omega mack who finds out his alpha cheated on him and he just. he just can't do it anymore. he can't keep lying to himself that he's a good omega. if he was good, he wouldn't be too much, like all his ex boyfriends have told him. if he was good, he wouldn't have to beg for it so hard during his heats. if he was good, maybe his alpha would've stayed instead of finding someone better to fuck behind his back.
he needs to hurt, like he deserves. he needs the feeling to go away. he needs to forget for just one night, and then he'll work on being good. so, he doesn't tell any of his friends, because they don't know him, not really, they don't know he's not a good omega, they'd just comfort him, and he doesn't deserve that. he finds a party on snap, puts on an outfit his soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend said makes him look like a slut, slaps on the heavy-duty scent patches dada had sent him "for emergencies only", and locks the door on the way out.
frat prez will is really fucking happy with his party, thank you very much. sure, it's gotten a little crazier than they'd originally planned, and he's had to dispatch dickie to break up a few near-fistfights, but overall it's going well. so, when gabe appears from the depths of the foyer to tell him that he'd overheard a group of alphas from northeastern with their eyes on an overly drunk omega dancing alone, planning something, he grimaces, claps gabe on the shoulder, and goes to find the omega, thinking it'll be another routine grab-them-a-bottle-of-water-and-order-them-an-uber-home type situation.
he finds the omega quickly, and damn, this guy's cute. he's so drunk he can barely dance anymore, and when will comes up to him, he smiles, flirty and closed-mouth, and turns his back to will with a lingering glance over his shoulder, winding his hips to the music.
"hey, man," will says, "you doing alright? want some water?"
the omega turns back to will looks him up and down. "i'd love some water," he giggles, and follows will out of the crowd.
they end up outside, the omega--mack, will's learned-- sat on the curb with his back against the big oak tree out front. mack has the water bottle clutched in his hand, half-empty, and is no more coherent than he had been 15 minutes ago.
"mack," will says, holding his phone out to the omega with the uber app pulled up. "can you put in your address?"
mack takes the phone but just blinks at him. "can't we go back to yours? i have a roommate." more blinking, like he's trying to bat his eyelashes but can't quite summon the muscle control to do it fast enough.
will winces when he realizes what mack's thinking. "no, i'm not-- i'm just trying to get you home," he tells him.
mack frowns. "you don't want me?" before will can even begin to try to answer that, mack continues: "is- is it the- they always say i smell good, wait--" and he reaches up to his neck and peels off the patch on his scent gland, rubbing it a bit and blinking up at will again.
the scent that will's hit with is decidedly not good. it's the stifling smog of misery shot through sharply with the same scent will had smelled on gabe when his asshole ex had broken up with him a week before his heat. heartbreak. it's overwhelming, and will can't help but rear his head back, heart leaping into his throat. what the fuck? sure, lots of people party as a coping mechanism, but will hadn't even suspected-- fuck. he can see now that what he'd thought was a bit of cool aloofness that mack held even in his drunken state was actually-- actually what? apathy? dissociation?
will's snapped out of his head when he hears a whimper. mack's still looking up at him, his eyes teary now, and his scent is somehow getting sadder.
"i'm sorry, i'm sorry, i'll put it back, i'm sorry," he's saying, over and over as he fruitlessly tries to unstick the patch from itself from when he'd folded it in half.
"hey, hey, hey, no, it's not that, it's okay," will rushes out, sitting down next to mack and loosely wrapping his hands around the omega's wrists to settle his frantic tugging. he's careful not to sit too close or hold him too firmly, this is a slippery slope, will knows, mack is drunk and heartbroken and clearly looking for a distraction from it all, and will will have no part in that, but he still wants to help, he wants to make sure this omega is okay and make his pain go away. "it's okay, i just wanna make sure you're alright."
mack's looking over at him, and a tear has slipped down his cheek, but his eyes don't look as wet anymore, and his scent isn't getting any worse.
will takes a deep breath and keeps going. "i think you should go home and sleep. can you put your address into the uber app there?" he detaches a hand from mack's wrist to gesture at his phone on the grass between them.
"and-- and do you have your phone on you? do you wanna call a friend to take care of you?"
mack shakes his head. "it's ok. my roommate's there." his voice is still wobbly. will's heart aches, and he fights to not let it bleed through to his scent.
he watches as mack jerkily types his address into the app, watches as he finishes the last of the water bottle and wipes the tear from his cheek. will stays there, next to mack, not quite touching him, but trying to be a calming presence nonetheless, thinking about what horrible person could hurt this omega. will walks mack to the door of the uber when it arrives, closing it behind him and wishing him goodnight, and wonders if he'll ever see him again, if he'll be able to actually help him, or if mack will just be a face and a name and a pain-filled scent that exists in his memory forever.
