A new phenomenon of weightlifting has made it's way to gym facilities. Gym owners looking for a way to provide quick service and a cleaner looking gym have shifted from conventional dumbbells to "selectorized dumbbells." It's a faster and efficient way to get a great workout. No more messy weights thrown about. The result? Scott K. from Albuquerque, NM said,
"Most gyms are a mess of machines and misplaced weights, and who knows if the weight you need is available? I realized how spoiled my Powerblocks have made me when I tried working out with some old plate-and-collar dumbbells. By the time I had them assembled, I had way overshot when I was supposed to start my next set, and they were clumsy and unstable. Never again."
The picture on the right is from from the Core Performance Corporate Wellness Campus Illinois. Other notable facilities going this route include Boston University, Arizona Diamondbacks, Denver Broncos and Lifetime Fitness Colorado Springs to name a few. Definitely a great way to enhance client experience and reduce clutter in one shot.
Having the proper space, lighting, and weight selection is a huge part of creating an enjoyable experience for your clients. This group-ex class seems to be having a great time using weights, and you can even see one patron smiling. This is atypical during a weightlifting routine, but this clever gym owner in Colorado Springs found the key.
Group-ex classes traditionally feature a group of clients with one instructor giving direction. Normally, the workouts are fast paced and weights are never used because trying to find a set of dumbbells that suits everyone in the class in next to impossible, unless of course you are willing to pay big money for many weight sets. This particular class is using an adjustable weight system that can be tailored to any fitness level, a big plus when looking to create an encouraging atmosphere. At any point, the gym go-er can step up the intensity without having to wait for weight. The result? Twenty motivated folks making sweaty carpet look enjoyable.
I'm sure you get at least one of these complaints for your loyal patrons everyday. Some newbies have this conception that this is what EVERYONE does when they go to the gym. In some cases, it can be true, but setting the expectations upfront can minimize the effort spent on correcting these bad behaviors. Here are some effective ways you can condition proper gym etiquette:
1. Signage at weight stations
Head to a local Fedex Kinkos and have them craft up some posters with your logo politely asking your patrons to clean up after themselves in order to create a pleasant and hygienic experience for everyone. Don't assume everyone knows to do that. We know some people will ignore the signs, but at least those new to your establishment will respect it.
2. Spray bottles and paper towels
Having these items strategically located in high traffic areas will encourage your clients to use them. Have a poster with a big red arrow pointing to it so they know it's there and what it's for. Conditioning your clients to do this upfront will set the expectations in the future.
3. Proper gym attire at front door
You can stop this from being a problem before clients step into your facility if you combat it at the front door. Have the rules at eye level so you won't get the "I didn't know excuse" although you'll probably still get it any way. Have your front desk employees check for proper attire as well.
4. Make your own video like this
A great way to brand yourself and have a little fun. Get your team together and cover the no-no's. Have this playing in loop at a few monitors around your facility. People will get a laugh and may even catch themselves in the act. At least it's a way for them to police themselves. Tweet it, YouTube it, Share it. They'll get the message.
Creating a quality experience
Everyone has his or her own style when it comes to gym training. Some people like group exercise, some like individual exercise, and some like both. What we all agree on is that EVERYONE wants the experience to be pleasant and inviting. Every gym should provide that such experience you'll see here, and be mindful of those things that can hinder it.
