Everything suddenly felt so normal and so right.
She decided to stay in Boston after graduation. Sure, she was just simply working for the city's magazine. But, on the plus, that meant she got to live with her amazing boyfriend. She used to be so against that. The thought of living with someone she wasn't married to icked her out beyond repair. Then, she met Jarren. And her views on life changed.
Jarren could say the same though. Ever since meeting her, he felt excited for what the future may hold. He was never a big planner. He usually just did things as a spur of the moment. However, he knew that when it came to her, he couldn’t just do things half way. He’d love to say he matured, but really she had just rubbed off on him.
Neither of them expected to fall for the other. They were complete opposites after all. However, that’s what made them perfect for each other. Perfection was too strong of a word for them though. They were imperfect in every way possible. That’s exactly why Jarren was planning the biggest surprise of their lives.
She came home from a long day at work, ready to just relax for the rest of the night. It was hard working and having a boyfriend who played professional baseball, but they made it work. Luckily, the season was about to be over. He should be sad. However, getting to spend time with his girlfriend made up for that. He was sitting on the couch as she walked through the door.
“Hey, baby. How was work?” He asked, immediately jumping up from the couch to go greet her with a kiss. She smiled as she dropped her purse by the door and wrapped her arms around him.
“It was good. Little boring today, but good.” Jarren smiled, wrapping his arms around her waist. He gave her a few more pecks before looking her over.
“I have a surprise for you.” He tells her. Too excited to keep it to himself any longer. She raises her eyebrows at him.
“Really? I’m scared.” Jarren rolled his eyes before guiding her to their room. He backed her down the hallway and didn’t stop until the backs of her knees hit the bed. Jarren leans forward as if he were going to kiss her before pulling away and walking to the dresser. He pulls a sheet of paper off of it before handing it to her.
“Open it.” He tells her. She opens it hesitantly. Her eyebrows knit together as she reads it.
“Plane tickets?” She asked. Jarren nods.
“I’m taking you on a trip next week.” She laughs.
“Jarren, I have work.” She folds her arms. Jarren shakes his head as he steps closer. He brings his hands up to hold her arms.
“I took care of that.”
“What? How?” She asked. Jarren offers a guilty smile.
“I may have put in a vacation request from your phone a few weeks ago.” She hits his chest causing him to laugh. “Come on, baby. It’ll be fun. I have a big plan for the week.” He tells her with a smirk.
“You have a plan?” She asked in genuine shock. Jarren nodded.
“Yep.” She looked back down to the paper before looking back to Jarren.
“Where are we even going?” Jarren got a little flustered smile as she asked. He hesitates for a moment before telling her.
“To the beach…” His words hit her like a train. Her stomach filled with butterflies when she realized what was probably happening. Her face lit up and she immediately wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a kiss. Jarren laughs against her lips. He pulls back. “You better calm down…you have no idea what I’m doing…” He playfully warns her.
“I think I might…” She says. Jarren shakes his head.
“You don’t even know the half of it, baby.” Jarren leaned forward and crashed his lips against hers. He guides her down onto the mattress and they let themselves get lost in each other. The anticipation of their week-long getaway was high. Months of being together and they still got excited for things like that.
Jarren was especially excited because he knew the week involved a small box that he was hiding in one of his drawers.

Graduation day was as hectic as she thought it would be.
With as many graduates as they had this year, she got overstimulated very easily. Luckily, she knew she had her Mom and her sisters up in the stands watching her. She should feel happy. She should feel so accomplished. She was about to get the degree she had worked her ass off for. She knew this was a big step for her.
However, she couldn’t shake the sadness. She was finally letting herself feel her emotions about the break up. She knew that she loved him so damn much. She was just stupid and never got to tell him. He probably hated her by now. That or he probably already moved on. She’s not sure she ever could move on from Jarren.
Still, she walked the stage with a big smile. She looked down to her Alpha Phi stole and realized that, maybe that was all she needed. She didn’t need a perfect boyfriend. Or even a perfect life. All she needed were the ones who truly loved her. As she walked back to her seat, she looked back over her last four years. She spent so much time being perfect, that she missed out on a lot of life.
She knew that she had to change that.
Luckily, she has a whole life ahead of her to do that.
The crowd outside of the stadium was so big it was almost suffocating. Families were taking pictures with their grads and handing them gifts. She had found her mom, Anna, and Kayla after a long search. They were taking pictures and absolutely doting on her. She noticed her mom had a little smirk on her face. She knitted her brows together at the sight.
“What’s that look for?” She asks with a laugh. Her mom smiled big at her.
