“Haven’t you read about them in my file?” Becker asks pointedly.
“No. I don’t snoop. Or look at the personal stuff.”
“Does that mean you don’t have the clearance?”
“No, it means I haven’t looked and I’d rather hear it from you.” Jess says firmly.
How do you tell her nicely to drop the subject and never talk about it again?
“I don’t have family.” Becker says without looking at her.
Yeah, no, that wasn’t it.
“Everyone has family, Becker.” Jess says.
“Dead? No. As good as, but no. They’re still alive.”
Drop it, Jess, just drop it. I can’t bring myself to swear at you out loud but will you please just shut the fuck up?
“Tell me about them.” Jess says.
What the fuck, Jessica? I just told you to shut up! In my head…so you didn’t hear me. Shit. You’re not going to stop asking till I tell you, are you?
“Fine. I’ll tell you about mine, you tell me about yours. You can go first.” Jess says.
“What if I don’t want to know about your family?” Becker asks.
“Then my uncle will be quite annoyed.” she mumbles.
“Nothing. Just…tell me about them. Please?”
Dear God. I’m going to tell you, aren’t I? Damn it.
“See? There we go, not so hard. And in return for telling me you have a sister, I will tell you that I have two.”
“Which would mean something if you hadn’t told me that three weeks after meeting me.”
“Shh. You have to tell me more now.”
“What do you want me to tell you?“ Becker asks, before immediately regretting his wording a little.
