PC 23 at Pistons and Props 2016
After a four and a half year restoration the PC 23 finally hit the track again in September. A brief shakedown and a thorough checkover showed no problems before the Sywell Classic - Pistons and Props weekend held over the 24th & 25th of September.
Asked what it was like to drive for the first time Patrick said “This car means a lot to me and I was very keen to drive it myself, more for sentimental reasons than anything else. I’ll admit I was extremely nervous before the first run, I’ve not driven a car like this for a while but once I got it moving everything fell back into place.”
After the first installation run things moved on quickly to tuning the boost control and bedding brakes. “The boost control was a bit of a concern, this car has both mechanical and electronic boost control and not having a clear starting point on wastegate springs vs. ambient atmospheric conditions is not ideal. We started low and worked up which is easier said than done when you are trying to acclimatise to the level of acceleration these cars have. But it was in the ball park and we got there without over-boosting it.”
With post shakedown checks complete it was onto the Sywell Classic. “It was a great weekend” says Patrick “I felt a lot more comfortable in the car, it’s an honour to drive and the Ilmor 265D pulls like a train. The whole event was just terrific.”
Asked if there were any issues - “No, none with the exception of the wind which was very high, over 30mph. These cars produce so much downforce that in the headwind initially it was grounding out at about half way down the runway on the return run which it was not doing on the outbound run down wind.” Asked if this was an issue in period - “Yes it was, particularly on the ovals. In my time (the late 1990′s) the cars would bottom a lot. I was an engine guy so I just listened to the drivers comments but having now experienced it, well it’s much more alarming than perhaps I’d considered at the time. During our research for Jade Gurss “Beast” Nigel Bennett had told us that he felt part of the failure (of Team Penske) to qualify for the ‘95 race was down to the drivers being spooked by the wind at the pre-month of May test. I can tell you the wind really affects these things even down at 170mph. You really feel it as it changes direction both in steering input, as in yaw, and with the ride height changing as the downforce level varies. In this case we had some tools to deal with it, the ride height is really easy to adjust on these cars and you have the monobump system as well. By Sunday we were going a good deal faster and the bottoming was pretty much eliminated.”
Asked if he had any other initial impressions Patrick observed “I’ve not driven it enough to really get an impression but certainly the drivability is very good, surprisingly so. There is turbo lag but the midrange torque masks it to a large extent, more so than say the PC 26 which is much more top end bias power curve. I’m sure the drivability is helped by the tractability of the PC 23 chassis which is outstanding. I couldn’t feel the monobump engage, which suggests it’s nice and progressive, but it certainly works. I’m not surprised Nigel Mansell thought it had traction control.”
Overall do you consider this restoration an achievement? “Yes, very much so. To go from the condition it was in on arrival to driving this car has been a huge effort from my team and our colleagues elsewhere. I don’t want to leave anyone out but the efforts of James Waddington, MCT on the carbon work and Ady Matthews at Historic Fabrication were huge. To top it all off Tom and Ian Castle did a magnificent job on the paintwork. I’d also like to thank our friends in the USA without who’s support we would never have been able to complete this car in the original condition it’s in - it’s been a real team effort and I’m very grateful to all who have been involved.”
Suzuki XR85/Ducati GP3 Photoshoot
We have a few bike events planned for this year starting with a photo shoot with James Ward (farmstudios.com) at Junction 11 Studio’s in Banbury. With Kevin Schwantz last GP bike now recommissioned courtesy of Nathan Columbi and the GP3 due to appear at Bournemouth in May it seemed like ideal timing.
One of the challenges was to figure out how to stand the bikes upright without a paddock stand. Tom Castle came up with a neat solution.
Junction 11 is a great place to work from. It’s very well equipped and the studios are large and clean. There is also an endless supply of coffee which comes in handy.
With the body on shots completed the Suzuki is stripped for James to get into the detail work. Don’t be fooled by the confused expression of the guy with the beard. He knows what all that stuff on the side of the bike does...
One down, Tom wheels the Ducati into place for James to start over....
The Behind the scenes story of the making of Sky's F1 Senna feature. Oli Francis and his team were extremely professional and above all calm in the face of multiple driver changes, camera rigging and sound system fitting. The whole day was well organised and ran to plan. We ran the Lotus at 3.4 Bar boost and allowed the drivers to drive the car as quick as they felt was safe. Damon came in after only a handful of laps assuring us all that he was having too much fun and knew it was time to park it - an unusual level of self restraint in a driver. Martin did an exceptional job as he did the last time he drive the car and was ever the consummate professional. Bruno is a gentleman and extremely articulated - a great experience to work with him. Our thanks to all the crew, well done and I hope you enjoyed making this feature as much as we did.
Senna 20 Anniversary at the RAC Club
The RAC Club on London's Pal Mall has been a focal point for the 20th anniversary of the passing of Ayrton Senna, specifically the celebration of his life and his legacy. The Lotus has been displayed on the rotunda thought the last ten days in addition to a beautiful Ducati 916 Senna.

