fascinated by yamamoto hideo's awful irredeemable no good protagonists. he makes them so normal-passing its easy to overlook how evil they are for the first 200 pages and assume if we only knew more about their past it would put their actions in context only to discover no. they're just horrible people. they enjoy killing or hurting people and can spin it in their own heads as somehow "helping" or "fixing" or "retribution." if you met them on the street or in a convenience store you'd have no idea they're evil bastards b/c real evil bastards don't wear a sign around their neck. you might be taken in by their crocodile tears or surface level charm. yamamoto encourages his readers to sympathise with his characters before learning how irredeemable they are, so you start to question the face of every stranger you meet and wonder if its not a mask designed to lure you in and make you lower your guard. if their distress is not an empty performance. if their offer to help isn't a barbed threat. he plays with a very subtle but human fear: you can never be entirely certain whats in another person's heart.