“I think there’s someone else waiting for a picture with you…” She pointed behind her daughter. Her face scrunched in even more confusion as she turned. Her breath almost got knocked out of her when she saw who was standing there. Jarren stood there with a small, proud, smile as he was holding some flowers for her. He took a couple steps closer and held them out for her.
“Congrats, grad.” He tells her. She lets out a small laugh as she slowly takes them from him.
“What are you doing here?” She asked. Jarren shrugged.
“I told you I would be here.” He said it so nonchalantly. She stares at him in disbelief. She didn’t notice, but her mom and her sisters had slipped away to give them some space. She also didn’t realize that they were the ones who gave him the extra ticket. They stand in silence for a moment, just looking at each other.
“I just wanted to-” She said
“I needed to-” Jarren said at the same time. They laugh at the awkwardness of it.
“You go first.” She tells him. He shakes his head and motions for her to go.
“You go.” He smiled. She let out a breath and looked at him, a little more serious.
“I’m sorry. I know that I should’ve told you about London.” She looked down then back up again. “I’m also sorry for saying it was all fake…” She swallows. “It wasn’t…for me, it wasn’t.”
“No shit.” He teased. She rolled her eyes and laughed.
“I’m serious.” Jarren laughed and tilted his head as he listened to her. “I…I spent so long trying to make my life perfect that I missed a lot of good things. You being one of them.” She smiled softly. “You’re not perfect…but, that’s why I fell for you. You showed me that I don’t always have to stick to the plan.” Jarren’s face softened at her confession.
“I’m sorry too.” He started. “I was a dick. I shouldn’t have lashed out at you like that.” She shrugged.
“I deserved it.” Jarren shook his head.
“No, baby, you didn’t.” The pet name had her stomach doing the all-too-familiar flip. Her face flushed and she felt a small spark of hope come back. “That’s not how I should react when I’m hurt. You told me that, remember?” He gave her a little teasing smile that had her laughing. “I was just mad that my baby was leaving. I still kind of am, but I’m willing to make it work.” He stepped closer, smiling down at her. He saw how flustered she was and he knew that they were so back.
She stepped closer as well. The space between them shrinking. She took a deep breath before finally telling him.
“I didn’t take the job.” Jarren’s eyes widened at that.
“What?” She nodded. Jarren shook his head in disbelief. “Baby, that was your dream job. Why wouldn’t you take it?” She shook her head.
“It was my dream…but, I don’t want that anymore.” She takes another deep breath. “Jarren…I was basically killing myself trying to be perfect. All of that changed when I met you.” She laughs a little. “I never felt more alive than when I was with you. You took some of that stress and weight off my shoulders. And, like I said, you made me realize that I don’t have to be perfect for anyone. Not even myself.” Jarren’s heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest.
“You gave up your dream job for me?” He asks.
“I’d do anything for you.” She tells him. He was smiling so hard that his face hurt. His own words echoed from her voice and he never felt happier. He took the final step closer and reached out to hold her waist.
“You’re unbelievable, baby.” She laughs and wraps her arms around his neck. The flowers hit the back of his head, but they both just laugh it off as they hold each other.
“I am a little crazy, aren’t I?” She asks, making him laugh again.
“A little…but, that’s why I love you.” The confession slipped out before he could even think about it. His eyes widened slightly, but his smile never faltered. He didn’t care how soon it was, because he knew he meant it. She felt her heart start to pound and her smile was bigger than ever before. “Shit…did I just say that?” He asked.
“You did…” She says.
“Fuck” Jarren laughed. He shrugs it off. “Oh well, I meant it.” She laughed with him. She leaned in closer, bumping his nose with hers.
“Good…cause, I love you too.” Jarren felt as though he just won the world series. He couldn’t take it any longer. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers. She smiled against his lips as she kissed back. Sure, they were in a huge crowd and were probably getting started at. However, they didn’t care. They were in their own little world and there was nowhere else they would rather be.
Jarren pulled back first, but not before stealing a couple more pecks. He rested his forehead on hers and they just smiled at each other. He pulled back with a mischievous little smirk.
“Okay, hear me out.” He says. She laughs and then offers a playful, questioning, look.
“That sounds dangerous.” She tells him. He rolled his eyes.
“Just listen.” He bit his lip as he looked down at her. He knew exactly what he was about to do, and he was sure she would get it. “I need you to be my girlfriend.” She playfully widened her eyes, immediately getting what he was doing.
“What?!” She gasped. He laughs.
“For real this time though.” He told her. She smiled.
“So…you want me to be your real girlfriend?” She asked him. Jarren grinned.
