Lois wasn’t supposed to be a mother. She had accepted that on her wedding day. There was no way a human and an alien could have a child, right?

It was easy to accept. Her mom had been a crappy mother, so she’d probably be one too. It was for the best. She worked too much and Clark superheroed too much (was that a verb?). They didn’t have time for kids.

But then her period was late. And on a whim, she took a pregnancy test. And then two more. As each turned positive, her excitement grew. All that talk of not caring if they could conceive was just bluster. She wanted to be a mother. 

And she wasn’t going to be a repeat of her mother. 

All these months later, as she laid in her hospital bed with not one but two babies in her arms, her resolve had only strengthened.

Jordan. Jonathan. Her impossible babies from across the stars. 

All she needed was Clark to return from his phone call with his mom, and she’d have everything she needed right in this room. As if on cue, Clark returned to the room, his face adorned with a smile while he held something behind his back. 

“What are you hiding?” Lois asked with amused skepticism. 

His grin widened, and he slowly brought his hand forward, showing a vase with white flowers. “They’re daisies,” he said.

“I can see that.”

“Ma, uh, said daisies mean innocence and new beginnings.”

Lois raised an eyebrow. No one had ever dared to call her innocent before. “Nice of you to buy yourself flowers, Smallville.”

He blushed. “No, I, uh, for you… because you’re a new mom.” He thrust the vase toward her. 

Lois smiled. She loved how she could still make him so flustered. “Thanks.”

“No, uh… thank you.” He gestured at the babies. “Today I realized who the real superhero was.”

Lois stared at the flowers. “…the florist?”

No one had ever been in the “Fortress of Solitude” before. Not even Clark’s own mother. It was his… special place. A little slice of Krypton on Earth. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to share this part of his life with his ma. It’s just… it was Krypton. All that was left of Krypton, at least, other than him. 

His Ma couldn’t understand. She was his mother through and through, the woman who raised him and loved him no matter what challenges he brought his family.

But this part of his life…

No, his Ma could never understand. 

But Lois? Things were different with Lois. Once Lois had gotten over the initial shock of who he was, he knew he had to share it with her. He had to share all parts of who he was. 

He had to take her to the Fortress. 

“A bit… man cavey,” the perpetually blunt Lois said. 

Clark simply smiled. “Well, I am a man. And it’s literally in a cave.”

Lois scoffed and asked to be brought back to Smallville. His heart sank. She didn’t understand. She didn’t want to be a part of this side of his life. 

Lois asked to be dropped off on Main Street. Clark wiped a tear as he flew away. 

A short while later she called for him to return. She had a vase in her hands, filled with blue tulips. She handed it to him, beaming. “That cave of yours needs brightening up.”

Butterflies fluttered in his stomach. She wasn’t rejecting that part of his life. She was adding her own personal touch to it.  

“They won’t get a lot of sunlight up there,” Clark pointed out.

Lois shrugged. “They’re cut. Besides, that just means I’ll need to come by again to replace them after they dry out.” She stood up on her tiptoes. Their lips were just out of reach, so Clark helped close the gap. They kissed. 

Sarah had already changed her outfit three times. It wasn’t the right temperature for a sundress. The t-shirt/sweatpants combo was too casual. And the pink halter was way too risqué.

She didn’t want Nat getting the wrong idea. So many people thought being bisexual meant you wanted to kiss everything that moved. That you couldn’t control yourself. And even if her mind did sometimes drift there, she knew better than to entertain those thoughts. Friendship wasn’t something you threw away over a silly crush. 

Just look at how bad things had crashed and burned with Jordan. 

Besides, Nat was definitely straight. Had she been anything else she surely would have told Sarah after the whole Aubrey drama. 

There was a knock on her door as Sarah changed into her fourth outfit: jeans and a simple sweater. Her mom entered, eyes landing on the mess of clothes on the door. 

“Oh,” she said, eyes lighting up. “You have a date.” It wasn’t a question.

“Just a friend date,” Sarah swore. 

Her mom bent down and picked up the halter dress. “Just a friend, huh?”

Sarah snatched the dress away. “You don’t get it.” She threw the scattered clothes back into the closet while her mom watched from the bed. 

“This friend… it doesn’t happen to be a girl?” her mom asked.

Heat rushed to her face. Was it that obvious?

“A girl from camp?”

“What? No, no, I swear, Aubrey and I really are just friends.”

“Oh.” Her mom seemed to sit up a little straighter. “So this girl’s not ‘just’ a friend?”

“What? No—I—you’re twisting my words!”

“Sarah, if you’re fretting this much over what to wear, then it’s not just a friend.”

Sarah frowned. “She’s straight, Mom.”

“Did she tell you that?”

Sarah shook her head. 

“Well then how do you know?”

Jon buried his head into his pillow, letting it soak up his tears and muffle any sound that might escape his throat. Not that it would help if a sob broke out. Goddamn Dad and Jordan’s superpowers. 

Sniffing, Jon wiped his eyes and picked up his phone. It would be impossible to sleep, not with these thoughts screaming for attention. He needed a distraction. 

Instead, he found several new alerts and messages on his phone again.

He should’ve ignored them. Deleted them. Not ruminated on them. But despite his better judgment, Jon opened the messenger app.

Finally, the tears stopped. Maybe he had run out. There was nothing left to give.

He kept reading. Scrolling down, down, down, reading each threat, each cuss out, each ridicule, and taking it to heart. 

He deserved this. This was his penance for ruining everything. For being a bad person. For being a bad son. 

And then, buried amidst all the harassment, were several missed messages from Candice, sent around noon.

hey were are you?

I thought we were meeting at lunch

are you okay? did something happen?

just tell me whats going on

Why did you disappear from school?

He could add crappy boyfriend to his list of sins. 

The smart thing would be to put his phone back down. To close his eyes and rest his mind, even if sleep refused to come. But instead he kept scrolling. He kept reading. He found every message that had been sent the last month.

At some point he did finally drift off, only to be woken up in a cold sweat with visions of being crushed to death. At least it was better than seeing his own face—Jon-El’s face.

Still, he didn’t dare let himself fall back asleep after that.
