໒꒱﹒     he  lets  her  continue,  and  doesn't  even  interrupt  once  which  is  borderline  heroic  for  him.  but  you  can  see  it  in  the  way  his  mouth  keeps  twitching,  like  he's  trying  not  to  grin  the  entire  time.  by  the  end  of  it,  he  slowly  exhales  through  his  nose,  like  he's  actually  taking  her  words  into  consideration  even  if  he  absolutely  isn't.  his  gaze  drifts  briefly  toward  milo,  softening  for  half  a  second  at  the  sound  of  his  laugh,  before  sliding  right  back  to  her.  "  wow,  "  he  echoes  lightly,  his  head  tilting,  tone  way  too  calm  for  someone  who  just  got  verbally  dragged.  "  a  whole  speech,  and  I  didn't  even  have  to  pay  admission  too.  "  his  fingers  roll  the  ball  once  against  his  palm  before  he  points  it  vaguely  in  her  direction.  "  first  of  all,  since  we're  doing  lists  now  …  you  don't  even  get  to  call  it  community  service  when  you  were  like  two  seconds  away  from  committing  a  felony  over  a  bluetooth  speaker,  "  he  counters,  brows  lifting,  the  corner  of  his  mouth  pulling  just  enough  to  give  him  away.  "  that's  not  civic  duty.  that's  poor  impulse  control  with  far  to  much  confidence."  he  shifts  his  weight,  shoulder  angling  toward  her  now,  mirroring  her  without  really  thinking  about  it.  "  and  ambushed  an  empty  seat  ?  "  a  quiet  huff  of  a  laugh  slipping  through.  "  that's  called  efficiency.  besides,  you  hesitated.  milo  and  I  didn't  …  that  was  kinda  the  whole  point  of  the  game.  a  win's  a  win.  "  he  shrugs,  slightly.  still,  her  comment  about  charm  earns  a  brief  pause  before  his  eyes  flick  back  to  her,  a  bit  sharper  now,  but  a  little  more  amused.  "  and  yet,  "  he  says,  voice  lowering  just  slightly,  "  you're  still  here.  so  whatever  i'm  doing  ?  must  be  working  a  little, "  the  smirk  shows  up  then.  "  also,  we  should  probably  clear  something  up,  "  he  adds,  "  I  wasn't  a  passenger  princess  …  I  was  held  hostage  in  a  vehicle  with  no  say  in  the  music  and  a  driver  who  thought  yellow  lights  were  optional.  "  his  gaze  narrows  just  a  bit,  though  it's  all  play,  "  very  different  experience.  “  he  steps  in  that  same  inch  she  did  earlier,  closing  the  space  right  back,  voice  dropping  to  match  hers  without  missing  a  second.  "  and  for  the  record  ?  if  you  are  the  highlight  of  my  afternoon  …  "  a  pause,  just  long  enough  to  let  it  sit,  his  gaze  steady  on  hers,  "  I  think  i'm  doing  just  fine  on  hobbies.  "  another  second  passes,  then  the  grin  becomes a  little  wider.  "  but  hey,  "  he  says  coolly,  glancing  briefly  toward  milo  again  before  looking  back  at  her,  "  keep  going.  I  wanna  see  if  you've  got  a  sixth  stage  of  grief  in  there  somewhere.  "

