âI knew immediately. Â I get a breast exam every year, so I know what normal is supposed to look like. Â I could see the tumor on the screen. Â It was messy. Â It was black. Â But I didnât feel shocked. Â I was calm. Â My surgery was scheduled for Valentineâs Day. Â And you know what? Â That was the most beautiful Valentineâs Day of my life. Â Because I spent it taking care of myself. Â I had a difficult childhood. Â Then I had a very hard love story that lasted for twenty years. Â And when that came to an end, I escaped into my work. Â I was like a hamster in a wheel: faster, faster, faster. Â It was easy to rationalize because I work in Womenâs Rights. Â I felt involved in something bigger than myself. Â But I just wrote reports about the situation. Â Honestly I changed myself much more than the country. Â I was worn down. Â I had no free time. Â And my children are grown, so I was wondering if I had any reason to live anymore. Â Then four months ago the cancer came. Â It was a blessing in a shitty package. Â It was something I couldnât control. Â And I was forced to accept that. Â Right now Iâm not doing anything. Â Iâm visiting with friends. Â Iâm taking time to relax. Â Iâm feeling grateful. Â And Iâm asking myself big questions: âWhere would I like to live?â Â âWhat would I like to do?â Â Questions I never had the time to ask. Â But most importantly Iâm taking care of myself. Â Now if youâll excuse me, Iâm late for my massage appointment.â (Paris, France)
âMy mother got blood cancer seven years ago. Â But she recovered, and we had five more years after that. Â Those years were the happiest moments of our lives. Â We never knew how much time we had left, but we knew it was limited. Â Weâd always been best friends. Â I told her my secrets. Â She gave me advice. Â She cooked for me like I was still a child. Â But before the cancer, things were so casual. Â She was always around. Â Nothing seemed important. Â She was strong. Â She was independent. Â She didnât seem to need attention. Â But when she was given a new life, I cherished her more. Â I became nicer. Â Softer. Â More sensitive to her needs. Â We started hugging. Â We hadnât hugged since childhood, but we started hugging. Â I can be difficult sometimes. Â Iâm stubborn. Â I donât agree easily. Â But she never had to convince me again. Â I took her to restaurants, movies, weddings. Â I found her artificial hair so she looked beautiful again. Â I sewed her the best dresses ever. Â I wanted to make her new life comfortable. Â And it was. Â It was the happiest sheâs ever been. Â Eventually the cancer came back. Â Itâs been over two years since she passed. Â For the longest time I cried like a baby. Â In the office. Â In the car. Â At church. Â She was my best friend. Â The world feels empty without her. Â Even last night I dreamed about her. Â But I know I must move on. Â I still think about her all the time. Â But now I donât always cry. Â Sometimes I smile.â (Paris, France)

âIâve worked all my life as an office clerk. Â But when I was young I dreamed of being an important writer. Â I won some prizes in my town. Â But mainly I used writing as a weapon, because I was completely in love with a girl who liked reading. Â At the time she was dating another boy in class who played basketball. Â He was popular. Â Quite a bit taller than me. Â Eventually he went on to play for the national team. Â And I was so shy. Â I could barely speak to her. Â At the end of the year I wrote her a long letter declaring my love. Â She broke up with the basketball player over the summer, and when I returned to school the following year, sheâd written âYesâ on my desk. Â Everything changed. Â The world had light and color. Â There was no more rain. Â Weâd go walking in the town center. Â We went dancing. Â But when Christmas came around, she told me she needed to talk. Â She was getting back together with the basketball player. Â So I played all my cards. Â I wrote a short story. Â It was about two soldiers competing for a womanâs love. Â One of them was a powerful lieutenant. Â The other was a simple soldier, who loved her more and later died in battle. Â When I finished I asked her to read it. Â She told me it was very nice, then married the basketball player.â Â (Madrid, Spain)