“Can you do that for me, baby?” He asked her. She was now smiling so big her face hurt. She leaned in again, closing the distance.
“I think I can manage.” She said before pressing her lips to his again. Jarren gladly reciprocated the kiss, wrapping his arms tighter around her. He held her so tight, he was able to lift her off the ground and spin her. She laughed and pulled back as he spun her around. He placed her back on the ground and gave her a few more pecks before motioning towards her mom and sister’s.
They walk hand in hand with huge smiles on their faces. To think that he wouldn’t even know her if she hadn’t grabbed his arm at the bar.
To think that they wouldn’t be head over heels in love if it wasn’t for the deal.

Perfection could really go suck a dick.
It had been a couple days since she ended things with Jarren. To say she was a wreck would be an understatement. She had officially become robotic. She would just go through the motions of the days without so much as a crack in her face. The last time she even showed an ounce of emotion was on her way back to the car that night. She briefly told her mom what happened, but she didn’t say much.
There was really no one to blame but herself for this. She was the one who messed it all up. But what was she supposed to do? As much as it hurts to say, he wasn’t part of the plan. Jarren had never been part of her perfection. Maybe that’s why she felt so much for him.
It didn’t dawn on her how much she actually felt for him. She knew that she liked him, but she didn’t realize how much. She shut down so she didn’t have to feel it. Her mom noticed. Her sisters definitely noticed. She wasn’t even like this after her break up with Brady.
Her mom, Anna, and Kayla were currently out shopping with her for her graduation dress. They noticed how emotionless her face was as she tried on different white options. She stood in front of the shop's mirror, looking at her figure in the dress she was currently trying on.
“That one’s beautiful, honey.” Her mom tells her. Her lips didn’t even curve a little at the compliment. Her mom was officially worried.
“I don’t like the skirt.” Is all she says before turning back to the other options that were sitting on the couch. She starts picking through the pile of dresses. Anna and Kayla share a look of worry as their friend continues her robotic movements.
“Whats wrong with the skirt?” Kayla asks. She just shrugs.
“It’s too tight.” Her mom was officially fed up. She looks at Anna and Kayla with a polite smile.
“Why don’t you two go find some more options.” They immediately understand why she asked them to do that. They nod and walk towards the racks to start searching for more dresses. She turned back to her daughter, her look of worry reappearing on her face. “You gonna tell me why you’re acting like that?”
“Acting like what?” She asks nonchalantly.
“Acting like you don’t have feelings.” Her mom grabs her hand to get her attention. “Talk to me, sweetie. What's wrong?” She gently pulls her hand away.
“Nothing. I’m fine. I just want to find a dress and go home.” She walks back to the mirror to try and see if it would help her get the zipper down.
“You’re not fine. You’ve been acting off since the game. What happened with him, honey?” The mention of Jarren had her freezing up. She shakes it off and goes back to trying to pull the zipper down.
“We broke up.” Is all she says. Her mom rolls her eyes and stands up.
“I know that. Why did you break up though?” She continues tugging at the zipper, her restraint cracking as she gets more frustrated at the questions along with the clothes.
“It doesn’t matter. Stop asking. I just want to get this off.” She starts breathing a little heavy as she tugs at the zipper. “Fuck, why won’t this come off?” Her mom finally sees the crack in emotions as she tugs at the zipper. Tears well in her eyes and her tugging starts to get weaker. Her mom is immediately by her side as she starts crying right there.
“Shh, hey, it’s okay. I’m here, baby.” She melts into her Mom’s touch as she finally gives up on the zipper. Her Mom wraps her arms around her and pulls her back to sit on the couch with her. She cried into her Mom’s shoulder for a minute before pulling back.
“I’m a horrible fucking person.” She cries. Her mom cups her face and uses her thumbs to wipe her tears away.
“What are you talking about, honey? You’re not horrible.” Her mom reassures her. She shakes her head.
“I am. I’m horrible.” She cries more. “I ruined everything. I hurt him. The one person who ever truly saw me is gone now, because of me.” Her mom’s eyes soften at her confession.
“Babygirl, what happened?” She asked her daughter softly. She sniffled as she finally calmed down enough to explain.
“It started off as a deal. We were fake dating for his image and to get Brady off my back. Then, it got real. And then I went and fucked it up.” Her mom was a bit taken back at that, but she still listened intently.
“How did you mess it up?” Her mom asked her.
“The job messed it up. Then I told him the whole thing was fake.” Her mom looked as if she was thinking. She dropped her hands from her daughter's face as she thought.
“That’s all?” Her mom asked. She nodded slowly.
