Summary:

Curiosity—the kind that got him here—was the reason his mouth opened and out came, “What is it you get out of stealing life from people?”

The creature floated closer and all common sense that should have told him to step back was non-existent. Instead, Harry took a step closer.

It was obvious what the creature wanted. He only stared for a moment, no hesitance before his eyes slipped closed and he took.

Or the one where Harry encounters a Dementor as a child and doesn’t flee, no he sticks around and mimics what he sees.

Excerpt:

Harry didn’t know how long he had walked, but it was dark out. The streetlamps didn’t all turn on, only a handful working and when they did it was dim and a few blinking before not coming back on at all. He wasn’t afraid of the dark, his cupboard didn’t have light—the bulb had been taken out as a punishment a long time ago and Uncle Vernon never put it back in—but that didn’t mean he wanted to be surrounded by darkness.

The downside to silence was how jarring noise sounded when broken.

Harry froze when he heard breathing that wasn’t his own. It was behind him. He liked to think he was as brave as the superheroes in Dudley’s comics, but the sound grew closer and all he wanted to do was run, but he couldn’t. Panic kept him rooted but it also made his heart beat loudly, far too loudly.

Cold.

So cold. Night brought coldness but that didn’t make sense. It was the middle of summer and it shouldn’t make his breath visible or cause goosebumps to rise.

The longer he stood there, the more his mind grew strange. Flashes of memories that didn’t feel like his own cycled through quickly and the sound of someone screaming in the distance felt real, but he knew there wasn’t anyone else around.

The screaming grew louder. It was a woman and his mind wanted to draw upon an image, but it was hazy, and nothing made sense. Harry covered his ears, but it didn’t drown out a single thing.

“You aren’t a Muggle, are you?”

“A what?”

Strange words Wizards used.

The boy looked around uneasily before leaning forward, voice lowering as he whispered, “What did the building look like to you?”

“An ancient pub that should have been shut down ages ago.”

A snort and twitching lips had Harry trying not to smile. It was strange how at ease he was. The boy was weird, and Harry was still concerned with the massive amount of red in his aura, but he was still at ease.

“Maybe you’re a Muggleborn.”

“If you keep making up words, then so will I.”

When he was met with an eye roll, it distracted him. Was it normal for someone to have such a pretty shade of blue eyes—pale, so pale that they appeared grey?

“Are your parents Wizards?”

Harry couldn’t stop the look of disgust if he had tried. He ignored the curious look he got in return.

“I wouldn’t know,” he shrugged. “They died when I was a baby.”

“So, you grew up with Muggles? That sucks.”

“Mitimgrood.”

The boy shook his head, forehead wrinkled as he looked at Harry warily. “What?”

“I told you I could make up words too.”

Grey was replaced by tiny specs of yellow mixed into the red and it had Harry’s cheeks flushing.

1) the angst. Okay listen to me. I’m not one for angst. My chest aches with the pain of the characters and I need happiness, but this one. Was. So. Great!!!! It’s written so well, Draco’s POV is so deep that you live with him through the story. I was totally absorbed in how deliciously heartbreaking it was!! And, it’s Happy (very!!!) Ending in the most perfect way.

2) perfect length. It’s 20k which is such a nice read you can have even during your lunch break (why, yes, that’s exactly how I ended up reading this, woops). The story it’s so captivating that you hold your breath from start to finish barely blinking.

3) the friendship. It’s all about love this story, not only romantic love. There’s so much friendship, in all kind of ways, I was so happy reading it. Draco and Ron become true friends, and then even Hermione, and ultimately Harry and it all happens so normally, gradually. It felt unavoidable, just perfect.

“I see it in how you never forget to get me a coffee when you have a case near that fancy latte shop. It’s in the way you floo me to tell me about your day or send an owl just to say hi. It’s in every casual touch — as you lead me to my seat or brush lint off my jacket.”

As Harry continued, he expected Draco to do something — say something. But he kept staring at Harry.

“It’s in the way you visit my parents’ graves with me every Halloween and how you never fail to bring flowers for my mother and a good bourbon for my dad.”

The first Halloween after the war had dawned with Harry drunk and despondent, raging at Dumbledore’s grave. Draco had found him, sobered him up, and let him cry on his shoulder for hours, reminiscing on all the information he’d found out about his parents. 

Her best friend in school, Margaret, said despite her name, she was more fond of peonies than lilies … I found a note to Sirius accusing him of drinking my dad’s best bottle of bourbon, apparently, dad had won it in some game against Malcolm Creevey… My parents had a cat, sometimes I think about getting one, too … My dad never learned to ride a bicycle! 

When the sun had dipped below the trees, Draco — Malfoy to him then — had suggested visiting his parents. While Harry snuck some Polyjuice from the school’s stores, Draco had somehow managed to get a large bouquet of pink and white peonies and a bottle of bourbon discreetly out of the school. 

It had been in the tiny town of Godric’s Hollow, appearing to the world as Chet, a fifth-year Muggleborn, that Harry realized Draco could really be his friend. 

“It’s inked across my heart with the tattoo you designed. It’s evident in every photo of us that sits on the mantle in your office.”
