different, Hasan had been with so many lovers but he knew deep in his bones that this was different. It was he had no control, he wanted the man so badly and he had never wanted them before. He kept thinking about that night, he never stopped and now that they were standing here. Mateo was interesting to read, there was something about him. Plus Hasan was not like anyone else, the male had guards up, he could sense that and somehow he had gotten past and also Mateo had also gotten passed his own too.
He moved in, he did not say anything but kissed Mateo, making out with him for a moment. Tasting the male's lips and then slowly taking their hand and leading him to one of the VIP room. Hasan had so much respect for the male to give them what they came for out in the open like this.
Once he was in the room, he closed the door. The room was lit and a nice comfortable bed. He slowly walked backwards, leaving some distance between them and he took off his shirt. Showing Mateo his body, pecs and abs he worked so hard for. Then his pants came off and his boxers leaving him naked and exposed. He then slowly moved closer and kissed him, making out with him as his hand slowly inserted into the male's pants. Grabbing him and stroking him slowly.
mateo's blood thrummed with exhilarating truth: lines weren't just being crossed, they were being exploited. there would be no turning back, and that sent a thrill shivering down his spine. it was a maddening, delicious torment, the way this man, hasan, had utterly colonised his thoughts, an insistent, burning presence beneath his every waking moment. he clung to the desperate lie, that if he just gave in, just this once, to the cravings he'd so fiercely suppressed, he could finally remove this man from his system, he could move on.
a breathless gasp tore from his throat as he surged forward, his mouth claiming Hasan's with a desperate hunger. lips met, devouring into a kiss that was something far beyond passionate, it was a dangerous. there was no hesitation, no holding back, as he let himself be pulled, half-stumbled, half-driven, into the hushed intimacy of a private room. here, the air crackled, thick with unspoken promises, and the situation would not just become real, it would ignite.
desire flared in mateo's eyes as they devoured hasan, who stood before him, shedding clothes with an unhurried grace that was both torture and tantalization. each discarded garment revealed more of the sculpted perfection beneath, and a low, guttural moan rumbled in mateo's chest. He let himself take in the magnificent, naked form, of hasan.
he deepened the kiss, a hungry groan swallowed by hasan's mouth, his hips buck into the skilled hand stroking his hard length, desperate for more. mateo's own hand shot out, seeking, finding, and barely managing to curl his fingers around Hasan's already straining dick, a frantic, shared rhythm beginning to build between them.
Hasan was a little bit different with the male today, he did not really make much flirty or certain comments that he would normally have made. Maybe it was because of what happened during their last interaction which changed something. He watched as the male looked through the document and permits. He studied them as if he was trying to read him the male but he got nothing.
"Yes, Deputy," he replied back with a charming smile on his face as he got closer for a moment and looked deep into the male's eyes. "I do not want any problems for sure," he added voice soft and warm. He moved away for a moment and locked the door before walking back. "I was hoping we would discuss our last conversation Deputy," he whispered as he made his way back in front of Mateo. Standing in front of the male as he slowly ran his hands through his hair and his other hand slowly explored their body.
"I meant what I said about, letting you take control and being in charge..."
this wasn’t like him. not the man he’d built himself into over the years. after his wife’s death, mateo had drawn a line and stayed behind it — work, routine, distance. it was easier that way. safer. and yet, the night at the club, the messages that followed… they’d lingered longer than they should have. there weren’t many people who could get past his guard, fewer still who made him want something more.
he drew in a slow breath when hasan stepped closer, holding his ground even as the space between them disappeared. “i figured as much,” he said quietly, his tone softening to match the other’s. he didn’t stop him when he moved away, the sound of the locks clicking settling into the room. it didn’t surprise him. not really. this was why he came.
his eyes sharpened slightly when hasan’s hand brushed through his hair, the contact pulling something to the surface he usually kept buried. his jaw tightened, just briefly, before easing again. “you know what i want,” mateo said, low and steady.
Hasan smiled as he listened the male and nodded his head. He studied the other carefully, reading their face. This was not the first time Hasan was dealing with a cop at all but he had a feeling that there was more to this and he was happy to play this game for a moment. "Please have a seat and I will be right back," he spoke before walking into his office to get all of his permit.