“Yes.” Her mom lets out a small laugh.
“Honey, that seems like two very minor problems. You seriously broke up over that?” She huffs at her mom’s words.
“They aren’t minor, Mom. One literally places me in another country.” She turns and stares at the wall. “It wouldn’t work out, he said it himself.”
“He’s full of shit.” Her mom laughs. She looks at her mom with knitted eyebrows. Her mom smiles at her. “Honey, he seems like the type to act on emotion. I can tell you right now that he probably didn’t mean anything he said to you.”
“You didn’t see the look on his face, Mama.” She sighs. “He looked so hurt.” Her mom grabbed her hand.
“Sweetheart, you can’t be that hurt by someone you don’t love.” Her eyes widened slightly at her Mom’s words. She laughs awkwardly.
“He-...He doesn’t love me…” She tries to say. Her mom gives her a knowing look.
“I saw the way he looked at you. There was nothing but love in that man’s eyes.” She shakes her head.
“No…No, there’s no way. We haven’t known each other for that long.” She says. There was no way he could actually love her. They barely knew each other. He only knew her class schedule, and her coffee order, and her reason for choosing Alpha Phi, and the reason why she hated bees.
“Well sweetie…when you know, you know.” Her mom’s words echo in her head as she replays the last few months with Jarren. Sure, the circumstances they met under were crazy. However, they learned more about each other in a few months than her and Brady did in years. Did he actually love her? It was hard to believe. Then, she remembers the honeybee.
Jarren literally went out of his way to change his pre-game routine for her. Sure, it was a stupid little drawing on his wrist tape. But, it meant something to her. It was his way of helping her get over her bee problem. The honeybee was the moment that she fell head over heels for him. She sighed.
“Well, it doesn’t matter now…cause I’m going to London. I’m going to stick to my plan.” She says, wiping the remaining tears from her face. Her mom gave her a look of sympathy.
“Is that really what you want?” She thinks about her mom’s words.
“It’s what was a part of my plan.” She says softly. Her mom huffs.
“Sweetie, please. Drop the perfect act for one second and just be real with yourself.” She turned to her mom. She lets out a huff now.
“I don’t know what I want, Mom. I just know that I refuse to be Dad. I want to have a good job. I want to have a good life. I don’t want to be angry at the world because my life is shit.” Her mom gives her hand a squeeze.
“Putting yourself in a box is what’s going to make you miserable. Honey, look at you. You’re already the complete opposite of your father.” Tears well up in her mom’s eyes now. “You have compassion. You have the drive. And you love so deeply. Babygirl, I couldn’t be prouder of you.” She lets out a tear filled laugh with her daughter.
“Well what do I do? Jarren probably doesn’t want me anymore. I can’t throw my future away for a maybe.” Her mom pulls her closer to wrap her arms around her again.
“You also shouldn’t throw something as good as Jarren away for a job you don’t even know if you want.” She sighs and melts into her mother’s touch. “You have to be honest with yourself, honey. Do you love him enough to take that risk?” Her mom’s question sinks in and she thinks. She knew that she had never felt this way about anyone before. She knew that the thought of never seeing Jarren again pained her. She knew that she would rather see a million more poorly drawn honeybees than get on a plane.
Everything clicked and she finally realized something…
She did love him enough to take the risk.
The crack of the bat was extra loud today.
Jarren had officially turned BP into his rage-zone. The other guys on the team could see the shift immediately. It was almost like he was back to his old self…just ten times worse. They realized soon enough that something had to happen with his relationship. No one was going to say anything though. They knew that would end badly.
The past couple days felt like a hangover for Jarren. He had lost sleep from overthinking and he was extra moody. He kept thinking back to the nights they spent together. Wondering if any of it ever meant anything to her. He wanted to be mad at her. He wanted to blame her for all of it.
He knew he couldn’t though. At the end of the day, it was always supposed to end. He knew he was never supposed to be a part of her perfect life. That was the part that was hurting him the most. He saw this coming from a mile away. Yet, he still let himself fall for her. He kicked himself for it.
“Are you done being an asshole?” Tolle asks Jarren. He had walked up while Jarren was wiping the sweat from his forehead. He rolled his eyes at Tolle’s comment.
“Are you done sticking your nose in my business?” Jarren fires back.
“Nope, never. And stop trying to offend me. That doesn’t work on me.” Tolle gives him a smile. Jarren rolled his eyes again. “Trouble in paradise I assume?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.” Tolle hums, not walking away.
“Yeah, well, I do. So, start talking.” Jarren huffs.
“We broke up.” Is all he says. Tolle gasps, feigning shock.
