It’s interesting to me how often self proclaimed Dracula buffs will make noise about how stupid Harker is not to listen to the warnings of locals in the vicinity of Dracula’s castle while simultaneously speaking over actual people from that region in their efforts to sound impressive by sharing Vlad the Impaler facts they learned on some History Channel documentary and reciting bullet points about strigoi and moroi they pulled from some book with a title in Papyrus font.

There’s a lot of complex ways in which the novel interacts with actual Romanian/Hungarian/Transylvanian history and culture (topics about which I am admittedly not an expert), but I think that the big takeaway you ought be getting from an instinct to dismiss Harker’s initial actions as dumb is that it pays to listen carefully and respectfully to what people tell you about their history, beliefs, and lived experiences and not to be a condescending white dude who sets himself up to unthinkingly stumble into a murder house because he thinks he knows better than the natives on account of one day’s worth of library research.