the   fact   that   she’s   not   interrupting   him,    despite   every   muscle   in   her   body   telling   her   to,    is   the   most   generous   thing   she’s   done   all   day,    even   if   the   look   on   her   face   says   absolutely   everything   and   this   is   the   first   time   she   would   be   considered   an   open   book.    by   the   time   he’s   finished,    she   lets   out   a   soft   and   slow   exhale.    “   hmm,   ”    she   hums,    her   eyes   are   dragging   through   him   like   she’s   deciding   if   he’s   worth   the   effort.    “   that   was   cute.    you’ve   been   waiting   to   say   some   of   that,    haven’t   you   ?   ”    her   eyes   narrow,    but   her   lips   turn   into   something   that   would   remind   a   smirk.    zoya’s   eyebrows   lift   up   and   the   way   she   looks   at   him,    she’s   clearly   about   to   dismantle   everything   he   just   said   piece   by   piece.    “   if   i   wanted   to   commit   a   felony,    i   would’ve.    it’s   called   restraint.    self   control   if   you   wish.    you   should   look   into   it   sometime,   ”    a   beat.    “   plus,    at   least   i   was   going   to   solve   the   problem,   ”    her   weight   shifts,    she’s   mirroring   him   without   even   realizing.    “   please,    you   didn’t   win   anything.    you   exploited   a   moment   of   hesitation   and   now   you’re   acting   like   you   earned   it,   ”    the   brunette   scoffs   lightly,    now   looking   at   him   with   a   very   dramatic,    almost   pitying   look.    “   it’s   very   …   on   brand   for   you,   ”    her   expression   flicks   for   a   fraction   of   a   second   at   his   next   moment,    very   quick   and   subtle   before   it   sharpens   into   something   more   intentional.    “   milo   clearly   has   poor   taste   in   allies   too,   ”    she   glances   at   her   son   with   the   corner   of   her   eye   before   her   attention   is   brought   back   to   miles,    her   expression   sharpening,    almost   like   it’s   happening   every   time   he   speaks.    “   i   stay   where   i’m   entertained,   ”    she   adds,    tone   almost   lazy.    “   right   now   you’re   …   tolerable,   ”    her   gaze   flicks   down   to   the   ball   in   his   hand   and   just   as   soon   it   flicks   back   up,    unimpressed.    “   you   got   in   willingly,    you   stayed   willingly   and   you   didn’t   complain   nearly   as   much   as   you   are   now   …   you   basically   got   chauffeured   around   in   air   conditioning   with   excellent   music   after   very   clearly   not   fighting   for   aux   rights,    so   if   that’s   your   idea   of   being   held   hostage,    you   live   a   very   privileged   life,    miles,   ”    and   as   she’s   done   speaking,    she   looks   him   up   and   down,    leaning   in   just   a   fraction   as   he   steps   closer,    refusing   to   back   off.    “   which   tracks,   ”    a   small   pause,    but   her   eyes   immediately   narrow   at   his   next   words.    “   i’m   already   there,   ”    her   voice   drops   quieter,    edged   with   amusement   and   confidence.    “   it’s   acceptance   and   i’ve   accepted   that   you’re   going   to   keep   trying   to   win   arguments   you   already   lost,   ”

her   green   hues   are   watching   fatin   as   she   speaks,    giving   her   the   kind   of   attention   that   is   usually   hard   to   get   from   zoya    -    a   hint   of   intrigue   behind   it   too.    there’s   a   flicker   of   recognition,    a   form   of   understanding   on   her   face,    but   it   disappears   just   as   quickly,    always   unable   to   let   anyone   else   know   her   thoughts.    “   mm,    don’t   sound   so   disappointed   about   it,   ”    she   hums,    lips   curve   into   a   soft   smile   as   her   elbow   leans   against   the   bar,    glass   turning   in   between   her   fingers.    “   c’mon,    you   always   liked   a   little   bit   of   chaos,   ”    her   tone   is   lighter   and   she   lets   her   brain   wander   off   for   two   seconds   to   how   it   used   to   be,    to   the   fatin   she   knew   back   in   the   day,    to   the   thought   that   maybe   this   could   be   a   complete   stranger   sitting   next   to   her   now.    “   which,    for   what   it’s   worth,    was   never   your   worst   quality   …   so   i   don’t   think   i’d   buy   it,   ”    a   beat.    her   eyes   linger   over   the   other   for   just   a   second   longer   and   she   gets   to   catch   the   shift   in   her   eyes.    “   i   mean,    if   you’d   be   suddenly   well   adjusted   and   making   good   decisions   …   i’d   be   concerned,   ”

jesse huffs a quiet laugh through his nose , " wow " he mutters , " didn't realise i struck a nerve that deep . should i lower my voice ? dim the lights ? make this a safe space for you to open up ? " the male shifts in his seat , stretching his legs out lazily , demeanor telling of his disinterest in the conversation he'd somehow gotten himself into it with his loud mouth . " relax , speed racer . i didn't say you were trying to prove something " a beat , " i said it looks like you are . there's a difference — subtle , i know . " he grins — lazy , cocky .