“No way! I would’ve never guessed!” Jarren gave him an annoyed glare. “Come on, man. What happened?” Jarren let out a sigh before finally explaining.
“It was all fake. We just pretended to make me look good.” Tolle was everything but convinced that that was it. He crosses his arms as he analyzes Jarren.
“Mkay…so skip to the part where you actually fell in love with her.” Jarren lets out a dry laugh.
“Okay, love is wild. We’ve only known each other for a few months.”
“When has it ever taken a guy longer than three months to fall in love with a girl? Be serious man.” Jarren glared for a second. He knew that Tolle was right. Jarren had tried to convince himself it was anything but that. However, with the way he was feeling about the break up, he knew it wasn’t just from liking her.
“Fine…I think…it just happened, man. One day it was fake, then the next I was ready to do anything she wanted me to. It’s like she put me under some spell. I don’t know, it sounds stupid.” Tolle finally offered an approving smile.
“So, you did find the one?” Tolle had a little smirk. Jarren rolled his eyes again.
“We broke up. It’s not like she felt the same anyway.” Tolle gives him an unconvinced look.
“Really? Cause Dev was talking to me about how in love she looked with you.” Jarren’s eyes snapped back up to him.
“Don’t bullshit me right now, man...” Tolle shook his head.
“I’m not. Dev said that when she watched you play, she couldn’t tear her eyes away from you. Not only that, she would talk so highly of you to her.” The words hit Jarren like a train. Did she actually love him? He thought back to every interaction he had with her. The way she would look at him when he talked about his games, how she knew just the right words to calm him down, how she would kiss him. He knew that she didn’t do physical things with just anyone. So he had to mean something to her.
“Well, it’s too late now.” Jarren sighed. “I basically told her to fuck off.”
“Well, that’s not shocking.” Tolle snickers. Jarren swats at his arms.
“Fuck you.” Tolle holds his hands up in defense.
“Don’t get mad at me. I’m just saying, you have a knack for lashing out at people. Hence why, you needed her in the first place.” Jarren knew he couldn’t argue with him. He knew that the way he acted was the whole reason he made the deal in the first place. He felt like such a dick.
“She’s going to London. She doesn’t need me.” The more excuses he made, the more Tolle pushed.
“And you’re just going to let her?” Tolle laughed. “Dude, if you love her, then you need to suck it up and find a way to make it work.”
“Yeah? It’s not that simple man. I already have a busy ass life. Her living on the other side of the globe isn’t going to make my life easier.”
“Obviously not, but giving up is a real wuss move.” Tolle gave him one more pat on the shoulder before walking away. Jarren stood and thought about what Tolle said. It was going to be difficult, that was a fact. However, he loved her. So damn much. More than he thought he could.
It was crazy to him, honestly. One second he was living his normal life, then, all of the sudden, the girl of his dreams was just dropped into his life. And boy, did he fall for her, hard and fast. It didn’t take much for him to become obsessed with her. Hell, the girl had him re-debating his whole "marriage is a scam” thought process. He never expected that to happen.
Maybe she was moving to another country. Maybe this did start as a deal. However, things changed. And his need for her in his life was way bigger than the distance that was going to be between them. He felt so stupid. He shouldn’t have let her walk away. The realization dawned on him…
He needed to go get his girl before she got on that plane.

The rules were officially fucked.
Literally and figuratively.
Formal night was officially one of Jarren’s favorite nights ever. Not only did he get laid, but he also got the girl he was head over heels for. Sure, they hadn’t really talked much about what this actually was over the past week and a half. However, they just knew they were obsessed with one another. Almost every night, they were over at each other’s places. There wasn’t much talking going on, so that’s another reason why the whole “title” conversation hadn’t been brought up.
Jarren was okay with it though. He was just glad that he finally had her. She was also glad she finally had him. Her mind was reeling though. She still hadn’t heard back from the magazine in London. She had honestly given up on it. Her only problem is, now she doesn’t know what the plan is after graduation.
She spent the past week and a half trying to make a back up plan. Though, having mind blowing sex every night was starting to distract her a little bit. Other than the sex though, the dynamic didn’t change much. She would go to games and listen to him rant about them. He would help her study and listen to her rant about job applications. The only difference was the fact they would end up in bed after all of that.
Mornings were also things that changed. Neither of them would wake up alone anymore. Jarren honestly thought he was dreaming half of the time. He would hold her a little extra close the morning after a fun night. It was honestly extremely domestic. Though, she kept thinking about graduation only being a week away now. She wondered if this was going to be a permanent thing. She wanted it to, but she also knew that it was so not part of her plan.
