A dinky dark green car with a mismatched red door and stickers on it drives up to where you’re waiting. You know this car, it’s your friend Doug
As I pull up I roll down the window, “Hey bub, how’s it going?”
From your lack of response, not great. You’re grumpy and tired, and feeling bad, and you weren’t in the mood to go do what we’d planned earlier. You frown and pull your knees in to wrap your arms around them. I reach over and open the door
“No good huh?” You shake your head. “Well what do you want to do? I can park, or you could hop in and we can just drive for a while.” You get up, gather your things, and I help you into the car. I give you a comforting squeeze.
Once you’re in, we drive around lazily on quiet streets. I have the radio on but it’s not loud. I open the glovebox. “Snack?” I ask. There’s pretzels, dried fruit, trail mix, and a bag of tortilla chips. “Can’t do so good if your tummy’s not happy too, after all.”
You munch on your snack, but start to sniff. It felt like there were just too many big feelings bumping around in your head to keep it together. I notice, and grab a tissue box. “Here, I’ll find a quiet spot to pull over, you take this for now okay?” I find a spot under a large tree with red-purple leaves and small plums
“You know, I’m not gonna say it’s okay, because maybe it’s not. If you wanna talk though, or be held, or rip up some grass, I gotchu ok?” You wipe your nose and look at the car seats where the sun is dancing through the leaves. It’s pretty
I reach into the back and pull out a stuffed animal. “Here, if you want to cuddle something.” You take it, and squeeze it tight. Whether it’s in anger or sadness or just wanting comfort, it’s nice to have something warm and soft
We stay there for a while, just letting you feel the feels. Eventually, we crawl into the backseat and I hold you for a while. If you need big solid squeezes, I squeeze you. If you need gentle pats and light fingertips, I quietly trace shapes
“Do you want to play a little game while we’re here?” I ask, and you perk up a little. “I spy with my little eye, something that is… orange!” You look around, before pointing to the orange keychain on my belt
“Yes! Do you wanna go or do I go again?” You squeeze my arm, and I start again, this time spying something soft
We continue to play until you start to feel better, then climb back into our seats and start the car. It might be a rough day for you, but there’s still time for it to calm down and to make it a little better, and I seem determined to make that happen
