Titania chuckles, leaning back in her chair in the quaint Frelian inn, taking in the coastal air. âI wouldnât count myself in a Generalâs number, if anyone that was Ike, for a time. No, Iâm just Deputy Commander, a Lieutenant if you would.â
She paused, looking sadly into her mug. âWell, perhaps Acting Commander is more appropriate. He left on a journey after the second major war we were a part of and I havenât seen him since; Iâd actually been hoping to find him in your lands, but he must be elsewhere.â
âIn any case, yes, I suppose. Do you have need of the Griel Mercenaries?â Vanessaâs admiration wasnât lost on the seasoned Paladin, though she felt it best not to press her for now. She just smiled warmly and openly.
For a moment, Vanessaâs excitement felt like it might be crushed. Not a general, just a deputy commander- that was a command position!!! Eyes practically sparkling, Vanessa shook her head. âNo, maâam. Not need of your mercenaries.â Just need of an...alive role model, perhaps.
For as much as Selena had done for her, just by existing (and how...horribly wide her eyes had been opened regarding her own situation, just by the Fluorspar dying), it was so...there had only ever been one female general, in Magvel in recent memory.Â
Vanessa knew, sheâd looked.
And, sometimes....she couldnât help it, because she prided herself on being infinitely practical, not wasting time on impossible hopes, sometimes she thought it might be likely there would never be one again. Who would commission a woman as a general? So few had, and the one who had...
Grado had had a woman general, and Grado had lost its collective mind. And the two were unconnected, she knew, but...she knew there was the good possibility some would say that theyâd only given Selena the command because the emperor had already lost his mind. Or had been losing it, in the process of.
So, with a sudden solemness, Vanessa shifts slightly in her seat and feels incredibly awkward. âWas it...was it hard, to become the Deputy Commander, maâam?â And acting commander afterward? Even though it was clearly not a position Titania hadnât aspired to, if that sad look was anything to go by, that was still a feat.
The questions about her hair, and her....entire self, maybe. Could come later.
