Last trip to Teralba, we built a bonfire. On went ruined mattresses, rat eaten artworks, broken bedposts, termite ridden floorboards, junk, memories, the lot. After a week, the fire was ready to burn. Friends and relatives drove to gather and scatter Dad’s ashes by the apple tree, and afterwards we feasted and set this alight.
The ashes were rougher than you’d think ashes would be. I’d imagined a fine dust, but they were chalkier, bittier, bonier. I’m still not reconciled that it was him we scattered. So much remains surreal.
Everyone had a different ashes-scattering style. Some walked a circle round the tree, some hurled into the wind, others the grass. Some poured wine, others beer, most tears. Someone kept a bit of him in their pocket, another took a handful to another friends grave. I did a bit of grass scattering combined with a tree rub.
When darkness fell and stars arose, we lit the fire with a healthy dose of kero. It burned fast, tall, fierce. We all stood back and watched, agog. After some time it settled down and we all came to sit around, drinking wine, sharing stories, thinking of Kim. Hard to believe he wasn’t standing somewhere nearby, holding a wine, eyes squinted, laughing, there in his happiest place.
My mum took this photo of me standing in front of that fire, the day before we burnt it down. This is the place of my earliest memories, and now it’s the place where my father lies. 30 years earlier he was strong, fit, happy, building the house you see at the top of the hill with mud bricks made using his own two hands. I’m around that same age now, and can see him in this picture of me, a little bit. Next week he would have been 64.

Musrum
Dad gave me this book on my 16th birthday wrapped in aluminum foil. My world exploded a little.
Created by Australian folk Anthony Earnshaw and Eric Thacker sometime in the acid haze of the late sixties, this surrealist work follows the adventures of Musrum, a Spirited Male Gypsy Mouse, as he journey through the Weed Kingdom.
I’ve also managed to track down its sequel, ‘Wintersol’, which features a maniacal Santa Claus and a female Gypsy Mouse called Bella.
But begin with Musrum. Musrum will change the way you see the world.
‘Musrum invented the first upstairs dungeon in existence. a subtle form of torture for prisoners with a fear of heights.’
'If it could be proven the Tree of Paradise’ was deciduous, most of the convictions of religion could be confuted.’
'Musrum placed two deadly killers, a tiger and a bottle of arsenic, in his private arena and sat for three days waiting for them to fight it out.’

d'awww! my grandad was one of the authors/illustrators of this, he died nearly 20 years ago but it’s pretty cool to find that his legacy has made it to tumblr!
That is so amazing! Do you still have any of the original artwork? I would sell my right arm to purchase an illustration from your grandad, this book is honestly one of the most incredible pieces of art I've ever found! What an incredible grandfather!

I’d love you to meet my grandpa, Arielle! The one in the black and white picture is actually my mom’s dad -- he’s a village chief in Manus, but was working as a teacher when the picture was taken. The cracker factories are owned by my Chinese grandpa -- you could meet them both if you like :) I took these photos the last time I was back in PNG. Crackers galore (I know, exciting stuff!) + the only two factory workers who weren’t camera-shy!
And if it existed, I would definitely sign up to that gym class. I’m also curious about what the previous 12 pages say... xxx Alyssa
I love that shack Alyssa, and your grandad looks like a total dreamboat. I would very much like to go to meet him one day at the cracker factory. This page above is for my dad but it’s the kind of exercise I could really get on board with also. Arielle
Lovely photos, Arielle. I’ve been dreaming of getting out of Sydney lately. This is Tarcoola -- Toohey’s grandparents’ untouched little shack. It’s my favorite place on the farm. xx Alyssa
My wonderful grandpa. This would have been taken some time in the 50s in PNG. xxx Alyssa
