Sketchbooks: Start your process to create great artwork

Sketchbooks are crucial for exploring and solving a production or design problem. Brainstorming, mood boards, inner monologing, research and detailed observations identify key creative directions. The design journey maintains a focus on exploration and keeping research concise. My sketchbooks strongly convey ideas through diagrams and drawings. This helps me to pitch ideas and themes to clients.

My creative space provides a working environment for me to relax and work. Both my gaming PC and Mac Book Pro enhances my workspace's atmosphere. Being able to play and work in my studio helps me to maintain my focus on working on design projects within tight timeframes.

Inspiration: Owen Davey - Influencer

Who in the hell are Owen Davey and that god damn festival you keep talking about?

Barcelona OFFF is an awesome design festival celebrating work by leading illustrators, photographers, bloggers and You Tubers. As part of my degree course, I had to attend the 2014 conference to develop my professional career and practice. This was where I was exposed to one crucial influencer for my career so far.

Owen Davey is a Brighton born illustrator who specializes in editorial work. His work ranging from the Realise medical cover to his well-drawn maps. Based on the website information, he has published a range of great illustrations for his music group,

What thing did your little brain of yours learn about your so-called influencer?

In terms of work ethics, I learned a great deal about how to pitch sketches to agencies or to the direct client. Many of sketches sent to his agent reveal the importance of showing a simple but strong concept,which is integral to making an effective pitch. Based on his sketchbook work, detail is great but simple stuff is easier for the client to understand and review.

Highlights:

Enjoyed his flat style of illustrations mixed with textures

Influenced me to carefully create a book that is useful to people

Incorporated his color schemes and textures into my style

Developed my own spin on these visuals components by using more stipple brush textures

What this influencer helped me?

After graduating from Uni, I discovered my passion for infographics, editorials, Mixed aspects of his style with into my Japanese, retro and sometimes doodle style Able to form my graphic style based on the techniques from Steal like an artist

Case Study: Infographics

Why did you want to this infographic project?

As an illustrator who wants to solve visual communication issues for clients, I wanted to create a piece of media that aims to inform people the importance of user-generated content.

What was a problem?

With every self-initiated project, I conceptualize a brief that features a problem. This infographic aims to inform people to get a great introduction to the user-generated content and the many creative directions they can take.

With the digitalize work, it has been proven on social media that audience’s attention span has decreased. Rather than writing a book, I wanted to create graphics that goes straight to the point.

Does this project help you?

Yes, it does. For presentation reasons, I can narrow down what type of clients I want to attract. I love visual communication projects. Whether it is branding or doodle work, I believe any work of its kind does strengthen me as a focused illustrator.

What is your conclusion?

Ladies, gentleman, cats, bears and any other animals, take notes. If you go to my website, there is one common thing in my illustration, my project work focuses on enhancing visual communication through unique art direction. I focus my branding on this. Even though doodles are seen as merchandise products, there are a couple of doodles aimed to bring ideas to life.

For upcoming designers, such as yourself, your portfolio should display what is your creative mind is capable off in term of client work, not just about making great looking art just because it makes you look good.

Case Study: Blue Bird - Planning a backup plan and getting experience seeing how a business is operated

Before I joined the Prince’s Trust Enterprise programme and worked on a couple of commissions, I wanted to get some experience with marketing to help me prepare for a career running my own business. With the help of Kimberly Marshall from the Prince’s Trust, I managed to get a short internship with a local company called Blue Bird.

This company specializes in making tea. The Brighton store has a cafe where people can purchase tea. This was where as part of the internship to work as a tea mixologist and barista. The experience was great.

George Duffy was fantastic for giving me the opportunity to work on the marketing duties. This work got me involved creating wholesale guides, menus and other cute/great stuff. Overall, it made think how I can approach running an online e-store and my main selling point.

Great things about this experience

Discovered a passion for the craft of the barista. Studied an SCA barista course at my disposal time

Discovered the amount of marketing and organization required to run a business

Worked with limited internet access.

Things about the experience:

To create a backup plan if something goes wrong in my illustration career

Enabled me to identify how enterprises function in term of decision making

Led to me to work on design projects with a local prince’s trust and Up Full

Figured out that personalization is a great thing for a business to have