Though, it was hard to think about a plan when she would wake up to kisses being pressed to her bare shoulder. Much like this morning. She started to stir when she felt a familiar pair of lips on her skin. A soft smile painted her lips as she shifted to lay on her back. She opened her eyes to see Jarren smiling down at her. He didn’t speak, just leaned down to capture her lips in a sweet kiss. She hums against his lips before he pulls away.
“Good morning to you too.” She teases. Jarren just laughs. One of his hands was currently running along the curve of her waist under the covers.
“Good morning, beautiful.” His morning voice along with the compliment had her face flushing. He always did have that effect on her. She reached up to hold his face in her hands.
“Have I told you how much I love your morning voice?” She asked with a giddy smile.
“Only every morning for the past week.” He replied with a laugh. He leans down to give her one more peck before pulling back. “You’re still coming to the game tonight, right?” He asks. She nods with a smile.
“Wouldn’t miss it.” Jarren couldn’t help the big, goofy, grin that he got on his face. He only got that when he was with her.
“Ugh, you’re so perfect.” He groans dramatically before attacking her neck with kisses. Her laughs fill the room as he rolls on top of her to continue kissing all over her. “What. Did. I. Do. To. Deserve. You.” He punctuates each word with a kiss to either her face or her neck. She ruffles his hair as she giggles from the kisses.
“Alright, alright, I need to check my email. Get off of me.” She tells him. Jarren groans into her skin before popping his head back up.
“You finished finals early, why do you need to check anything?” He pouts dramatically. She rolls her eyes at his complaints.
“I need to know that I have a job after I walk the stage.” She reminds him, making him roll his eyes.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, all that corporate bullshit.” She scoffs and playfully shoves his shoulder.
“Hey! Not everyone can be a professional athlete!” Jarren just smiled down at her. She leans up and rests her hand on his neck. She gives him one more firm kiss before pulling away. She smiles at him softly. “Go shower or something. Busy yourself so I can figure this out.” She tells him. Jarren smiles back at her before dramatically rolling his eyes.
“Ugh, fine.” He groans before rolling off of her. She laughs before getting out of bed. Jarren leans back on his elbows as he watches her walk to her dresser to find clothes. His eyes rake over her body. “You know…I can’t busy myself if you’re going to distract me like that.” He teases. She rolls her eyes as she tugs on one of her sets.
“It’s not my fault you’re easy.” She teases back.
“It is your fault actually.” He finally stands and walks up behind her. He wraps his arms around her waist before pressing a few kisses behind her ear. “You’re just so damn hot.” He says low into her ear. She lets out a small giggle before prying herself from his arms.
“Go busy yourself.” She says firmly. Though, she wears an amused smile as she says it. She pushes at his chest then walks out of her room. Jarren groans again before walking towards her bathroom.
She stands at the kitchen island with her laptop open. She was multitasking, making breakfast and checking her email. She scrolls through when she finishes putting a bagel in the toaster. When the hope of any job offer finally fades from her, she hears a ding on her computer. A new email popped up, and the subject of the email had her eyes shooting out of her head.
Official Offer Of Employment
It was from the magazine company in London. Her stomach twists and she opens the email. They were offering her a job as the PR assistant and she was supposed to start the week after graduation. This is everything that she ever wanted. This is everything that she ever planned for. So, why wasn’t she excited?
The thought of packing up her life and moving across the globe was officially real now. She always dreamed of an opportunity like this, but for some reason, she was hesitant to reply to the email. Maybe she was just nervous. Maybe this was her version of excitement. Or maybe the reason she was holding back was currently using her shower right now. She realized that she still had yet to tell him that this job is in London.
She was pulled from her thoughts when she heard a knock at her door. That was weird. Jarren was the only one she expected to come over. She walks over and opens her door. Shock paints her face when she sees who it is.
“Mom?!” She asks in shock. Her mom smiles and brushes past her into her apartment.
“How’s my girl doing?” Her mom asks, pulling her into a hug. She reciprocates the hug with a surprised smile.
“Good, but Mama, what are you doing here?” She asks, pulling back. Her mom laughs at the question.
“Sweetie, did you forget that I was coming up this week to help prep for graduation?” Her eyes widened when she realized that she did forget. She also forgot to tell her mom a lot about things that happened this semester. Which is why her mom asks, “So…how’s single life treating you? I haven’t heard any updates since New Years!” She inhales sharply. Sure, she texted her Mom all the time. However, she may have forgotten to mention she was in a fake relationship. She tried to figure out what to say to her. Unfortunately, Jarren picks that time to walk out.