green   hues   are   analyzing   him   like   she’s   trying   to   decide   whether   he’s   worth   the   effort   of   engaging.    she   lets   the   silence   linger   for   a   little   longer,    her   choice   to   not   answer   right   away   is   definitely   intentional.    finally,    she   lets   out   a   soft,    unimpressed   exhale   as   her   head   tilts,    eyes   narrowing.    “   please,    go   ahead,   ”    her   hand   gestures   lazily   towards   him.    “   dim   the   lights,    make   it   intimate   and   maybe   then   your   personality   will   finally   feel   like   less   of   a   public   inconvenience,   ”    a   soft   shrug.    the   brunette   shifts   in   her   seat,    mirroring   his   laziness   but   it’s   with   far   more   control,    eyes   locked   on   his   almost   like   she’s   being   challenged.    “   it’s   cute,    but   don’t   worry.    my   nerves   are   fine,    you’d   have   to   say   something   remotely   intelligent   to   hit   one,   ”    her   eyebrow   lifts   as   he   continues   to   speak,    slowly,    almost   like   she’s   taking   her   time   with   it.    “   subtlety   isn’t   your   thing,    i   get   it   …   but   if   you’re   going   to   analyze   someone,    at   least   try   to   be   right   so   it’s   not   embarrassing,   ”

she’s   crouched   by   the   tire   with   her   sleeves   pushed   up,    tools   in   her   hands   and   her   movements   quick   and   steady,    like   she’s   done   this   a   hundred   times    -    and   she   did.    she   doesn’t   let   herself   get   distracted   from   work,    not   even   when   she   hears   his   voice.    “   mm,    i   charge   extra   for   educational   services,    especially   when   it’s   grown   men   who   think   a   jack   is   optional,   ”    she   hums,    tightening   something   with   a   sharp   twist.    finally,    she   takes   a   quick   glance   up   at   travis.    “   seriously,    you   should   be   giving   me   names   of   whoever   left   the   truck   like   this.    just   so   i   can   have   a   conversation,   ”    the   brunette   shrugs   and   there’s   a   smirk   tugging   at   her   lips.    “   i’m   okay.    busy,    fixing   problems   others   create   …   ”    she   dramatically   gestures   to   the   vehicle.    “   you   ?   ”

𐙚﹒  "  too  soft  for  me  ?  "  she  echoed,  the  words  thoughtful  but  edged  with  quiet  amusement.  for  a  moment  she  didn't  move,  simply  holding  the  dress  in  her  hand  before  placing  it  back  on  the  rack.  her  gaze  lingering  on  the  brunette  a  second  longer  than  necessary  now,  as  if  weighing  the  challenge  behind  the  comment  made.  "  that  sounds  suspiciously  like  a  dare,  "  tatum  added  calmly,  stepping  a  little  closer  so  the  space  between  them  felt  intentional.  the  dress  lifted  slightly  in  her  hand  as  she  tilted  her  head,  studying  her.  "  and  I  have  a  feeling  you  didn't  say  it  just  because  you  care  about  color  coordination,  "  she  continued,  curiosity  soft  in  her  tone.  a  moment  passed  as  her  fingers  idly  toying  with  the  edge  of  the  other's  shirt,  the  gesture  absentminded  but  deliberate,  her  expression  still  composed  —  though  warmer  now.  "  but  if  I  put  it  on,  "  she  finished  quietly,  "  are  you  planning  on  giving  me  your  honest  opinion  …  or  just  enjoying  the  view  ?  "

her   eyes   drop   to   where   tatum’s   fingers   toy   with   the   edge   of   her   shirt   and   her   expression   flickers,    almost   like   she’s   trying   to   stay   aware.    the   corners   of   her   mouth   lift   up   in   a   way   that   doesn’t   fully   give   her   away   and   her   eyebrow   lifts   slightly,    head   now   tilted.    “   a   dare   …   ”    she   repeats.    “   you   say   that   like   i   don’t   win   those,   ”    zoya   doesn’t   step   back   when   the   space   between   them   closes   and   if   anything,    she   leans   into   it   just   enough   to   make   it   clear   that   it’s   a   choice.    her   choice.    green   eyes   flicker   to   the   dress   in   the   other’s   hands   and   after   a   fraction   of   a   second   back   to   her,    but   it’s   slower,    more   intentional.    “   you’re   right,    though,   ”    she   continues,    the   tip   of   her   tongue   wetting   her   lips   before   she   speaks   again.    “   i   don’t   care   about   color   coordination   that   much,   ”    her   hand   lifts   only   to   hover   for   half   a   second   near   tatum’s   wrist   before   it   drops   again,    her   eyes   holding   the   other’s.    “   if   you   put   it   on   …   ”    she   adds,    her   voice   dipping   just   a   touch   lower.    “   you   will   get   my   honest   opinion,   ”    zoya   admits,    nodding   softly   and   she   takes   a   pause,    letting   the   words   sit   in   the   air   before   she   adds   again,    her   tone   softer,    teasing.    “   but   i   never   said   i   wouldn’t   enjoy   the   view   while   i’m   being   honest,   ”

