Key Learnings from the Revenue Model Webinar

This webinar highlighted the importance of carefully considered revenue models for business success. Here are some key takeaways that will be valuable for our Peer Projects:

* Strategic Planning: We learned the importance of planning our revenue streams from the beginning. This will ensure our business is financially sustainable.

* Customer Focus: Effective revenue models align with the needs of our target audience. By understanding student needs, we can tailor our offerings for maximum impact.

* Adaptability: The ability to combine different revenue models allows businesses to adapt to changing market demands. This flexibility will be crucial for Peer Projects' long-term success.

* Social Impact: As social entrepreneurs, our focus shouldn't solely be on profits. We should strive to create a positive impact on society, particularly for students in our case.

What key differences and similarities did you observe between social and non-social enterprise revenue models?

Social enterprises aim to address social or environmental issues while also generating income, often reinvesting their profits to support their mission. In contrast, non-social enterprises prioritize maximizing profits for their owners or shareholders, with minimal focus on social impact. Although their goals differ, both can use similar methods to earn revenue and adopt practices to remain sustainable.

2. How did the lecture series broaden your understanding of how revenue streams are generated for both social and non-social enterprises?

In gathering feedback through interviews, we identified a common challenge among civil engineering students: finding OJT placements. Securing an OJT spot can be daunting, as it requires impressing potential employers and navigating industry-specific hurdles. This feedback has guided us in shaping a tailored solution.

Our plan involves forming strategic partnerships with universities, internship-providing companies, government bodies, and technology providers. We aim to actively reach out through flyers, social media, and direct university collaborations. A tech provider will support us in building a platform designed to simplify the search process by offering personalized recommendations and application guidance.

Our platform will operate through a website, with social media and university channels serving as primary outreach avenues. Our target users include students, educational institutions, industry companies, and government organizations.

1. What will you do in the process of looking for an OJT?

I would start by asking my classmates or friends if they know any companies offering OJT. I’d also check online platforms like JobStreet or LinkedIn to see if there are any openings. If I can’t find anything, I might ask my professors for advice or approach companies directly by sending emails with my resume.

Pains:

What challenges do you think will you face when finding an OJT?

One big challenge would be finding a company that is actually hiring OJTs since a lot of them prefer experienced people. Another issue might be balancing the application process with my schoolwork. It’s also stressful not knowing if I’ll get accepted or not.

Gains:

How will an ojt finder improve your situation?

It would make things a lot easier by giving me a clear list of companies that are specifically looking for OJTs. It would save me time and effort from having to look everywhere, and it would help me avoid companies that aren’t open to OJT applicants. Plus, it would reduce the uncertainty of finding the right opportunity.

a.) How was your day yesterday? b.) What was something difficult or frustrating you dealt with yesterday? c.) How do you wish that problem could be fixed?

Interviewee's response:

a.) Yesterday, I had a busy but productive day even though I didn’t have any classes. I spent time doing my homework to keep up with my studies and also did some household chores. I was able to manage my time well, getting both schoolwork and chores done. It felt good to stay on top of things and make the most of the day, even without any classes.

b,) Even though I completed my homework, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being unsatisfied with my work. It’s frustrating because I know I put in my best effort, but it still feels like there’s always something more I could improve or add. No matter how much time and focus I give, there's this lingering feeling that my work isn't good enough or that it could be pushed further. It's almost as if the more I try, the more I notice the areas that still need improvement, which can be really overwhelming at times.
