Item: various furniture designed using Cybertronian technology
contraptions for getting your hand meats pinched
You know, I’ve made a few items vaguely like these - not quite as good, but of the same general concept.
Wanna know what I discovered? They’re markedly not useful in most cases. Sometimes, yeah, but mostly we want furniture that’s just there. The added cost, weight, and loss of durability isn’t worth it. The idea of a coffee table that splits apart to end tables or C tables is cool, but turns out it if you ant a coffee table, you really just want a coffee table. Ditto with most of this stuff.
Some of it works well, but converting things is seldom a good idea. Which is a shame because it looks neat.
I’ll never forget seeing a video of this in college. I was in a 3D modeling class and the professor showed a video of those of these concepts especially the chairs. We had to design a new concept chair that could be space saving but it also had to be ergonomic. Because he wanted us to make the future of chairs! A superior chair! Oh and we were going to use the new CNC machine to make the actual chairs. So then it wasn’t just a concept but a prototype…
Only problems were that we only had a few weeks while taking other classes, a handful of times to go to the studio to build them when classes weren’t happening in the studio, and none of us had taken a sculpture or woodworking class. So yeah my “future” chair didn’t turn out great. My future instead led me to the hospital after injuring myself in the studio on a sander trying to finish before the due date. And after I finished the chair past the due date I couldn’t even sit on it because it was impossible to without falling off.
Adding this to my 3D modeling blog from college! This way if anyone there finds this they realize it’s bullshit to force a student to do something like this with barely any time or experience!!!!