When she finally noticed him, Derek didn’t move right away. Her comment pulled a quiet huff of amusement from him though, one corner of his mouth tugging upward as he pushed himself off the post. “New species, huh?” he echoed, voice calm, a little rough around the edges. “Was thinking more along the lines of small hurricane with a baseball bat.” His eyes flicked past her toward the cage where Milo had already launched himself back into action. The kid swung like his entire life depended on it. Derek watched a second longer than necessary. Then his gaze drifted back to her. His tongue pressed briefly against the inside of his cheek before he spoke again, quieter this time. “So,” he said, nodding once toward the cage, “i finally get to meet this mysterious kid you kept hiding from me." A smirk tugs over his features.

she   lets   the   silence   linger   between   them   for   longer   than   necessary.    it’s   not   because   she   doesn’t   know   what   to   say   -   she   always   does   and   always   has   something   to   say   -   but   instead,    she   prefers   to   watch   him   the   same   way   he   was   watching   her   and   milo   not   so   long   ago.    it’s   almost   like   she’s   trying   to   place   something   that   doesn’t   sit   right,    like   she’s   trying   to   figure   out   if   he   was   able   to   put   pieces   together.    her   tongue   presses   lightly   against   the   inside   of   her   cheek,    a   habit   she   picked   up   long   time   ago.    finally,    the   silence   breaks   when   zoya   lets   out   a   soft   huff   of   amusement.    “   now,   ”    head   shakes   to   the   sides,    her   arms   cross   loosely   across   her   chest,    like   she’s   trying   to   stay   grounded.    “   you   make   it   sound   like   i’ve   been   sneaking   him   around   in   a   trench   coat,   ”    her   gaze   flicks   towards   milo   just   in   time   to   catch   another   overcommitted   swing.    she   is   able   to   see   so   many   similarities   between   him   and   derek,    almost   like   they’re   the   exact   copy   of   each   other.    the   corner   of   her   mouth   twitches,    a   soft   smile   forms   despite   herself.    “   i   wasn’t   hiding   him,    you   just   weren’t   around   to   see   him,   ”    there’s   a   little   edge   to   her   voice   and   there’s   more   behind   those   words.    there’s   no   accusation,    the   words   land   softer   -   she   wouldn’t   be   able   to   accuse   him   of   anything,    he   never   knew.    but   in   some   way,    there’s   some   truth   in   it   too.    “   but,    now   you’ve   officially   made   it   to   the   main   event,   ”    she   teases   enough   to   smooth   over   the   truth   that   almost   surfaced.    she   hears   milo’s   laugh   cutting   through   the   noise   and   it   makes   her   gaze   flicker   back   to   him   instinctively,    her   face   softening   immediately.    “   he   does   bite,    though,    careful,   ”    she   adds,    hues   finding   derek’s   face   again.    her   head   tilts   slightly   and   she’s   really   studying   him,    like   she’s   trying   to   read   through   him.    “   so,    is   that   what   you   were   expecting   to   find   ?   ”

she   doesn’t   miss   the   way   his   voice   dips,    as   if   they   are   suddenly   making   a   negotiation   of   national   importance.    her   eyebrow   lifts   higher   and   even   if   her   face   expression   remains   unimpressed,    she’s   definitely   entertained.    zoya   hums.    “   right   …   you   strike   me   as   the   type   who   caves   under   pressure,    i   get   it,   ”    she   teases.    her   gaze   flicks   to   the   fans   moving   past   them   and   then   immediately   back   to   him,    like   he’s   the   only   part   of   this   interaction   she’s   bothering   to   engage   with.    “   if   you   start   handing   out   free   drinks,    that’s   a   you   problem.    i’m   just   encouraging   poor   decision   making,   ”    the   brunette   shrugs   as   if   she’s   stating   the   most   obvious   thing.

