Today, February 10th, exactly 75 years ago Munchausen syndrome was first referred to by it's given name in an article published by physician Richard Asher. After 75 years of being in public knowledge, this highly stigmatized disorder has continuously been misrepresented and misunderstood, people suffering from it are still often ignored or mistreated. Despite the common narrative, people with munchausen are not evil, simply misunderstood. The focus continues to be on how their symptoms effect the people around them even though the person with munchausen is always the one who suffers from it the most. Munhcausen is one of the most brutal disorders as it effects every single aspect of your life. It can ruin your relationships, it can ruin your health, it can even kill you. Repressing the urges can eat away at a person suffering in complete silence and once it finally gets too far and their symptoms start showing they are often abandoned by their loved ones at a time where they would need them the most, leaving them fight it completely alone can lead to devastating outcomes. There's an unfortunate amount of cases where people with munchausen end up developing severe complications or even dying due to lack of access to help. Spreading awareness and ending the stigma is a key step in improving and saving lives of people who suffer from munchausen syndrome. Having a day to spread awareness is one way to do that.
