fightthesilenceorganization Well, I'll try to keep it as simple and short as possible but there's quite a bit that has happened to me in the last few years, but j want you to know that even through all of the shit you're about to read, I never had my head down and never went without a smile. My name is darren and I'm 24 from new jersey, however my story begins at 19.. I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in July 2010. Immediately began heavy duty chemo and luckily was in remission within just a few months; however once you're in remission you're not done with treatment. For the next couple years I was on regular chemotherapy, radiation, steroids and every other shitty medicine I can think of to help battle this disease and keep it away, and it worked for quite a while. I started going back to school in the spring semester of 2013, after all the stuff I went through I decided to try my hand at nursing. I took the basic classes and began the journey. In my anatomy class I met a girl, and we immediately clicked and eventually started dating. The day after we became 'official' I got a call saying my cancer was back and that I needed to resume treatment.. I was devastated and had to immediately quit school and quit my 2 jobs. I began the normal chemo rounds but it wasn't working. They tried amping it up a little, and nothing. They tried some heavy-duty chemo to try and knock it out enough to get me into transplant and nothing.. I was beginning to lose hope when my doctors told me I qualified for a study called Cart-19 which essentially is a revolutionary way for patients who have relapsed to get into remission. I was the 16th person to ever try this procedure and holy hell it nearly killed me.. for 2 weeks I was in a medically induced coma and almost lost my life with a 108* fever and lack of oxygen flowing through my body. However, the therapy worked and I got into remission very quickly and got home one day before my birthday. The doctors recommended I start getting ready for transplant but I wanted to just take a break and relax for a while, which they understood. I spent that time with my girlfriend and having an awesome time and just being with her meant the world to me. Around Christmas my doctors told me that the cart-19 cells that helped me get into remission were no longer being detected, so they pushed to get me into transplant and I agreed. Getting ready for transplant wasn't hard, it's just the mental anguish it puts on you that's difficult. Eventually the day came when I got into the hospital and began transplant. I was in the hospital for a month when I realized my girlfriend was cheating on me with another guy and didn't give a shit about how I was doing, so she dropped out of my life (and thank god.. the reason I don't mention her is because she is a lazy stoner who won't go anywhere in life - unfortunately it took me far too long to realize it) So with no girlfriend and no more cancer I began the recovery process from the transplant. In a few months i was in remission and still am!! I've had quite a few side effects that resulted in hospital visits but nothing too bad. I've met some amazing people on tumblr and have made some good friends and I smile every day because I know that I am healthier, happier, and more motivated to get back to work and school more than ever before. Nobody will slow me down, and I can't wait to show myself what I'm made of.