Vinny lets out a sharp exhale through his nose, like he’s trying to laugh it off but can’t quite commit. He slows his pacing, but doesn’t stop entirely—still restless, still wound too tight. One hand drags down his face before he fixes her with a look. “Yeah, yeah,” he mutters, voice rough. “You always got something to say. Big surprise.” He finally stops, planting his feet like he’s forcing himself to stay put, even if every part of him wants to keep moving. “And don’t act like you didn’t pick up ‘cause you were curious,” he shoots back, a faint edge of a smirk tugging at his mouth despite himself. “You love this. Me being a mess? That’s your favorite genre.” There’s a pause. Shorter this time. He looks away first, scratching the back of his neck, the attitude cracking just a little. “…it’s not—” he starts, then stops, exhales again. Quieter. “It’s not even that dramatic.” Another beat. He glances back at her, brows pulling together. “I just—” his hand gestures vaguely, like the words are somewhere in the air and he can’t quite grab them. “I screwed something up, alright? And I didn’t know who else to call who wouldn’t… I don’t know. Make it worse.” His gaze settles on her again, less defensive now, but still guarded. “So if you’re done enjoying the show,” he adds, a little softer, “you gonna help me out, or just keep narrating my downfall?”

the   brunette   watches   him   pace,    her   arms   folding   loosely   across   her   chest   and   her   head   tilts   slightly.    it’s   not   judgemental,    not   compassion   either;    she’s   just   taking   him   in.    zoya   lets   out   an   amused   huff,    eyebrows   raising   up.    “   don’t   give   me   that   much   credit,    your   downfall’s   been   ongoing.    i’m   not   narrating   anything,    i’d   need   a   bigger   budget   and   probably   a   stronger   drink   for   all   of   that,   ”    her   perfectly   manicured   finger   points   at   him,    slowly   dragging   down   in   the   air.    her   green   hues   drag   over   him,    a   dramatic   sigh   escapes   and   she   finally   pushes   herself   off   the   tree,    moving   closer   and   closing   the   distance   between   them.    “   yeah,   ”    she   starts,    shrugging.    “   i   did   pick   up   because   i   was   curious.    you   sounded   like   your   life   was   about   to   explode,    obviously   i   am   gonna   tune   in,   ”    her   eyes   stay   on   his,    gaze   carefully   studying   his   face,    sharp.    “   great,    you   screwed   something   up.    congratulations,    you’re   not   special,    princess,   ”    she   pauses,    but   the   crack   in   his   attitude   and   the   way   his   voice   drops   completely   shifts   her   energy.    her   tone   is   now   more   quiet,    grounded.    “   what   did   you   do   ?   ”    her   arms   finally   uncross,    one   hand   gesturing   towards   him   like   she’s   giving   him   the   floor,    green   orbs   focused   on   his   face.    “   if   i   wanted   to   make   it   worse,    you’d   already   know.    start   talking,   ”

madden watched milo’s small victory with quiet approval, the dramatic little celebration earning a faint smile she didn’t bother hiding. she remembered what is was like when she was just a kid, dreaming of the big time. “ah, the classic comeback story,” she said lightly. “retirement to professional return in under ten minutes. impressive turnaround.” “just think, somewhere out here there’s a grown man striking out against a pitching machine.” then she glanced back to zoya, the hint of a grin still there. “so, how have you been zoya?"

she’s   using   one   hand   to   shield   her   eyes   from   the   sun,    watching   milo’s   victory   laps   and   there’s   a   flicker   of   pride   there.    “   he’s   definitely   resilient,   ”    her   tone   is   dry,    but   the   corners   of   her   mouth   rising   up   definitely   give   her   away.    her   gaze   moves   back   to   madden,    an   amused   off   slips   out   of   her   lips   at   the   mention   of   a   pitching   machine.    “   honestly,    i’ve   seen   that   happen   and   i’m   not   saying   names,    but   it   was   deeply   humbling   for   everyone   involved,   ”    her   attention   sets   more   fully   on   madden,    her   expression   shifting,    something   a   little   more   grounded   in   her   beneath   her   usual   edge.    “   busy,   ”    a   perfect   answer   that   wouldn’t   give   away   too   much.    not   dismissive,    simplified.    “   work,    life,    him,   ”    she   nods   towards   milo,    who   is   now   very   seriously   preparing   for   his   next   swing.    a   shrug.    “   the   usual   chaos,    some   of   it   self   inflicted   purely   for   character   development,   ”    she   adds,    a   faint   smile   returning   to   her   lips.    “   what   about   you   ?   ”