Hasan came back after a moment with the permit and paperwork. "Here Deputy, every is in order. It must have been a mistake or a missed up," he spoke handling the male the folder of paperwork and permits. Hasan was right made sure everything was in order.
mateo gave a small nod and took the seat without argument, posture relaxed but attentive as he waited. his gaze moved briefly around the space out of habit, noting details, exits, anything that mattered, before settling again. he didn’t rush, didn’t fidget, just waited, patient in the way years on the job had taught him.
when hasan returned, mateo took the folder and flipped it open, scanning the pages with practiced ease. it didn’t take long to find it, a date circled in his mind more than on paper. “you’ve got a week,” he said, tapping lightly against the page before closing the folder and handing it back. “cutting it close.” his tone stayed neutral, but there was something quieter underneath it.
he stood then, smoothing a hand over his jacket as if that was all this had been. routine. simple. his eyes lifted to hasan again, lingering a second longer than necessary, taking him in without trying to hide it this time. “get it renewed,” mateo added, almost absent-minded. a beat. “wouldn’t want any problems.”

Hasan had been okay with the radio silence for the last week. He totally understood and decided to give the male space. The male had been surprised how their conversation had turned out and so he just waited for them to reach out. Hasan went on with life but still thought about that night. The fun night that they had. He was glad when Mateo came into his club and was wondering if this was business or just an excuse for the male to see him.
The male had made sure that very thing was up to code and so were his permit because he did not want any trouble. After all with his older brother his business partner, Hasan did not want a lecture and plus anything Hasan did when it came to business he did well. "I am surprise one expired, I do keep a reminder to renew everything as early as possible and am surprise you decided to handle it personally," he added a smile on his face as he moved slightly closer to the other.
"Can you please tell me which one expired and I can check my records and I do have a certified copy of all my permits."
mateo didn’t step back when hasan moved closer, but he felt it, the shift in space, the way it tightened just enough to notice. his hands stayed relaxed at his sides, though his posture straightened slightly, grounding himself as his pulse picked up more than he liked.
“liquor license,” he said after a beat, voice even, controlled. his gaze held on hasan’s, steady, searching. “from what i saw, it’s either close to expiring or already has.” a brief pause. “figured it was easier to handle it in person before it turns into paperwork.”
he let that sit between them, the quiet stretching a second too long. “if you’ve got it on hand, i’ll take a look,” mateo added, tone still professional, though something underneath it lingered. “would save both of us the trouble.”
misunderstood. very diplomatically put. so much so, that javi finds himself smiling some more. "the owners simply invited as many influential people as they could. it's only their luck that those invited actually showed up. besides... no owner would want the grand opening of their carefully built new club to go unsuccessfully. curiosity is a necessity." he sips on his drink then, glancing at the band, then at the bar, then back at mateo. "quality booze also helps...?"
mateo let the corner of his mouth lift slightly, a quiet acknowledgment of the answer without fully buying into it. he took a slow sip of his drink, eyes following javi’s brief glance around the room before settling back on him.
“curiosity gets people through the door,” he said, voice even. “what keeps them here is something else.” his gaze flicked toward the bar, then the band, then back again. “booze helps,” he admitted, almost dry. a small pause. “but crowds like this don’t stick around for just a good drink.”
he tilted his head slightly, studying him without being obvious about it. “you seem pretty confident in how this place is running,” mateo added. “makes it sound like you know more than the average guest.”

Location: The Red Den (Hasan's club and Bar)
Hasan had been finishing up some paperwork, a glass of whiskey on the bar. Hasan had been surprised when he heard the door open and someone walked in. He had not been expecting anyone, especially since all delivery have be completed the day before and he had no interview schedule. He got up and turned surprise to see the Deputy. He chuckled to himself and smiled, grabbing his glass of whiskey and taking a sip before looking at the male.
"Good afternoon Deputy Mateo, what do I owe this visit," he spoke voice calm deep, seductive and sweet with something in his eyes as he looked deep into the older male's eyes. "Good to see you again."
mateo told himself it was about the paperwork. it was easier that way. easier than admitting the conversation had stuck in his head longer than it should have, threading through his thoughts in ways he didn’t quite like, or maybe liked too much. a week later, he was still thinking about it. so he found a reason.
he arrived when the place was quieter, less crowded, less noise to hide behind. his eyes found the man quickly, like they’d been looking for him the second he walked in.
“we’ve got an issue with your permits,” mateo said, voice steady, unreadable. he stepped closer, just enough to keep it between them. “one’s expired.” his gaze held, deliberate. “thought i’d come deal with it personally.”
