I went through and re-read Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou over the past few days. The English translation got wiped from mangadex, but I've read the series enough times that it felt worth buying the Seven Seas translation of it.
Got to the end of the first omnibus volume and saw that they adapted the original Kanagawa dialect for a lot of the dialogue into the Atlantic Canadian dialect. The adaptation work was done by a fellow Nova Scotian (Dawn Davis), and gave it an even more familiar feeling than it already had.
I feel like Nova Scotia has a pretty similar relation to the ocean and mountains as Japan. Plenty of communities around here have a feeling of being reclaimed by nature as the young folks drift away that resonates with the series.
I love the world it presents, with characters taking time to just exist, to see things for the sake of seeing them, catching up after years like you just saw each other. I feel a longing for that kind of existence that almost feels like nostalgia.
It's easy to read through it quickly if you're just looking at the dialogue, so I make a conscious effort to slow down and linger on the imagery. I try to take in the whole scene and imagine it beyond just the panels of the story. It's kind of like a mindfulness exercise.
But I also like it as an excuse to touch my tongue to my wife's and ask her if she received my data.
