In retrospect i feel like Susie being so defeated and frustrated that toriel was home the entire time has more to do with the fact that susie has basically been on a consistent ‘losing’ streak since the end of chapter 3 than anything else:
She wasnt able to stop the knight
She wasnt able to find the shelter code
The knight made a fountain in the church during the middle of the day, presumably right after they left church (she missed her chance to catch the knight in the act.)
Susie believes that toriel is in the church this whole time. (literally one of the main things motivating her this time)
They start off right next to the fountain (yay!) only to get knocked ALL the fucking way down by the knight (oh no)
They climb back up and chase down the knight only for it to escape and lock the door behind them
Susie actually befriends an authority figure in gerson only to discover that they’ve actually just been dead the whole time.
Susie makes another fountain, is forced to fight what she thinks is a zombie version of gerson, and then finds out that ralsei has been witholding information.
They chase down the knight AGAIN, getting beat the fuck up by swords along the way AGAIN.
They manage to corner the knight, with Susie calling them out that it’s over once the fountain gets sealed.
The knight summons a titan and nearly triggers the roaring, yet they manage to make it through.
the knight escapes in the chaos, nowhere to be seen
susie sees the final prophecy that ralsei has been desperately trying to prevent us from seeing.
she and kris close the fountain and toriel is nowhere to be seen. she failed again.
susie and kris head home in the rain only to discover that this whole time toriel wasn’t even in the church and that susie’s desperate struggle literally just meant nothing.
i would cry i would actually just cry if i went through all that shit only to realize the person i was trying to rescue wasn’t even fucking there.
