Ginrei might be a character that's been misunderstood because he may look like a stern, tough warrior but also the other stuff that we know about him are:
When he saw Little Byakuya train, he said, "I'm touched" (by Byakuya's hard work) and Byakuya, despite the super formal language (which is also understandable considering the culture/family standing), seemed genuinely happy that he'd get to chat with Jii-sama. Okay at the end he seemed a bit worried about Byakuya's temper but I guess all parental figures would be concerned about having a little brat who goes around challenging Soul Society's most powerful captains with death threats lol
It's from a filler, but Ginrei told Kouga that it's not all about individual power, it's also about working with other people in your team/division (or something like that, I may be paraphrasing cuz I don't remember what exactly he said in the anime)
I think this was after the ending of that same filler episode? So I guess it's more like an omake than canon evidence, but Ginrei said "I spoil Byakuya/I let Byakuya have all he wants and he grows up to be like this" (then Ichigo told him about Real World parenting books lmaooooo) which also got me thinking that maybe Soujun died before that TBTP chapter/episode, as Ginrei basically said that he was the one who raised Byakuya
Iirc the only time that we saw anything about duty was when Ginrei told Byakuya about the Kuchiki duty of killing Kouga and even then it was just... that.
To me it seems like Ginrei truly cared for Byakuya as a person and as his grandchild, like he genuinely wanted to give Byakuya the best but at the same time wanting Byakuya to grow up to be a dependable clan head/captain/etc (and isn't that what all parental figures want for their children/charges?), and also ymmv on whether or not BBS is canon but Ginrei having various captains babysit Byakuya is also hilarious to me (and Byakuya, at that age, presumably being able to keep up with other squad members ahaha).

It’s over but I had fun giving giving my own evaluations and also I’m not caught up past the fullbringer arc:
Isshin: I really feel like he wouldn’t have sex with anyone after Masaki’s death and if he did it would be “a moment of weakness” and he would genuflect or flay himself for like a month and come back home like nothing happened lol
Askin: I don’t know him but he probably only fucks because he’s sleazy and coercive
Chad: definitely not a recreational kind of guy. If he gets a partner he’ll only do it if they ask and might find someone to settle down with and only do it with them lol
Urahara: oh he fuckin
Yhwach: idk
Kensei: ya
Grimmjow: I don’t think he fucks because I don’t think he’s interested, but if he does he’s like koutarou from slow damage by which I mean very and casual and noncommittal
Ulquiorra: be so fr
Renji: I feel like he would go to sex workers every now and then but thas it because of his crush on Rukia unless they’re already dating
Aizen: he’s sex repulsed aroace for sure. Probably tried it once and was like “that’s enough of that” 🤣. Either that or he finds one person he’s interested in and pursues them forever. Might’ve used sex as a tool while he was infiltrating the Gotei 13 tho
Tsukishima: probably occasionally, he’s got host club escort vibes…or he takes it up the ass
Ryuken: probably like Aizen but he’s just really picky
Yamamoto: maybe when he was younger but IDK maybe he fucks severely even as an old man
Byakuya: celibate like Isshin after his wife’s death but probably used to sleep around when he was younger but also probably not because he’s very uptight
Hisagi: I think yes but he’s the one who’s usually approached
Kaien: ONLY WITH HIS WIFE
Ukitake: uhhh no…? I don’t think he’d have the stamina for it and would comically pass out in the middle. pillow princess btw
Kenpachi: maybe once in a blue moon because first of all he’s scary and second he seems like he would turn away most advances unless he was really in the mood PLUS he's always accompanied by someone so he wouldn't get the chance either way
Shunsui: he’s either a whore or he can't get any I can’t find a middle ground
Gin: uhmmmm he fucks often but only if he is bottoming LMAO but in all seriousness he probably only really has eyes for Rangiku and that's why they're always closed
Starrk: he’s giving picky vibes too UNLESS the other agrees to bounce on it for him shgjdhgkdv
Mayuri: he’s aroace but if he does still have his dick (because I feel like he would’ve cut it off for some reason???) he uses it only for science 💀
Ichigo: he’s not horny and he’s rather chaste in regards to sexual things and he definitely didn't have sex with Orihime until he was well into his relationship with her haha I love him
Ginjo: probably has a hook up every other night to be honest
Kaname: CELIBACY GIF
Ikkaku: frequent visitor of the 100% consensual adult only brothel that’s probably in the soul society lmfao
Komamura: CELIBACY GIF
Shinji: he actually gets zero bitches ever. Got lucky once and never again
Yumichika: acts like no one knows he’s getting plowed every night
So, my brain has been absolute trash lately. It has hit capacity. Too much is happening all at once. But, between life and the occasional and often much-regretted look at the news, I muse. My most recent Bleach musing is: Kuchiki heirs!
