Digging the vibe of the new 2025 RRL winter collection, reminiscent of early climbing expeditions on Annapurna and Everest in the 50s and 60s which consisted of leather mountaineering boots, wool sweaters, insulated pants, wax cotton parkas, gabardine, and canvas backpacks - as first seen around the world on Hillary and Norgay. Some of this gear was also inspired by WWII military surplus worn by soldiers and aviators in high altitudes. The gear was simple, heavy, durable, and inspired by the world's most extreme conditions.
navajo woman, shiprock, circa 1913
Robert Redford was more than a leading man and a movie star - he was the reflection of a golden era in Hollywood cinema, and an America that feels like it’s slipping into memory.
On screen, he carried a kind of gravity that didn’t need volume. In "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," he gave charm a shadow; in "All the President’s Men," he turned quiet persistence into heroism; in "The Natural", his aging ballplayer persona chasing one last swing at redemption - embodied myth itself. His performances weren’t showy - they were lived-in, cut from the same cloth as the mountains he would later retreat to.
As a director, he stripped away the gloss of Hollywood and revealed a part of himself that was more raw and truthful. "Ordinary People," Redford's directorial debut (and masterpiece) told us that he wasn’t interested in just being seen - he wanted to hold up a mirror to what hurts and what eventually heals. This film is fragile, heartbreaking, and unbearably human.
What set Redford apart, though, was how little he seemed to care for the trappings of the world he helped define. He lived in the mountains, wore the same sun-faded denim and corduroy for decades, and in doing so, accidentally became a style icon. He gave back where it mattered: protecting the land that gave him peace and wild horses that he loved, preserving Native American arts and culture, and building Sundance into a haven for voices outside the system.
He was both Hollywood’s golden face and its quiet dissenter. A man who could have basked forever in the spotlight, but chose the solitude of wide skies, snowcapped peaks, and the whisper of aspen trees.
Rest in peace, Bob. You will be sorely missed, but your legacy will endure