“Hey, baby, have you seen my phone?” Jarren was looking down as he was putting his belt back on, not realizing there was another person in the house. Of course, he also didn’t have his shirt on yet. Her mom’s eyes widened at the unknown man in her daughter's apartment. She clears her throat to get Jarren’s attention.
When he looks up, his eyes go wide as he sees the extra person in the house.
“Oh…hi.” He greets awkwardly. Her mom looked back at her with a look of pure shock. She sighs.
“Um, okay…” She walks over to stand next to Jarren. “Mom, this is Jarren.” He offers a small, awkward, wave. Her mom looks him over, analyzing him.
“Does Jarren own a shirt?” Her mom asks. Jarren laughs awkwardly before walking back to the bedroom to grab his shirt. He re images a few seconds later, tugging it on. The room falls into awkward silence as the three of them just look between each other. She didn’t know how to tell her mom about her situation with Jarren. Jarren didn’t know whether or not he should say anything. Her mom was just taking in the sight of her daughter with a new man.
“Listen-” Her mom interrupts her by holding her hand up. She falls back silent as her mom walks up to the couple. She looks between them for a second more before smiling softly.
“You two make a cute couple.” Her mom says. Both Jarren and her look at each other in shock for a second before looking back to her mom.
“We do?” Jarren asked nervously. Her mom nods.
“Wow…okay, um. Jarren was just leaving.” She says, placing a hand on his shoulder. Her mom raises an eyebrow at her, but doesn’t protest. Jarren looks down at her in confusion, but doesn’t argue. He just nods with a polite smile.
“I was…” He goes to walk away, but stops short. “Is she coming to the game tonight?” Jarren asks her, pointing to her mom and wearing a teasing smile. She shoots him a look, but before she can say no, her mom perks up.
“Is that an official offer?” Her mom asks Jarren. Jarren smiles over to her mom and nods.
“Yes ma’am, it is. How could I not invite my girl’s mom?” Hearing Jarren call her that had her breath hitching. He’s called her that before, but it was a part of the deal. Now, she questions if it is or not. He never said it directly to her, only to other people. That’s why she assumes he’s probably still playing into the act. She sighs and nods.
“Yeah…did you want to come with me tonight, Mama?” She asks her mom.
“Of course I would!” Jarren smiled in excitement. Her mom immediately offered him a hug and he accepted it. When he pulled back, he grinned over at her. He leans over to her to steal a quick peck before finally walking towards the door.
“See you tonight, baby.” He nods to her mom. “You too. Mom.” Her mom gives a little knowing smile as he disappears out of the apartment.
“I gotta say…definately a step up from Brady.” Her mom says. She huffs. Her mom looks her over as if she was analyzing her daughter. “Everything okay, hun?” Her mom asks. She didn’t know how to form words. So, she walked over to her still open laptop and turned it to her Mom.
Her mom went to look at it. When she sees the email, her eyes go wide.
“Oh my goodness, honey! That’s amazing! You just landed your dream job!” She claps for her daughter. When she looks up and sees her face, her own face drops. “Why don’t you look happy about it?” She thinks about telling her Mom the truth, but then she just shrugs.
“I don’t know…I guess I’m just nervous…” Her mom isn’t convinced, she can tell. However, she wasn’t going to push her daughter for information if she wasn’t ready to share it.
“Don’t be. You’ll do great!” She tells her. She just smiles softly at her mom. Her mom just gives her a quick peck on the cheek before turning towards the bathroom. “Be right back sweetie, then we can talk all about this new job and new boyfriend.”
Lord, she hated lying to her Mom.
That night at the game felt a little different. Everything felt more real, more tense. She did her normal routine of going down to wish him good luck. Jarren’s smile was bigger now. Which made her feel even worse. She knew she needed to tell him about London. However, she didn’t even know how to approach it.
She honestly didn’t even know if she wanted to go anymore. It was weird. One small change in her perfect plan and now she was reanalyzing everything. But, how could you not when a man like Jarren comes into your life? She didn’t know what any of it was or what any of it meant to him. She just knew what it meant to her.
She did hold back a little. Only because she was still thinking about how he acted in front of her Mom. It was almost like he was wanting to keep up the act. Maybe it was still fake to him after all. Why else would he act like that? Maybe Jarren inviting her Mom was also another ploy to make himself look better. She tried not to think that way, but she couldn’t help it.
As they wait for Jarren, her Mom couldn’t help but try and talk to her about London. She had tried a couple times to change the topic, but her Mom just kept going. Finally, Jarren came out, interrupting their conversation. He immediately walks up to her and plants a kiss on her forehead.