And, oh, boy, prepare for mushy brain time!
[Warning: As mentioned, the brain is too full, so pardon me for rambling from my increasingly porous memory on this one!]
A n y w a y...
As my particular niche interest in an already niche interest focuses mainly on the Kuchiki characters and their immediate loved ones, my what-ifs constantly poking at what even is this family? Based on what I can remember and the few snippets I can easily find, we know the following "things" about the family and family dynamics:
🌸Thing the First: Byakuya is the 28th Head of the Kuchiki Family and the captain of the Sixth🌸
I don't have a scan at my fingertips for this particular factoid. The Wikipedia (not always a source of truth, I know) cites the Souls databook, which certainly feels correct. However, I remembered it being in Color Bleach. Either way, this information is interesting for purposes of this musing because, well, if Byakuya is the 28th Head of the Family, that means there were likely at least 27 other heads of the Family.
Which also means....
There must be a process for Head-dom! 🤸
🌸Thing the Second: Ginrei, Byakuya's granddad, was the 27th Head of the Kuchiki Family and was captain of the Sixth 🌸
So, I got the snippets for the "granddad" and "captain of the sixth" parts of this factoid. I don't think there is a scene in the manga proper that explicitly spells out that Ginrei is the 27th Head; although, my porous brain may be kicking in, so perhaps there is. I remember the Masked Q&A pages, where during Kubo's explanation of WTF happened to Byakuya's dad, Soujun, he revealed that Soujun was the next family head, but died in battle. I am presuming, then, that Soujun died before taking over the family and the squad.
This was all a long preamble to the next point that I find interesting, which is: It seems the captainship of Squad 6 is inherited to an extent, and this brings us to....
🌸Thing the Third: Soujun Kuchiki is Byakuya's father, who was Vice Captain/Lieutenant of the Sixth🌸
So, there isn't much about Soujun in the manga. What I remember about him comes from the Masked databook. Specifically, a Q&A with Kubo:
Q: Who is Sojun Kuchiki?
KUBO: Byakuya's late father.
Q: Was he killed in action?
KUBO: Yes. He was never cut out to fight, but since he's from the Kuchiki family he has the talent. Ginrei was concerned about his health, but he was the next family head so that's why he was appointed as assistant captain. But he dies in battle in the end.
Q: Was he talented though?
KUBO: He had the talent, but he was too quiet and too nice.
So... it would seem: (i) most Kuchiki have "talent," (ii) the titles of Head of the Family and Captain of the Sixth appear to follow a patrilineal line of inheritence, but (iii) Soujun was, indeed, "talented," which could be inferred to mean that he was capable (although the note of him being too quiet and nice is a knee-slapper given who we know for sure has helmed the Sixth).
On the last point, it isn't explicitly clear to me whether Soujun's capability was an important factor in his being next in line to lead the family and the Sixth. At the very least, the statement that Soujun "was never cut out to fight," would seem to bar him from leadership in a fighting manga organization, so... maybe "competence" (in the traditional sense) isn't as important for these roles or he had other skills to make up for the fact that he wasn't really "cut out to fight."
