Architecture 101 | Ted & Lorelai
"Pst, we all have our moments. Happens to me all the time. Like, Monday was my daughterās first day at her new school. Sheās going to Chliton, where everyoneās parents wear suits 24/7. Theyāre like those stupid dolls that come in one outfit and you canāt ever change them. I mean, what kid wants that? Anyway - of course, we were running late and we barely got out the door. I had nothing clean to wear, except for a pair of cut off shorts and my cowboy boots ā I looked I could have been Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver. Anyway, I just expected to drop her off and leave, but my mom was there and basically I ended up meeting her Principal like that. So, I know what thatās like. And hey, you were actually way better than the other guy. At least you kept the class awake."Ā
Lorelai grinned, āOh, yeah. The old āteacher in the wrong roomā test. Make sure we all really know our classes schedules?ā She asked, teasingly. āDidnāt know they were still doing that. ā
It was Lorelaiās turn to order and, stepping up, she quickly said, āLargest cup of coffee you have. Oh! And an order of fries.ā The cashier gave her a look, but handed her an empty cup to fill up and her change.Ā
Lorelai went to fill up her coffee cup and when she got back to wait for her fries, Ted had already ordered and was waiting, too.Ā
"Oh, hey, Iām Lorelai, by the way." She said, "I mean, if you didnāt already know that, being College Intelligence and all," She teased.
Ted laughed, nodding throughout her story. When, finally, she reached the end, his eyes widened in a kind of disbelief. "What? You met her principal in a pair of cowboy boots? No way!" He paused, for a moment, considering. "Tell me now, were they red?" With this he laughed a little, thinking about his own red cowboy boots stowed at home in his closet.
But this was neither the time nor place-- Or was it?
"I myself have a pair of mighty fine cowboy boots at home," he tried to say nonchalantly. He was, after all, never one to brag. "I'm sure they made quite an impression on your daughter's principal." He paused then, considering what he'd just said. "Though you definitely don't look old enough to have a daughter. And you said she goes to Chilton? That's a high school. You're not old enough to have a daughter in high school! You adopted, right?"
But then it was the woman's turn to order. He chuckled as she asked for the largest cup of coffee they had and then, sadly, watched her go. He ordered a couple sandwiches-- he intended to take one home for Marshall --and then stepped off to the side to wait. .. And after a moment, the woman returned.
"Lorelai?" he grinned, nodding slightly. "That's an unusual name. I'm, of course, Professor Mosby." He leaned forward, slightly, in almost a kind of bow before adding, "Though I suppose you can call me Ted. Since you won't be taking my class this semester." He laughed a little then adding, "Though don't tell College Intelligence. They might strip me of my title."
And with that, he winked.
