I could make up a story about how actually it's the habits of thought taught by the 'hard sciences' that teach you to drill down in the specifics and not just be swayed by whoever can word things most persuasively, that in fact it's the idea that your efforts will not be judged by your peers but by nature itself that teaches you to subvert conventional wisdom and be able to say "no, this is wrong" even when everyone around you is going along. This story would be bullshit. But I'm not convinced it's any more bullshit than any alternative story you can tell about how the humanities teach you critical thinking and empathy.