Either way, Kubo spells out that since Soujun was the next to head the family, he was appointed as assistant captain. This, too, is something to ponder over because... well... what does this mean in practice?
Based on Rukia's treatment, it doesn't seem that Kuchiki necessarily go to the Academy; although, it's unclear to me if this was just a special thing for Rukia--i.e., a byproduct of Byakuya being very literal about the "keep her safe" part of the vow he made to his wife--or if all Kuchiki or main-family Kuchiki skip out on the Academy. Maybe Soujun had private tutors and didn't slum it with the "public school" shinigami before heading into the ranks. Or, maybe Soujun was appointed straight to assistant-captain status after his super-duper Kuchiki training. Given just how hierarchical the Seireitei is, it's possible that Soujun never served as a lowly grunt under another ranked officer, especially since he wasn't very good at that whole fighting thing.
Who can say?
Stepping past Soujun for a second, though, I am assuming we are to believe the Kuchiki inheriting the Sixth's top officer roles wasn't always the case. Why? Well....
Because this person was the first captain of the Sixth:
And that person is Furoufushi Saitou... whose name is suspiciously not Kuchiki. But, hey, her hair is the same color as the Kuchiki guards so... put on your tinfoil hats and best believe there is a connection, baby!
🌸Thing the Fourth: Soujun Kuchiki died🌸
As mentioned in the Q&A excerpt above, Kubo confirmed that Soujun perished during battle. When? What battle? Who was there?
Great questions! And, at least from my recollection, they remain a mystery. Maybe this is the set-up to the mystery of who Byakuya showed his bankai to?
🌸Thing the Fifth: Ginrei Kuchiki is... Alive? Dead? Unclear🌸
Unlike with Soujun, Kubo hasn't been as explicit about Ginrei's fate, as I recall it. I think with Byakuya being both the Kuchiki Head and the Captain of the Sixth, one could assume that Ginrei might not be among the "living" in Soul Society, especially since there's a sense that the Gotei 13's retirement plan is likely til death do you part. But, while I prefer to think of the Gotei 13 as an organization operating on The Godfather style rules, we do know at least one lieutenant who effectively retired canonically, and that is the Sixth's lieutenant prior to Renji.
So....
Maybe Ginrei's retired, hanging out at the Kuchiki cabin on the lake fishing into his... twilight years? (Midnight years, really....)
There is perhaps some support for the "Ginrei Is Alive" theory in CFYOW (a source that is certainly there):
This happens in the Third Book (I think???) during a scene where Kyoraku is battling Temu Urahara with an Opioid Addiction this guy:
Now, I'm not going to pretend to understand CFYOW. The more I try to understand it, the more brain cells I actively lose, which is probably more a function of time than what I will charitably blame on the translation of this story. One could take the above excerpt to mean that Kyouraku plans to offer up his gratitude to Ginrei after all the battling stops, which implies that Ginrei is, y'know, actually around to receive such gratitude. Although, maybe Kyouraku is being cheeky and plans to dumb a cup of sake on the geezer's memorial. Or maybe he means that he'll have to remember to be nice to Ginrei when they reunite in hell or something.
It is Kyouraku after all.
So, why does it matter? Well, assuming Ginrei is indeed alive, it means the Kuchiki Lord can abdicate power to the next in line, which is...something??? Maybe??? If you squint -_-
🌸Thing the Sixth: Byakuya married Rukia's sister, Hisana, a pauper from Rukongai🌸
I'll pin that factoid here since it's interesting in the sense that we learn that Byakuya was given a choice as to his bride. That choice, as noted below, seemed to go over like a lead balloon with the fam.