“You guys have a good night?” He asks with a big smile. Her Mom immediately beams up at him.
“We sure did! You played a great game tonight.” Jarren laughs softly at her Mom’s praises.
“Thank you, means a lot.” He looked down to his girl with a little analyzing look. “What’s with the worried look?” He asked. God, how could he read her so well? She was ready to make up an excuse. To tell him that it was just graduation stress. However, she couldn’t get a word out. Mainly because her Mom decided to spill the beans.
“She’s stressed about London, but I keep telling her she’s going to do great!” Everything froze at that moment. Jarren’s face scrunched in confusion while her eyes widened. Her mom noticed the shift and her brows furrowed.
“London?” Jarren turned back to her. She looked at him, not knowing what to say. She swallowed as she tried to come up with words.
“Sweetie…did you not tell him about your job?” Her Mom asks. When she saw the look on her daughter's face she realized exactly why she had been so stressed that day.
“Your job?” Jarren repeats. “The job I helped you prep for. It’s in London?” She could see the look on Jarren’s face. It was a look that she’d never seen on him before. It was almost as if he was hurt.
“Okay um…I’m going to go start the car…” Her Mom says awkwardly. She slowly starts backing away, leaving Jarren and her daughter to discuss this insane situation. Jarren crossed his arms as he looked at her.
“You never told me it was in London…” He says low. She sighs and runs a hand down her face.
“It just…slipped my mind…” She tried to say. Jarren scoffed.
“It slipped your mind?” He shakes his head in disbelief. “You didn’t think to tell me that I was helping my girlfriend apply for a job in London?” She could hear the frustration in his voice. She huffs as she goes to argue.
“I didn’t think I was going to get it, Jarren. Besides, it was fake. I didn’t realize it was a need to tell you.” More hurt flashed across Jarren’s face at her words. She realized what she had said and immediately scolds herself. She goes to apologize, but Jarren was already starting.
“Right…it was all fake. The kissing, the sex, the nights I spent at your place, it was all fake, right?” He scoffs again. “Don’t bullshit me right now. None of that was fake. And you’ve had since formal to tell me about this job.”
“That’s not what I meant, okay? I know these past couple weeks haven’t been fake, Jarren. But, you don’t understand how hard it was to find the right words to tell you!” She said.
“A simple “hey, by the way, I’m leaving for London after I graduate” would have been perfect!” They’ve both officially snapped. “I mean, shit, what was the plan? You were just going to dump me before getting on the plane?” He asks. The vulnerability in his tone made her feel even more like shit.
“No, that’s not it.” She huffs and runs a hand down her face. “What do you want from me, Jarren? This has been my plan for years. This is my dream. What am I supposed to do? Throw it all away?!” Jarren falls silent at her words. He took them in as he stared at her. She was right. What did he want from her? He always knew that he didn’t fit into her perfect little life. So there was no point in him being selfish.
“You’re right. This is your plan and I’m not supposed to be a part of it.” He tells her.
“Jarren, that’s not it-” He holds his hand up to stop her from continuing.
“I’m not perfect. I don’t fit in your life. You deserve someone who does. So, I’m not going to hold you back from this.” She felt her heart sink at his words.
“Come on…you don’t actually believe that, do you?” She asks, tears welling in her eyes. “We can make it work.”
“Make what work? It’s all fake, remember?” That was the part that hurt her. Jarren’s expression hardens and he looks down. “It was supposed to end by your graduation. You graduate in a week, so we mine as well end it now.” She lets out a soft scoff.
“Seriously? That’s what you’re going to do?” Jarren looked back up at her and nodded.
“It’s what needs to happen so you can go back to being little miss perfect.” She could tell that he was just lashing out. She knew that he was hurt and was just deciding to take it out on her. She knows that she probably deserves it, but it still hurts nonetheless.
“Wow…” Is all she says. Jarren just shrugs, his expression still hard.
“Glad the deal worked out for us.” He says. She just shook her head in disbelief. His emotionless expression had anger bubbling up. Instead of blowing up at him though, she just starts walking away. She stops at the door and turns to him one more time.
“You know…just because you’re hurt doesn’t mean you get to be an ass to others.” Then, she turns and is out the door. Jarren just stands there, thinking about everything that just happened. He knew that lashing out at her like that probably hurt her. However, he didn’t know how else to act. That was what he was used to.
As she walks to the car, tears start streaming down her face. How did she let things get this far? She knew that when feelings got involved, it messed things up.
She hated that she had to learn that lesson the hard way.
