TITO & TARANTULA - After Dark
The Cruzados (formerly The Plugz) were a great band. But they couldn't be categorized well enough to suit marketing- were the Los Lobos Tejano-rock? We're the underground punk? Were they LA craftsmen? Were they surf/skate? The answer was "Yes!" I think they lasted only two albums. Years later Tito Larriva and bitchin' drummer Charlie (Chalo) Quintana got together and crafted this. One of the greatest songs in one of the greatest scenes in one of the greatest movies. Enjoy!

The argument exist- which Small Faces vocalist do you prefer (Marriott, of course). But this song finds a truce in allowing the two battling personalities to share the vocals. Bassist Lane starts off and Mod King Marriott picks up. Then the decent into what The Small Faces do best.
I fucking love youtube. But as odd as this world is, my favorite clip is this audio snip from 9pm on a Friday night in June 1967 As live DJ radio (remember them?) Dave Diamond at KBLA in Los Angeles takes us to his Diamond Mine!
Remember, Wednesday night is Fashion Night at Gazzarri’s. Cash prizes for the best Mod and Psychedelic outfits!
Gazzarri’s was nightclub that was part of the LA scene along with The Roxy, The Whiskey and The Troubadour. The famous Gazzarri Dancers were the featured Go-Go dancers on many of the variety and music shows.
Most of all, this clip features Arthur Lee and Love on the radio!
Reposting. I can’t help myself, I love this clip
The flour white Partridge's lose their way and a pre-sleekend Lou Gossett and budding brilliant Richard Pryor help Keith find his urban groove- with an assist from the local chapter of sanitized TV Black Panthers. I also just finished watching a great documentary on the LA session musicians "The a Wrecking Crew" - that bus may have said Partridge Family, but I can tell a Tommy Tedesco/Hal Blaine arrangement from a mile away.
1967 UK Between The Buttons Mono Vinyl LP
A few different stories exist about Brian’s actual musical contributions to this album, but even if he was just an irritant by this point, his influence is there. As writers/composers, Mick & Keith were leaving their comfort zone and, if you’re fortunate enough to hear the album in mono- Watts settles any argument about his value on the drums. He’s incredible on this record. This track and the Bo Diddy riffing “Please Go Home” were pulled from the U.S. release of this album. So much is made about their competition with the Beatles, but I always found this album showing how the Stones were influenced by The Kinks.
“Where Were You?” - The Mekons (1978)
An epic early Mekons post punk song and a fucking majestic intro with the drums gradually building up suspense, making you feel like your speakers are about to explode:
“…the song is romantic with a desperate, pleading quality that makes you feel both leery of, and sorry for, the speaker. It starts off accusatory, leading you to believe that the speaker has been stood up:
‘When I was waiting in the bar Where were you? When I was buying you a drink Where were you? When I was trying to hide in bed Where were you?‘
This introduction draws some immediate sympathy for the speaker. He went so far as to buy her a drink, even though she wasn’t there, and when he eventually comes to realize he’s been stood up he goes home to cry, a sad picture by most standards.
It’s emotional, vulnerable, and somewhat pathetic, but when the second verse starts, the sadness and pathos turns to suspicion as the speaker reveals his darker side:
‘When I wave to you from a distance Do you see me? You were standing in a queue Do you see me? You had yellow hair Do you see me?‘
It’s up to the listener to decide whether the speaker now sounds more like a stalker than a disappointed lover…
…When the third verse hits, we’re taken to new levels of delusion, neediness and dejection:
‘I wanna talk to you all night Do you like me? I wanna find out about your life Do you like me? Could you ever be my wife Do you like me?‘
…These last lines are sweet, naïve, and devastating as the speaker has brought himself to a new level of delusion while the listener has figured out that this is not the story of star crossed lovers; it’s a one sided obsession…”

We all interpret great art differently. I’ve described this track as “if the movie Taxi Driver were a song, this would be that song.” I think it’s a long, slow build of psychosis- with an episode in the making. It’s a beautiful brilliant song by an incredibly under-valued band and one of the best live acts I’ve seen.

Favorite moment of a great movie. I wish John Carpenter were god instead.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours! We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum. No soldier's paid to kick against his powers. We laughed, knowing that better men would come, And greater wars; when each proud fighter brags He wars on Death - for lives; not men - for flags.
-Wilfred Owen "The Next War"
