The High King snatched the envelope. He pulled out the letter that was inside. In his shock, Cardan almost missed the fact that something else had fallen out of the yellowed envelope. But the tiny beads of red clanged loudly as they hit the cold floors of the palace of Elfhame, calling to him in their familiarity. He staggered to them, suppressing his tremor, because deep down, he knew what he would find. It was a necklace made of rowan berries. Her necklace. A lock of crudely cut brown hair was attached to it. The content of the letter was short, almost mocking.