Digging deeper, it is an odd choice for Mr. Law-and-Order Byakuya Kuchiki to fall in love with a peasant. Also, how the hell did L&O Kuchiki come across a peasant from Rukongai, anyway? We are given some details about the state of How Nobles and Peasants Interact from Renji's memories of the Academy days and the years that followed, so it doesn't seem like something that would have happened without some shenanigans. Kubo, however, has never shed light on this to my knowledge, which makes sense since it keeps Rukia's past mysterious, and mystery allows things to be open-ended should he want to take some random direction with Bleach at a later point in time.
🌸Thing the Seventh: Byakuya's marriage--or, more specifically, marrying someone from Rukongai--was against somebody's laws🌸
I say "somebody's laws" because it is unclear to me whose laws are being violated based on the English translation of the manga. I am assuming that it is the nobility's/Seireitei's laws and not clan-specific laws, but maybe the Kuchiki have their own black-letter laws and regulations along with the necessary guidance materials for interpretive and procedural purposes. (You just know this family has an Employee Handbook if you join along with a week-long orientation process with a test you must pass before you are allowed to do anything.) To support that assumption is another scene from CFYOW, also between Kyouraku and Tokinada:
I would assume that if a noble family could raise objections to what another noble family was up to re: marriage, that whatever Byakuya was doing here was a violation of the Law, law and not the Kuchiki Handbook for Good Little Heirs and Their Noble Consorts.
Digressing, the phrasing of "marrying someone from Rukongai" is interesting. Literally taken, this phrasing means even spiritually gifted folks who were born outside Seireitei would be precluded from marrying a high noble or, more narrowly, a Kuchiki. Which means that souls going through the soul cycle would be precluded, along with souls born in Rukongai. This is interesting since we learn that Vice Captains can mingle with high nobles, thus explaining Renji's dogged motivation to become a Vice Captain so that he could reunite with Rukia. It's possible that: (i) Byakuya is speaking imprecisely here or the translation is imprecise; (ii) socializing and marrying have different standards (i.e., Renji can share the same air as Rukia but they can't marry per the law/Kuchiki custom); and/or (iii) the laws/customs for an heir/current head of a Great Noble family are different from the laws/customs for members of that same family who are not in the direct or immediate line of succession.
🌸Thing the Eighth: Byakuya adopted Rukia as a sibling, which was also against The Rules🌸
Okay, so, here is where I want to talk about family.
The credited response whenever thinking about fictional families.
Specifically, the Kuchiki family presumably consists of more than just Byakuya, Ginrei, Soujun, Hisana, and Rukia. There are these--quite literally--faceless "family" members (see: the black panel above full of absolutely no one). How many other Kuchiki are there? Who can say? How influential are they? Well, Kubo makes it sound in his Q&A that the family is generally regarded as talented, so, probably somewhat. They are also members of one of the Great Noble Families, so... they have that going for them.
It doesn't seem as if these nameless, faceless "family" have much of a vote on what the Head chooses to do. What did resistance even look like, here? A strongly worded letter? A drive-by "I disagree!" in the corridors of Kuchiki Manor? Pearl clutching in the halls? I suppose there could have been defections. Perhaps some branch families decided to align themselves with another Great Noble Family to avoid the "sullying" of being associated with Rukon girls. We know the Tsunayashiro objected, but... in what forum? How did that look? Was it a public debate? A congressional hearing? A strong finger wagging at the Seireitei Convention Center?
A n y w a y....
These fistfuls of fun little factoids sort of bring me to the conundrum of what's next for this family?
Based on what I've read and retained, I get the sense that Byakuya hasn't remarried. (However, this, too, may be an assumption since Bleach isn't really about the nobility aside from Ichigo's curious place in it.) We also don't have any sense of who would be the next in line for the Kuchiki. It doesn't appear that Byakuya and Hisana's marriage produced a viable heir (although... this, also, is an assumption), and we don't have a next-in-line Vice Captain holding the water for Byakuya.
Perhaps Byakuya would marry again and produce an heir. However, given how the marriages in Bleach tend to go, though, perhaps not.
