Robby wasn't hard to train.
Jack Abbott has come to realize that there are two types of brats, those who crave punishment and those who need it. Robby is definitely the latter.
The first time Jack saw Robby he knew he was a person worth knowing, for different reasons. Robby was smart, capable and a hell of a good doctor, the best one he has seen in a while. It helps that he wasn't hard on the eyes either, but God, that man was a fucking menace.
They barely have an age difference, but the way Robby behaved on the floor when they first met would make any person believe that man was just out of med school. If he had a good day, he would make sure everybody was having one too, but if he had a bad one, he sure as hell would make sure everybody else's was much, much worse.
The correction of the bad behavior didn't start severe, of course. Every time Robby screamed at a med student, was hasty with a nurse or a patient's family, Jack would come up behind him and squeeze his shoulder. It was definitely harsher than necessary, and in a spot he knew bothered Robby enough to feel it, but not to loudly complain. In a low tone near his ear Jack would just say, "Calm down, Michael." When the opposite happened, when Robby was kind and understanding, the shoulder squeeze would be replaced by a firm hand on the back of the neck and a "good job, sweetheart," Jack's thumb going across in circles in a particular spot that he knew made his breath hitch.
(If years later he sees Robby putting a firm hand on the back of his new intern's neck, he doesn't comment.)
Quickly, things began to escalate. The touches weren't enough anymore and Robby's behavior was getting out of control. Jack did notice the pattern he was showing. If Jack didn't give out the praise freely, he would overcompensate to try to get it. If Jack didn't correct a small mistake, he would escalate the error to a point Abbott just couldn't ignore it anymore. Jack finally understood that Robby's need for approval went deeper than he realized.

There were twenty strikes with the belt for the twenty times he had ignored a direction that shift. He could describe in detail how every inch of Robby's ass was covered in markings, how the blood dripped on the floor of his bedroom and how Robby's cock was hard as a rock pressing against his white sheets. The poor man was so out of it he lost count twice and had to start over, so twenty hits was actually closer to forty. He remembers the look on Robby's face after they were finished.

For Robby, the punishments were never just about the pain, it was the only time the world actually went quiet. No one needed him at that moment, he wasn't a doctor, he wasn't an attending. When Jack’s focus was on him, on the hits, on his counting, the rest of the world ceased to exist. He craved the heavy, undivided attention that came with a correction. In those moments, he didn't have to lead or decide, he just had to take it.
When Jack was finished there was no defiance left, no witty comeback, no "menace."
Jack knew then that this wouldn't be a one time correction. It was the start of a long, dark, and perfectly balanced system. He would provide the boundaries, and Robby would finally have the freedom to just be a good doctor, knowing that if he ever felt himself slipping, Jack would be there to catch him, belt in hand, and bring him back to earth.