AND AS SHE GIVES HER WARNING, the kick does become more of a shove, building at the back of her throat. it’s a pleasant burn, albeit not entirely what she had in mind when ordering them. ❛ no, you're right, we're going to be regretting this later. but see, it’s so worth it, ❜ she says around yet another bite, stifling a cough. it seems the heat from her previous bites doesn't take well to competition. ❛ the surprise adds to the fun, y’know? i just think they could use some rebranding. snack bites doesn’t do them justice. ❜ nothing that threatened to linger on their tongue for the next twenty-four hours had any business being called something so unassuming. she looked over at the other woman, brow crinkling in thought. ❛ how about holy shits? ❜

she   watches   how   her   face   expression   shift,    one   brow   arched   as   she’s   leaning   back   slightly,    a   smirk   forming   on   her   lips   very   much   being   too   obvious.    “   and   that’s   where   i   go   ahead   and   say   i   warned   you,   ”    she’s   not   even   trying   to   hide   the   satisfaction   as   the   cough   hits.    zoya   glances   down   at   the   food   again,    her   expression   getting   sharper   with   interest   at   the   mention   of   rebranding.    “   holy   shits   is   definitely   accurate   …   a   little   aggressive,    but   i   respect   it,   ”    a   pause.    she   takes   a   couple   of   seconds   to   gather   her   thoughts,    corners   of   her   mouth   lifting   up.    “   or   something   a   little   more   deceptive   …   like   friendly   bites,    it’d   give   people   false   sense   of   security,   ”

໒꒱﹒     he’s  enjoying  her  defense  far  more  than  he  probably  should.  the  grin  sitting  easy  on  his  face  as  she  finishes  listing  every  offense  against  her  dignity.  by  the  time  she's  done,  he  lets  out  a  quiet  breath  through  his  nose,  his  head  tilting  like  he's  giving  her  argument  the  kind  of  serious  consideration  it  absolutely  does  not  deserve.  clear  annoyance  plastered  on  hers,   though  he  doesn’t  seem  to  care.  "  first  of  all,  "  he  starts,  lifting  a  finger  in  playful  seriousness,  "  I  never  said  you  weren't  rational  about  it.  "  his  shoulders  rise  in  an  easy  shrug  as  his  gaze  drifts  past  her  toward  the  path  instead,  scanning  the  crowd  that's  still  buzzing  under  the  texas  heat  —  the  same  park  as  last  night,  just  louder  now  with  thousands  lingering  around  for  the  celebration.  "  i'm  just  saying  most  people  hear  a  bluetooth  speaker  and  keep  walking,  "  he  adds,  the  corner  of  his  mouth  lifting  as  he  tosses  the  ball  lightly  toward  milo  and  watches  the  kid  scramble  to  catch  it,  "  you  looked  at  that  guy  like  you  were  seriously  weighing  whether  the  charges  would  be  worth  it.  "  his  attention  stays  mostly  on  the  game  as  the  ball  comes  back  to  him,  rolling  once  against  his  palm  before  he  nods  toward  the  playground  where  milo  starts  darting  through  the  grass  again  like  he's  rounding  bases.  "  and  the  swings  thing,  "  he  continues,  tone  easy  as  the  grin  tugs  a  little  wider,  "  milo  and  I  secured  both  of  them  fair  and  square.  "  he  pauses  like  he's  genuinely  thinking  it  through,  eyes  flicking  briefly  across  the  park  before  settling  back  on  milo  instead  of  her.  "  what  exactly  was  the  expectation  there  —  that  I  would  take  one  look  at  you  and  give  up  my  spot  out  of  pity  ?  "  the  ball  lifts  from  his  hand  and  drops  back  into  his  palm  again.  "  do  the  gentlemanly  thing  ?  "  he  adds  thoughtfully,  a  quiet  breath  of  amusement  slipping  out.  "  because  i'm  pretty  sure  the  gentlemanly  thing  stopped  applying  the  second  you  made  me  a  passenger  prince  in  my  own  car,  "  revealing  where  his  grievances  may  have  laid.he  tosses  the  ball  again,  watching  milo  chase  it  down  before  continuing  like  the  conversation  is  just  another  part  of  the  rhythm  of  the  afternoon.  "  and  for  the  record,  "  he  adds  casually,  "  that  hot  dog  line  situation  was  not  an  emotional  breakdown.  it  was  a  rational  reaction  to  a  system  that  was  clearly  failing  the  public.  "  the  grin  pulls  a  little  wider  as  he  watches  milo  toss  the  ball  back.  "  besides,  "  he  says  lightly,  "  you  weren't  standing  there  like  a  loser.  "  the  correction  lands  with  the  same  soft  tease  as  before,  "  you  just  looked  like  someone  who  had  been  personally  betrayed  by  a  children's  playground.  "  a  quiet  breath  of  laughter  follows  as  he  glances  to  her.  "  which,  honestly,  "  he  adds,  with  a  hint  of  amusement,  "  it  might  have  been  the  highlight  of  my  afternoon.  "

