I understand that you can never really talk about or critique culture without contradicting yourself in some way, but I still find this interesting.

He talks about rejecting the cultural notion of what is considered beautiful, yet he seems to prioritize it himself.

Of course, nobody can completely reject cultural standards while living within society. But I find it strange that he internalized this particular ideal of thinness while simultaneously claiming to reject cultural values, especially those surrounding attraction.

It does depend heavily on why someone has an eating disorder. However, in his list you can see that he cared, at least to some extent, about other people's opinions and conventional attractiveness. There are multiple points that revolve around being seen as beautiful, desirable, or admired by others.

He was clearly intelligent, which is why I've been thinking about how his philosophy relates to his eating disorder.

The same question applies to others who hold similar anti-cultural views while also suffering from an eating disorder. Again, it depends on why they have it.

If the motivation is based on beauty standards or on how other people perceive you, then I think it contradicts the claim of rejecting those cultural values.

I'm not saying you can't have anorexia or bulimia and be anti-cultural. There are countless reasons someone can develop an eating disorder that have nothing to do with beauty or social approval.

My point is much narrower: if your eating disorder is driven by conventional ideas of attractiveness and other people's perceptions of you, while you simultaneously claim to reject those same cultural standards of beauty, I think there's an obvious contradiction there.
