&& she’s been up late again. Early to rise & late to bed, nothing out of the ordinary, in the least—-OFTENTIMES, she’s found the hours tick by quicker than she could ever dare grasp, there never being enough minutes or hours in a day, or days in a month, much less, months in a year ; it was a necessity to take what she could, for as long as she’s able.
But then, then. There were those quiet nights that seemed to drag, where every BREATH was consciously taken and every heartbeat COUNTED, slow. & steady—- & she’d find herself listening for the footfalls and thumps of her boys or their laughter and murmured voices through closed doors, or the familiar sound of clanging and shenanigans and genius in the making. & her heart would swell and she swears it would burst if it could.
She’d detour then. Instead of marching herself up to bed like intended, her hands would reach for her sweet, sweet cat, eventually settling themselves onto the sofa, a B-rated horror movie already set in queue, plans changing to staying up until the sounds of her favorites dozing off started.
STILL, even THE BEST LAID PLANS are offset, her eyes grew HEAVY despite the terror onscreen, momentarily drifting shut before popping open because goddamn is she going to fall asleep before the movie is over or the voices started to fade. The attempt lasted all but five minutes, a deep sleep quickly overtaking, her last conscious thought of a loud curse drifting up the stairs—-
IT WOULD BE oddly warm when she awakens, she’d drowsily wonder if Mochi had momentarily GROWN, as irrational the thought. Her mind would PAUSE at the absurdity, brows would furrow slightly, fingers curling around thick fabric.
& SHE’D LAUGH to herself, startling the cat lying on her feet awake ;