it’s very generous and rare of her,  but she lets him finish  -  which honestly,  should be appreciated  -  her expression shifting with each word,  eventually settling into something between disbelief and deep offense,  arms crossed tight over chest as if she’s physically holding herself back from interrupting him every three seconds.  on top of that,  she keeps looking at him from underneath her lashes,  brown frowned.  “ wow, ”  she exhales slowly,  unimpressed,  her head tilting and she’s looking at him as if he just delivered a presentation that no one asked for … certainly not her.  “ you really love the sound of your own voice, ”  a loud,  dramatic sigh.  “ first of all, ”  she starts,  lifting a hand slightly as if she’s about to list things off her fingers  -  of course she is.  “ don’t rewrite history.  he was a public menace.  i was doing a community service by even considering intervention. ”  she ticks off one finger.  her gaze flicks towards milo chasing the ball,  a smile tugging at her lips,  letting her expression soften for a fracture of the second before it snaps right back in its place as she looks at miles again.  “ and you don’t get to stand there and act like you were above it, ”  her weight shifts and one shoulder is now angling towards him,  eyebrows raising as he continues speaking.  “ yeah,  you did not secure anything fair and square.  you ambushed an empty seat like opportunists.  it’s giving playground capitalism, ”  she’s being dramatic,  but there’s that soft familiar tease in her voice.  at least until he mentions the pity and that’s when she just keeps on going,  more a matter of a fact now than ever.  “ i expected … i don’t know,  a moment of self awareness ?  a flicker of charm ?  something that would justify why i still tolerate you,  maybe, ”  her arms drop and her one hand gestures towards him vaguely,  like she’s presenting a living and walking evidence.  “ but no.  instead,  i got you, ”  a pause.  “ … and i’m still waiting,  by the way, ”  she hears milo’s laughter cutting through again and it makes her glance over,  her face softening  -  it’s quite fascinating how he makes her shift so fast if you think about it  -  the same way miles does,  because he brings up the car and she immediately groans.  “ crybaby.  you were not a victim.  you were a privileged passenger.  i drove,  you’re welcome, ”  she bites,  that annoying smirk forming on her lips.  now she sees it through,  the reason that started it all,  and it flatters her in a way.  “ besides,  you loved being a passenger princess.  you were thriving.  i saw that, ”  she nods,  as if she decided it’s a fact now.  “ please … that was absolutely an emotional breakdown.  you went through all five stages of grief,  it almost made me worried, ”  zoya stills for a second as his comment lands,  eyes narrowing and she’s deciding if she’s about to be offended or amused.  as her head tilts,  she takes a step closer just enough to close the space,  her voice dropping a notch.  “ if that was the highlight of your afternoon,  you seriously need better hobbies, ”

He truly hadn't even realised he had paused for so long until a woman - he presumed the mother of the small boy battling with the bat near her - spoke directly to him. His eyes instantly flashed to her, a heat rising colour in the tops of his cheeks. It was clear she didn't recognise him so he was happy to engage. "Oh, I can't really comment.. I'm not exactly atheltically inclined myself." Sure, Cole worked out to keep in shape for his job but otherwise, he wouldn't be able to hit a baseball any better than the kid in front of them. "I know from experience through, if you try hard enough at something it does become easier. You might have yourself a World Series winner right there." Cole smiled genuine while gesturing to the boy.