Brundle Flat Out at Donington - Senna Tribute Filming
The Lotus 98T is finally back in action. To commemorate the life of Ayrton Senna Martin Brundle drove the car at Donington on Tuesday 8th April for Sky’s forthcoming coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix in addition to other features making up Sky’s Senna Week. Martin’s first outing in the car was for ITV some years ago but due to time constraints was only able to work up to about 70% performance over 4 laps.
On this occasion we let Martin, who was arch rival to Senna in Formula 3, drive the car to it’s full capability for over 25 laps of the Leicestershire circuit. At the end of the day he claimed “I could not have driven that car faster if I wanted to. You could bolt soft tires on it and qualify it.” While that prospect was a little scary these cars were designed to be fire-breathing monsters not museum pieces and to see and hear the car at full speed again was a great privilege.
The sight of Bruno Senna pulling out of pitlane was an erie reminder of the 1986 season and we were thrilled to have Damon Hill also experience the last of the unrestricted turbo engines.
Due to legislation we were asked to cover up the JPS branding which we achieved with the help of our friends at PTM Design. The finish, particularly on the carbon fibre wings, looked very convincing.
We are also very grateful to our friends at MCT and Classic Team Lotus who have been extremely supportive during a difficult rebuild.
Sky's coverage of "Senna Week" Starts on Saturday 26th of April.

BEAST by Jade Gurss anounced
Over the last few months our MD has been looking tired but clearly he's been excited about something.... and that something has been announced today over in the USA.
BEAST is the new book by New York Times best-selling author Jade Gurss. It follows the incredible story of the Ilmor 265E engine, known to most as the Mercedes-Benz 500I, from it's inception to the indelible mark it left on IndyCar racing after the 1994 Indy 500.
Patrick has been heavily involved with the book from the beginning and has been assisting Jade with the technical aspects that are inevitably a part of the story. To supplement this he's now modeled a significant part of the engine in addition to parts of the standard 265D and the PC23 gearbox to produce a series of illustrations.
"Modeling the engine has been a real eye opener," said Patrick "I knew it was a neat engine but I hadn't appreciated just how clever it was. The valvegear and the general packaging, once you get into it in detail, is incredible."
"I could not have completed this book without Patrick's help and generosity," said Gurss, a former Ilmor employee. "It's focused upon the people who designed, built and raced the engine in an almost impossible timeframe, and we needed the technical and engineering details to be absolutely accurate. Patrick helped make so much of that possible. I will be forever in his debt for his generosity and input into BEAST."
The book will dispel many myths about the engine both technically and in the context of the CART / IRL split.
BEAST will be available on bookshelves in May.
Repairs to the Lotus are nearly complete
Following the accident at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year Lotus 98T 04 has undergone repair-work here at Sywell. While we all would rather the accident had not happened if the car is going to run at events, and bring with it the memories and joy of a time gone past, you have to accept incidents such as this might happen.
The Lotus has only been demonstrated by professional drivers such as Gary Ward and Martin Brundle during it's current ownership. We were all extremely relieved Gary walked away unhurt and will be very pleased to see him back in the car in the very near future demonstrating it at his usual high standard.
Despite how the accident looks in the footage the damage was surprisingly light. The tub was virtually untouched with only a small whiteness on each side where the front lower wishbones contacted it. These have now been painstakingly repaired to as high a standard as can be achieved both structurally and cosmetically. The two photographs below show the damaged areas having been repaired. It is fair to say they are almost completely invisible.
The car is now going back together in ernest and we hope to have it complete and running in the next few weeks.
A statement on the Sywell Classic
We have received various enquiries regarding the Sywell Classic "Pistons & Props" event. We would like to make the following points:
The event is being organised and run by Live Promotions, the organisers of the Race Retro show.
Dawn Treader Performance has had informal talks with Live Promotions but is in no way involved in the organisation or running of the event.
Tickets for the event are not available via Dawn Treader Performance.
The Sywell Classic is not the Sywell Airshow which is a not for profit event run bi-anually in aid of the Northamptonshire and Warwickshire Air Ambulance.
The Facebook page for the Sywell Classic claims that an Indy 500 winning car will be running at the event. This claim is set below a photograph of the Penske PC-26 we restored in 2006. The Penske PC-26 did not compete at Indianapolis as it was run by the team in 1997 after the CART / IRL split. If the Sywell Classic has obtained the use of an Indy 500 winning car for the event it is not through ourselves and is not the PC-26 pictured in the photograph.
We hope the Sywell Classic will be a great success for it's organisers and informal discussions have taken place regarding a possible entry for Gary Ward driving one of our Formula 1 cars at the event.