This was the first time Hasan had seen or ran into the other. There were many people he was seeing for the first time but Mateo was a handsome guy. He sense that there was something so very interesting about the other, something that they did not show and for some reason that pulled him closer to them. Hasan had always been interested in people with mystery, he could sense a vibe. "Then how do you spend your evenings? Forgive me for making the assumption and guessing wrong but, I will guess that you prefer it reading a book or the news or even writing? You give me a writers vibe." he smiled.
"Is that so? but what if I am trying to sell you something, my time and company?" he chuckled softly as he took the other hand and shake it. "Handsome and powerful name. Nice to meet you Mateo."
"Entertainment of watching people. I did not have anything better to do and I heard there was a party with a lot of people so a chance to people watch and meet handsome complicated men."
mateo let out a small breath of amusement, lifting his glass slightly before taking another sip. “you weren’t too far off,” he admitted. “most nights i’m at home. glass of whiskey, the news on, maybe some jazz if i’m feeling generous with myself.” his shoulders lifted in a faint shrug. “it’s quieter that way. predictable.” his gaze drifted briefly over the room again, the music, the movement of people, before returning to hasan. “this has most of the same pieces, just with a few hundred extra guests.”
the comment about selling his time earned another quiet chuckle. “well, that’s an honest business model at least.” he shook his hand once before letting go, expression easy but observant. “people watching, huh?” mateo nodded slightly, as if that made sense. “can’t say it’s a bad way to pass the night.” he tilted his head a fraction. “so if this is how you spend tonight, what about the rest of them? what does hasan hilic usually do with his evenings?”
Hasan had been people watching the whole night, the male had been on his best behavior so far which was a surprise. Hasan was getting bored which was never a good thing. When the bar and club got bored that was when things starts getting interesting and he started getting into trouble. The male had been drinking but controlling himself and still very much sober, after all he did have a high tolerance. An interesting indiviual had caught his eye and Hasan could not help himself.
He walked over to the male and stood next to them, "Why do I get the vibe that you are not really a party person," he spoke with a smile on his face before taking a sip of his drink. "I thought I had met all the handsome people here but you might just be most handsome man tonight," he added with a wink.
mateo glanced over when the man approached, taking a slow sip of his drink before answering. the smile he offered was polite, easy enough for a room like this, though there was something measured behind it. “you’d be right,” he said. “parties aren’t usually how i spend my evenings.” his gaze drifted briefly across the room, the music, the crowd, before settling back on hasan. “but every now and then it’s useful to see who shows up.”
the compliment earned a quiet chuckle from him, more amused than flattered. “careful,” he said, lifting his glass slightly. “say things like that and people might think you’re trying to sell me something.” after a moment he extended his hand. “mateo ramirez.” his eyes lingered a beat, curious but calm. “so tell me, hasan, you here for the music, the company, or just the entertainment of watching the rest of us?”

oh, javi knows exactly who this man is. it's a part of the job. know who you're up against. even if he doesn't know who javi is... perhaps that's for the better. but it's only a matter of time. even if he doesn't let it known, he's been keeping tabs on any guest with the slightest connection to law enforcement. not like he wants to escalate things. no. this party is completely innocent, after all. nothing illegal happening whatsoever.
the drink in javi's hand is more water and juice than anything, an attempt to sober up for a bit as the night is still far from ending. and he must stay vigilant. the whispers said so.
"--or something terribly wrong." he hides his smile behind the rim of his glass as he takes a sip, then turns towards the man. "what draws you in? maybe the music? or... the people?"
mateo didn’t rush the moment. he observed first, spoke second. javier castillo wasn’t a man you approached without knowing at least part of the story. he rolled the whiskey once in his glass before drinking.
“i’d hate for anything to be… misunderstood tonight,” he said quietly. “places that get popular this fast tend to invite curiosity.” a small nod toward the band. “good jazz helps.” his eyes returned to javier. “but it’s rarely just the music.”
mateo made his way through the room the way he always did, slow, shaking hands where it mattered, exchanging a few quiet words, filing away names and faces for later. events like this were never just social. they were temperature checks. who was comfortable, who was watching, who was being watched. he didn’t linger anywhere too long.
his attention settled on one man more than once. maybe it was nothing. maybe it wasn’t. mateo didn’t deal in guesses, but he trusted instinct enough to listen when it nudged. he picked up a fresh drink from a passing tray and stepped up beside him, close enough to speak without raising his voice.
“seems like this place is drawing a crowd,” he said casually, taking a small sip before letting his eyes shift to the other man. “that usually means someone did something right.”