The sibling adoption angle is an interesting one, and one that I sort of wish Bleach had stuck with when it came to "families" (i.e., the better-funded families snatching up powerful prospects elsewhere to groom to be the next in line). This may have been the direction Kubo was heading from the very beginning, when Byakuya and Renji were introduced. And, there's historical precedent in the Edo period and earlier eras in Japan where families would adopt young men to groom and later run the family.
Perhaps, if ever revisited, this question is answered solely for the sake of parsimony/everything getting wrapped up in a pretty red bow, and Ichika becomes the next in line.

So Byakuya's father, Sojun described as being gentle and kind, not liking fighting that much despite being very talented...
And i was thinking; how great his dinamic with Jushiro would be. Like honestly, two men with a simmilar baseline personality. It would be so fun to watch.
Also i think papa Kuchiki would have became a fan favorite very soon. Like an actual Kuchiki who's a swearheart? Come on...
So a thing I always loved about Bleach is how Kubo looooves his wordplay, and it’s actually not that subtle, but it’s the kind of thing that gets lost very easily in translation. We forget that in English, names are all borrowed from other languages, or rooted in fairly archaic forms of English, but in most languages names are actually pretty straight forward and literal. In particular ideographic languages like Chinese and by extension Japanese are SUPER literal in that the meaning of a name is unavoidably apparent at a glance. So, for one of my favorite examples, let’s look at some family naming schemes that Kubo played with, starting with…
朽木: Kuchiki
For one it’s an actual surname, but it’s written with the characters Kuchi(朽) and Ki(木), meaning “Decayed”/”Rotten”(but also “secluded”)” and “Tree.” The verb Kuchiru(朽ちる) meaning literally “to decay/to rot” is also used in metaphor to mean “to die in obscurity” or “to be forgotten [over time].” The homonym phrase Kuchiki(朽ち木) refers to “a life lived in obscurity” or “a meaningless death,” evoking the poetic imagery of a lone dead tree, not collapsed, but rotted on the inside. For one, this obvious evocation of Death as a theme is a direct play into the role of Shinigami during Rukia’s first introduction. But it also influenced her somber look in the very first chapter, as well as Byakuya’s similarly sullen disposition when he first appears. It’s innate thematics also influenced Rukia’s status as an orphan, and Byakuya’s status as a widower, as well as the apparent end of the Kuchiki bloodline proper. The Kuchiki family tree is literally a dead one: incapable of growing further, but still standing.
Moreover, Byakuya, his father, his grandfather, and even Hisana actually all share a naming convention in which each name evokes a specific color:
Byakuya(白哉)
…is actually kind of a tricky one to start with… The Byaku(白) at least is super straight forward, being the kanji for “White,” but the Ya(哉) is a peculiar particle used for emphasis, but that has no direct translation of its own. So in a sense his name means “White!” but given translations of 哉 in different contexts of actual prose, it could also be read as something like, “How White!“ or “White, alas…“ or “sadly, [it is] White“ or “how sad, [it is] white.“ Which are all kind of appropriate. The exclamatory form being an overstatement of his purity, referenced in his stringent adherence to rules and law that defined his original role in the plot of Rukia’s execution; but also the lamenting form describing his relationship regarding his wife.
Soujyun(蒼純)
…is surprisingly clever for a name given to a character with no real appearance or role in the story, let alone any real personality or history to reference. His name reads as Sou(蒼) meaning “Blue/Green“ and Jyun(純) meaning “Purity”/“Innocence.” The Purity/Innocence part is effectively an echo of Byakuya’s use of “White,” tying the father and son together, but also perhaps a reference to the fact that no drama seems to have marred his character? (i.e. He’s innocent and his life was pure.)
