Part III > Part IV
You wondered when this converation will lead you.
"Yeah... yes, of course. But here? Isn't it too loud?" you asked.
"We can just... go outside? Go for a walk or something?" Steve suggested while you were still shocked that you weren't already screaming at each other and arguing. You stood up and went to the front door, Steve following. You walked a few meters next to Steve in complete silence.
"Sooo... what do you want to talk about?" you said nervous.
"You know, I talked with Nancy today. Not gonna lie, if it wasn't for her I wouldn't have balls to do it but she said that you will be happy about it or something... I guess I just wanted to say that I'm sorry..." Steve explained as you stared at him in desbelief. You wouldn't be surprised if your mouth was actually opened because of the shock. Steve saw your reaction and continued "Whoa, ok, don't act like it's so unbelievable. I mean it, I know I acted like a dumbass for past few months..."
"Years" you interrupted with a fake cough and laughed
"Don't be a bitch" he joked. "But you're right. Years. It sad, you know?... How I just pretended you didn't exist so I could have more friends that weren't even real friends. I don't know why I even thought about it that way. So yeah I'm so so so sorry" Steve said and waited for your answer. "Can we go back to what we had before high school? To that friendship?"
You were totally sure that it was some kind of weird dream, so you had to think a little bit before answering. The few drink you already had weren't really helping in that situation. But while staring at him you noticed something shiny on his neck.
"Is it... is it our chain?" you asked pointing at the jewelry.
"Oh, this? Yeah, this is exactly that one" Steve said. After all this years he still had it. You gave each other chains around 5th year. It was like "best friend" bracelets but you both decided that the chain is more practical. They weren't anything big, just a little shiny necklace. You were wearing it non stop but weren't expecting Steve to do that too.
"I see that you also wear it... that's like... really cool. But what's your answer to my question?"
"Honestly... I don't think so" you saw Steve's face drop. "At least not now, it's what I meant. Listen, I'm glad that you apologized, I really am. And I appreciate that. But you can't just "go back" after so much time. And we both changed a lot so it might be a problem. However... I think... that we can start again?" you said with a smile.
"Ok, so- I'm Steve. Steve Harrington" he introduced himself jokingly.
"Y/n Hopper. Nice to meet you, Steve." you shook your hands as if you really met for the first time and started to walk back to the house.
As you went through the door, you saw Nancy stumbling to the table with alcohol to pour herself another drink.
"I think you should stop her" you said looking at Steve.
"Yup, on it" he said almost running to his girlfriend.
He told her that she's had enough but she didn't listen. Steve tried to take away her cup. Nancy was too stuborn to just give it to him. They started scrambling for the drink and seconds later the punch was all over her white sweater. Nancy ran to the bathroom and Steve followed her. You knew that you were no help in that situation so you stayed. While looking around the room, you found Jonathan. Finally.
"You came! I thought I won't see you there today!" you shouted because you wanted to make sure he heard you over the loud music.
"Yeah, I drove Will so he could meet with the boys and came here. What exactly happened between them?" Jonathan asked pointing at the direction where Nancy and Steve were just seconds ago. You explained the whole situation.
"Oh, that's not going to end well, is it?"
"To be honest, I don't think so. Nancy really had too much for one night."
You talked and joked around for a while, when you saw Steve storming out of the bathroom. He was upset.
"Please, take care of her" he said while passing Jonathan. The boy looked at you and told you that he is going to help Nancy. You nodded and ran after Steve.
"Hey! What's up? What happened?" you asked as you catched up to Steve before he entered his car.
"I... She... nothing happened, Y/n" he said clearly sad.
"Are you sure? We can talk about it if you want-"
"I said it's nothing! Don't think you can magicaly fix everything now!" And then Steve started his car and drove away. Yup, that hurt. Guess the apologies weren't as important to him as they were to you. Good to know.
As soon as Steve left, Jonathan and Nancy came out of the house. Jonathan made sure that she was safe in the passengers sit. He noticed you standing in the driveway.
"Y/n, listen, I'll give her a ride home and I'll pick you up, ok? Just give me like... I don't know half an hour?" Jonathan offered and you thanked him. You could just go with these two already but a lot was happening so you weren't thinking straight. It was nice knowing that someone cared about you.
You didn't want to enter the house again so you sat on the curb. Even though it was getting a litlle colder, the fresh air was definitely better than the hot one inside. You were wondering what Nancy had to say to make Steve so miserable. It wasn't anything lovely, that's for sure. Your thoughts were interupped by the sound of footsteps. Someone sat next to you. You turned your head torwards this person and you saw the same guy from the begging of the party. He looked at you and took a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket inside of the leather jacket.
"Do you want one?" he asked politely.
"No, thanks. I don't smoke." you declined.
"Well, I believe I've never introduced myself before. I'm Billy Hargrove. Nice to meet you"
"Y/n. Hopper. Nice to meet you too." you said shyly.
"So, what are you doing here alone? Aren't you cold?" Billy asked.
"A little bit. I'm waiting for a friend to get me out of here. He's supposed to pick me up soon."
"Here, have this" he said as he put his jacket over your shoulders. He had nothing on under it so you cought yourself staring at his muscles a little. "You're waiting for Byers, right? I see that there will be a lot of drama soon... Him taking Harrington's girl home... won't end good if you ask me" Billy said while inhaling the smoke of his cigarette.
"I'm sure he just gave her a ride to her home, nothing else. And yeah, I must agree with the 'drama' part, but don't use future tense. The problems already started" you explained and laughed. "You know a lot of names for someone who just started school here, Hargrove"
"Many people talk about you and your little group. It's actually impossible not to know your names." he said and his eyes widened like he just got an idea. "Listen, if you want to get out of here, maybe I can walk you home. What do you think?"
"I'd really love to, but Jonathan already said that he will come and I don't want him to waste his time like that. Besides, my dad will go crazy if he saw me go home this late next to a half naked stranger. Maybe some other time." you answered. A part of you wanted to agree but the other part was too scared. You barely knew him.
"Oh, your dad. The police chief. Understandable. Not the best circumstances... How about... we go to the cinema on friday? Or dinner?" Billy offered.
"Or both" you said.
"Or both! And then I can walk or drive you home. Not as a stranger anymore"
"That's sounds like a plan" the moment these word left your mouth, Jonathan's car appeared. You wanted to give Billy his jacket.
"Oh, no! Take it with you! See you soon!" he exclaimed as he watched you leave. You waved at him.
"Really? Hargrove?" Jonathan asked totally shocked as you entered the car.
"Yeah, is there any problem?"
"No, not at all. He just looks like a troublemaker. Be careful around him" Jonathan said worried.
"Don't worry, I will. I have that on me, remember? I can take care of myself" you said as you showed Jonathan a can of pepper spray you had in your bag.
"Oh, yeah, definitely a Hopper" you both laughed and he drove away.
