Women of color have months to go before they reach symbolic parity.
great reminder of the important intersections between race and class, and how we normalize whiteness and make the intersections for women of color invisible. (thanks to @ggarlandsociology, a soon-to-be-former student, for initially exposing me to this great article!)

Why Wonât Washington Take On Wall Streetâs Biggest Crimes?
Yesterday, the judge in the SAC case accepted the firmâs plea deal with the Justice Department, in which the firm and its subsidiaries pled guilty to wire fraud and securities fraud and agreed to pay a $900 million penalty and $300 million in disgorged profits. The Southern District hailed the deal as the crowning victory in their multi-year campaign against insider trading, which notably has resulted in more than 70 convictions and exactly zero acquittals. Congratulations.
But what many of us want to know is: why, immediately after the most severe financial crisis in more than seventy years, which resulted in the loss of almost nine million jobs, did the Justice Department choose to train its heavy artillery on insider traders? Sure, insider trading is bad. Itâs very rich people cheating to make themselves extravagantly rich. It should be illegal, and people should go to jail for it. But itâs far from the biggest thing wrong with our financial markets and institutions.

The obsession with edible gold is taking the luxury cuisine world by storm, as flavorless, odorless, nontoxic, edible gold is used as a garnish for desserts, cocktails and even main courses such as hamburgers and sushi
Gah! Edible GOLD? What a perfect example of Veblenâs conspicuous consumption.
[S]sociology is an uncomfortable trade. It speaks of matters that established powers would prefer to leave in decent silence: poverty, violence, and exploitation. It speaks in tones that can offend, about power, privilege, and the possibilities of change. Its formulation of problems rests on notions of the collective that are out of step with the ruling ideology of individualism. Sociology constantly concerns questions of the public interest, and rasps against the sensibilities of the privileged social groups to which most professional sociologists themselves belong.

When people consider engaging with facts and information any number of factors come into play. How interested are they in the subject? How much do they trust the sources of information that relate to the subject? How eager are they to learn something more? What other aspects of their lives might be competing for their attention and their ability to pursue information? How much access do they have to the information in the first place?
A new Pew Research Center survey explores these five broad dimensions of peopleâs engagement with information and finds that a couple of elements particularly stand out when it comes to their enthusiasm: their level of trust in information sources and their interest in learning, particularly about digital skills.
Hazel Scott playing two pianos at the same damn time with ease
Hazel Scott was a musical sorcerer and a civil rights hero. Â She:
was admitted to Julliard at 8. Â
was performing in top venues by 16. Â
pioneered âswinging the classicsâ and made the equivalent of a million dollars a year doing it. Â
was the first person of color to have their own national TV show. Â
went to Hollywood but refused to be cast as a âsinging maid.â  Demanded and got control over her casting, her wardrobe, and how footage featuring her was cut. Â
refused to perform in segregated venues and led charges for integration in several northern cities, notably Spokane. Â
She was brought down by the House Committee on Unamerican Activities, and has been largely forgotten. Â But she was a sorcerer, and a hero. Â
@theladyragnell
Letâs un-forget her.
What a brave and amazing woman!