So a few notes: There was a time when Japanese didn’t actually distinguish blue and green as colors, instead treating them as differing tones of the same color. From this the phrase “Blue” also describes someone immature, naive or inexperienced, as in an unripe fruit. (basically exactly the same as the English phrase, “Green.” But midori(緑) is the word for “Green” and only green, and doesn’t get used in this way in Japanese.) But Sou(蒼) can also be used to describe a color like a “Pale Blue,” a “Gray,” or even just translated as “Pale.” This feeds back into parallels with Byakuya’s “White,” as well as…
Ginrei(銀嶺)
…the patriarch of the Kuchiki family. His name is written with Gin(銀) for “Silver,” referring to both the metal and the color, and Rei(嶺) meaning “Peak” or “Summit.” The phrase together actually refers to a “snowy mountaintop.” The “Summit” part refers to his status at the top of the family, and the “Silver” in reference to the color completes this 3 stage progression down the men of the family: From lustrous silver, to pale gray, to emphatically pure white. The Kuchiki family is literally fading away, again referencing the metaphor of having been forgotten over time implicit to the name Kuchiki.
But that’s not all!
Hisana(緋真)
…Byakuya’s late wife, and Rukia’s eerily identical older sister, actually fits into this naming scheme too! Even in just the brief moments we’ve seen of her, her name is written with Hi(緋) meaning “Scarlet,” and Sana(真) although more commonly read on its own as Shin, which means “true”/”truth” or “real”/”reality.” The phrase “Scarlet Reality” or “Scarlet Truth” might seem jarringly out of place in this family of fading innocence and purity, but that is actually the point. She is the harsh, blood red, mark on Byakuya’s emblematic White that cannot be ignored. Her death is the brutal bloody truth of Byakuya’s tragic past, and she’s also the red flame of passion in his otherwise emotionless facade.
So curiously,
Rukia(ルキア)
…has no kanji for her name, just katakana. On the one hand she came first in the list of characters, so it’s just likely that she wasn’t supposed to have a gimmicky name at the start, but it is a little odd that he specifically forwent any overt meaning at all. There are some rumors flying around the Kubo named her after a species of Cosmos flower native to Mexico, which certain sounds in line with a bunch of Kubo’s interests and themes in Bleach, but the supposed interview has never been properly cited or otherwise corroborated. More over, there is no indication of a flower in that family with a name that could be misconstrued into Rukia. (and presumably it would’ve been the name Lucia.)
But Rukia is actually a Japanese name, and one with a variety of writings, in fact… But I’m not really going to get into random speculation, because that’s a whole other can of worms… for reference though, later characters who get only phonetically written names, with no kanji, are all Rukongai peasants like Gin, Zaraki, and Yachiru; the implication being they can’t (or at least couldn’t) read or write.
Happy Pride all the queers in my phone. But an extra happy pride to all the bisexuals in straight passing relationships. To the trans people still living in the closet for their safety. To the nonbinary people getting misgendered. To the ace and aro people who sometimes feel like Pride isn’t for them. To the BIPOC people who face discrimination in the queer community. To everyone who feels like they aren’t queer enough.
Ok so according to one pace, I only need to watch around 362 episodes, skipping 66, to reach Laws first appearance at 392.
Is this worth it? I told myself id never watch OP bc it's too long, and my dumb ass barely made it thru naruto Shippuden, like I swapped to the manga halfway into the war, and never finished the anime. (But I did finish the manga. (Boruto was never touched and I refuse to touch it))
Like is watching the anime just for a blorbo worth it? Should I suffer and read the manga first till that point then jump into the anime when bro is on screen? Idk... 300 episodes is double hxh... Like I know a lot of people like op. But I've never met someone who watched/read op so my sources are biased...
If I may ask, is the live action a viable option to get into it? Not sure I'm keen on starting with the live action. But at least for content, does it omit too much from the manga or is it pretty loyal?
I feel starting with the manga would be a great place to start just bc I know I'll be getting all the facts and lore.
Technically yes you could, but season 2 is a wierd case bc there are major spoilers that might ruin the reveals in the Manga 🤷🏿♀️
Season 1 does leave some stuff out (a flashback for exemple) but it's not THAT bad so you could start there.