DT and AA Grand Tour raise £438 for the Air Ambulance
Today, Patrick Morgan, Managing Director of Sywell Aerodrome-based Dawn Treader Performance Ltd, handed a cheque for £438 to the Northamptonshire and Warwickshire Air Ambulance. The money was raised thanks to participants in the 2013 AA Grand Tour visiting Patrick Morgan’s collection of historic racing cars and the workshop where his company prepares, in particular, historic racing cars and motorcycles.
“The air ambulance, although vital to the district as a whole, is also there to assist should an incident occur during a motorsport event,” said Patrick Morgan, Managing Director based Dawn Treader Performance. “That is why we are so pleased to be able to contribute to their much-needed funds.
Tracy Grunwell Head of Fundraising at The Air Ambulance Service said "It's fantastic to see Patrick and his team getting involved and helping to raise donations for this incredibly worthy cause. The Air Ambulance is a vital service in this area and Sywell are doing a fantastic job to help us keep the Air Ambulance flying. The support that we receive makes a huge difference, not just to us but to the lives of the people we save."
About 150 people took part in a conducted tour of the collection, which includes Ayrton Senna’s 98T Formula 1 Lotus from 1986, Jacques Villeneuve’s 1996 Formula 1 Williams FW 18 and other historic cars covering more than 50 years of motorsport in Europe and the USA.
“The AA Grand Tour is an annual event that is part of the Silverstone Classic, which is the world’s biggest classic racing festival. This year more than 100 cars took part in the visit to Sywell, which was one of the main highlights on the route,” said Dermot Bambridge, organiser of the Tour. “The participants were amazed at Patrick’s array of vehicles and I am delighted that we managed to help raise money for the air ambulance.”

Lotus 98T First Fire-up. After a 3 year hiatus the 1000+BHP Renault EF15 fitted to the Lotus 98T finally burst into life. The first fire-up went very smoothly with the engine starting first time and no leaks. We will be shaking the car down soon in preparation for the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Carlos Checa's 1198 F11 at Sywell
With summer (hopefully) now coming around we pushed Carlos Checa's 2011 World Superbike Championship winning 1198 out for a few photos. This bike has recently arrived with us and we are very much looking forward to having it running soon.
The 1198 F11 at Sywell.
Although it closely resembles the 1198 road bike the F11 is bristling with technology and probably represents the pinnacle of World Superbikes - it is the last factory Ducati produced. From 2012 the 1198 lost its "F" designation to become an RS before finally being retired in favor of this years 1199.

John Evans 1953-2013
As people go, once in a while you meet an individual who is larger than life to the point that it seems impossible that they cannot still be living. I have been fortunate to know such a man. Small in stature but enormous in heart to the point that he drew a smile from probably thousands of people over his 60 years. John was our ever present photographer, historian and above all, friend. I first met John in the mid 1990s. As a child I had observed strange 3-wheeled tubular devices mounted above a long wheelbase Landrover on the way to school each day but had no idea what such a contraption might be used for. I quickly learned that what I had been seeing as a sprog, was a racing vehicle of a unique construction. John quickly took me, as a very awkward teenager, under his wing and introduced me to the sport of husky racing. John had first encountered huskies on a train in the hands of the first breeder of the type in the UK. This was in the 1970s and John and former wife Penny quickly fell in love with the sleek, good-natured dogs. For young, slightly lost soles such as myself, to be taken in by the Evans's, for them to allow us to run their dogs and to enjoy something completely different, was wonderful. And they did let so many people into their lives – it was astonishing how generous they were towards others. Every Saturday they were not racing they hosted a curry night in the Old Post House – every Saturday. It was a magic time. I can vividly recall Lynn and her friend Natasha walking into the Lamport Swan for the first time. I can’t recall the year, 2001 or 2002. Lynn was a somewhat exotic addition to a usual night out. She was attractive, Australian and spoke her mind, which is a rare attribute these days. The following morning John rang me (a very unusual occurrence) to tell me that “we defiantly broke the ice”. To this day I’m not 100% sure I know what that meant, nor do I wish to know! John and Lynn were married in 2004. It was a most memorable day. John and I had to change clothes three times after making the inadvisable decision to drive to the venue in a 1920s open top sports car in heavy rain. I’m sure we are not the first or last bride groom and best man to attended a ceremony having run out of underwear but that’s how it went… Lynn brought out the best in John, of that I am sure. They traveled extensively and, in a rare break from general worldwide tradition, brought back photographs of their exploits that were actually interesting and in most cases funny – that kind of summed them both up. I am so happy for my friend that he found someone so capable, funny and worth of one's highest respect to live out the rest of his days with. It’s easy to bestow accolades on widows or widowers but Lynn is a truly remarkable woman and plays down her role in life to such a degree that she has earned a respect among her friends that I am sure she does not realize. John was my friend and ever will be. Patrick