there’s   a   soft   hum   that   escapes   her   lips   at   the   sound   of   his   words.    there’s   some   familiarity   to   him,    but   nothing   that   she   can   put   her   finger   on.    her   gaze   flicks   from   milo   and   back   to   him,    her   trimmed   brow   arching   up   in   a   way   that   looks   like   she’s   sizing   him   up   and   filing   away   all   at   once.    “   is   that   your   professional   opinion   as   a   non   athlete   or   are   you   just   freelancing   optimism   today   ?   ”    a   faint   curve   forms   on   her   lips,    very   familiar   to   her   persona.    zoya’s   weight   shifts,    one   hand   resting   on   her   hip   as   the   boy   takes   another   swing,    misses   spectacularly   once   again   and   follows   it   with   an   offended   look.    her   head   shakes   to   the   sides   and   she   lets   out   a   quiet   laugh   under   her   breath.    “   he   definitely   got   the   confidence   part   down,   ”    she   adds,    green   hues   focusing   on   the   little   version   of   her   once   again.    her   lips   softly   pout,    head   tilts   to   the   side.   “   skillset   …   very   much   in   development.    we’re   doing   the   whole   trust   the   process   thing,   ”    something   soft   slips   in   around   her   edges   as   she   continues   watching   him,    but   eventually   her   attention   gets   dragged   back   to   her   new   companion.    “   i   appreciate   the   vote   of   confidence,    but   i   feel   like   world   series   is   a   bit   ambitious,   ”    her   nose   scrunches,    tone   dipping   just   slightly,    more   genuine   now.

໒꒱﹒     he  let  out  a  low  laugh,  shaking  his  head  like  that  was  about  the  answer  he  should've  expected.  "  right,  "  he  says  coolly,  dragging  the  word  out  just  enough  to  tease,  his  gaze  flicking  over  her  with  easy  amusement,  "  good  to  know  you  appointed  yourself  director  of  public  dignity.  "  his  shoulders  lifted  in  a  lazy  shrug  before  he  tipped  his  chin  toward  the  crowd.  "  must  be  exhausting,  though,  carrying  this  whole  place  on  your  shoulders  while  the  rest  of  us  embarrass  ourselves  for  your  personal  enjoyment.  "

“   director   of   public   dignity   ?   ”    her   brows   lift   up,    she’s   more   amused   than   anything,    almost   as   if   he   just   handed   her   something   to   work   with.    “   god,    don’t   undersell   me.    i’d   say   executive   producer   at   least,   ”    her   tongue   clicks,    lips   curving   into   a   smirk.    “   but,    if   i   were   actually   in   charge,    you   would’ve   been   cut   from   the   lineup   ten   minutes   ago,   ”    her   tone   teaseful,    arms   raising   up   softly   in   a   shrug   as   if   she   said   the   most   obvious   thing.    “   but   go   on,    keep   going,   ”    she   nods,    her   chin   pointing   once   towards   him.    “   the   self   importance,    little   speeches   …   all   of   it   is   very   …   ”    a   pause,    she   takes   a   fraction   of   second   to   think.    “   character   work,   ”

“   wow,    i’m   honored,   ”    she   leans   back   in   her   chair,    the   sunglasses   getting   pushed   up   onto   the   top   of   her   head.    “   not   many   people   are   willing   to   suffer   through   heatstroke   just   to   see   me,   ”    a   soft   grin   forms   on   her   lips,    green   hues   observing   her   best   friend.    “   next   time   though,    feel   free   to   text   me   from   the   air   conditioning.    i’m   not   emotionally   attached   to   this   level   of   commitment,    i   can   definitely   be   open   to   changing   our   meeting   spot,   ”

“ oh come on, ” rocio groans. almost immediately there’s a grin bursting from formerly tight lips. “ no one is talented at everything. some of us are geniuses with the voice of a dying raccoon. should that preclude us from ever trying to carry a tune ? ” yes, it probably should, but as always, rocio didn’t care much. “ i’ll make sure you’ve got ear plugs next time, fair ? ” a hand reaches to pull their hair to one side, fanning the back of their neck. “ you gonna have a go or just rag on me ? "

“   hey,    i   never   said   you   couldn’t   sing,   ”    zoya   raises   her   hands   in   mock   defense,    her   head   shaking   to   the   sides   with   a   soft   smirk   tugging   at   her   lips.    “   but   what   i’m   basically   saying   is   that   when   you   try,    a   dog   three   blocks   away   is   howling,   ”    she   pushes   off   the   wall   she   was   leaning   against,    taking   a   step   closer   to   the   set   up,    arms   now   crossed   loosely   on   her   chest.   “   right   …   you   realize   that   if   this   goes   badly,    i’m   absolutely   telling   people   you   forced   me   into   it   ?   ”