But yeah I'd recommend reading the Manga! That's how I got into it at first before switching to the anime.
It has extra material like cover stories that are not featured in the anime and you don't have to deal with filler and sometimes god awful pacing (dressrosa 🧍🏾♀️)
Tho there IS one filler arc that's pretty good and could be worth watching.

What is fun about the last time Shanks saw Mihawk he was probably 29 on the cusp of 30 and then they fall out and they don’t really reconnect until Mihawk is middle age and Shanks on his way there.
That’s alot of time to miss someone you used to know intimately. A whole life has been lived there. And think how much Mihawk must have changed how much shanks himself has changed. All this to say that I really think Shanks loves watching this version of Mihawk being domestic and having his little old lady hobbies.
He loves watching him cook and bake and talk about recipes and how to make sure the little gremlins under his care are getting the proper nutrients. He loves watching him tend to his garden with his ridiculously domestic sun hat, he loves watching him pick strawberries and put them into a little quicker basket and plant and harvest cocoa trees for Perona, and teach Zoro how to chop vegetables really fast and embroider his little flower patterns and read erotica and newspapers Like the same thing and take naps in the sun spot like a cat and interact with the kids and just he likes seeing Mihawk live his life because I will never come down from the hill that Shanks really kind of subconsciously worries about him and his loneliness and kind of the empty way he was living his life.
Cause like I think for shanks it’s such a jarring juxtaposition with the Mihawk that’s still freshest in his memories 10 years ago. 20 something young dangerous and wanted. Mihawk back then was probably the definition of vagabond literally bound to nothing and no one except occasionally shanks. Sailing around in a tiny ass boat with only wine and his sword a one man calamity. The Mihawk he remembers was always itching for a fight and would gladly start one. And because I headcannon Mihawk probably didn’t get his title till after his big blowout with shanks this is still a Mihawk with a lot to fucking prove and he’ll prove it every chance he gets. This is a Mihawk who still regularly accepts challengers and is also actively challenging people. This is a Mihawk that is hunting marines for sport (or revenge Or both) His life revolves around wine, sword-fighting, violence and blood shed and in the way only a man that doesn’t even realize how lonely he is it revolved around shanks.
I just think 20 something Mihawk had 1 friend and 1 hobby and hewas a lonely fuck who was so intensely single-mindedly putting all his energy into both he ends up kind of losing both (shanks crumples under the weights of his expectations and he literally positions himself so far above the crowd in swordsmanship and the one fight he actually does want to have is ruined for him that for a long period of time he doesn’t even experience the same joy that he used to while fighting it’s just another thing he can no longer fully indulge in) 20 something year old Mihawk was a discontent mess rapidly spiraling into depression and nihilistic boredorm and like Shanks can’t do anything about it because Mihawk won’t do anything about it he won’t even properly acknowledge it’s happening. And suddenly they aren’t friends anymore the love of his life literally walks out of it.
And then 10 years go by and zap suddenly here’s this 41 one year old man mostly unchanged but definetly more mature on the cusp of something truly life changing and then there’s this 43 year old with an island and a home and these 2 kids that he can’t even properly contextualize how they fit into his life and that must be so jarring one moment shanks remember A 29 year old nihilist that is literally breaking his heart and now here’s a “mellowed” out little old grandma hobby having middle aged man doing needle point on a Sunday evening come to take his place. A whole life lived in 12 years and Shanks didn’t get to see a lot of it but he’s so glad to see this now, that he gets to have this now.
i cant be the only one who doesnt like the crossguild polycule because of how some people twinkify buggy. or just cause i dont care for buggy but it gives the trope of the big strong men and the little UwU boy who needs to be protected. he is a grown ass man
I imagine fem mihawk used to have long hair when she was younger then she cut that shi off and ended up with something closer to regular Mihawks hair mixed with a pixie cut sorta thing
