Mad Men - Betty Draper
Betty Draper love of my life. Woman who bases literally her entire personhood on how well she knows her place. Tries exactly twice over the course of the show to give herself something to live for. The first time, her husband sabotages her and she never finds out. The second time, she's almost successful, and then out of nowhere she finds out she has advanced lung cancer and 6 months to live. It's really no wonder she had no fight left at the end. From her perspective, the universe punishes her every time she dares to want something for herself beyond marriage and motherhood. And she's already achieved both of those things. Of course it's time to lay down and die. Die young, die beautiful, die valuable. But she keeps going to class anyway, because she's going to live her last months on earth for herself.
I adored Betty Draper. She was a terrible mother, but she wasnât any worse than Don was as a father. And itâs refreshing to see complex female characters on TV, full of nuance and contradictions, who also happen to be terrible mothers. Because terrible mothers do existâwomen who simply werenât meant to be mothers but ended up having children because society told them thatâs what they were supposed to do. Because if youâre not a mother, youâre not a âcompleteâ woman. Or simply because the patriarchal perception of women dictates that their ultimate purpose in life is motherhood.
Betty Draper was never meant to be a motherâshe became one because, in her time, that was just what you did when you got married. That was the only role you had, the only thing you were valued for. But not all women are meant to be mothers, and she definitely wasnât. What I loved most about her character was how perfectly she represented what happens when a woman becomes a mother without ever having been meant for itâjust because society expected it from her.
More female characters who are terrible mothers because motherhood was never for them, please. I need women who deeply regret having children. Breaking the taboo around maternal myths is my cardio.
my opinion on klaroline/klayley/klamille is that a 1000 year old man wouldnât say âheâs your first love, I intend to be your lastâhowever long it takesâ unless he was 100% locked in

đ Nadinâs Hope: A Mother, A Memory, A Future
Hello, my name is Nadin. Iâm from Gaza. Iâm a graphic design graduate, a wifeâand now, a mother.
I finished my design studies just before the war began. I had dreams of starting a small studio, of creating art that told stories. I used to think about colors and fonts and the future.
Then, the war came. And the future became something we tried to hold onto, moment by moment.
On October 22, 2023, I learned I was pregnant when a missile destroyed my husbandâs family home, killing 25 membersâhis mother, siblings, nieces and nephewsâentire branches of our family in seconds.
We were displaced twice. Everything was goneâhome, safety, routine, rest.
A few weeks later, I gave birth to our daughter. There was no crib, no celebrationânot even stillness. But she arrived, quietly and beautifully. In her eyes I saw something I hadnât felt in weeks: life that still wanted to grow.
Now, our days are shaped by decisions that could dismantle the future we are trying to build together.
Today, Israelâs government is discussing plans for a full military occupation of the Gaza Strip, including Gaza City and southern regions. The stated aim: to eliminate Hamas and later hand governing control to allied Arab forcesânot Israelâbut with no clear path to peace or normalcy.
The humanitarian fallout is devastating. More than 61,000 Palestinians have died in this war; hunger and malnutrition are rising sharply. Hospitals in north Gaza have shut down, and 193 people have now died of starvation, nearly half of them children.
Aid remains blocked, water is scarce, and many risk dying of hunger or disease long before future promises arrive.
We Donât Know What Comes Next Thereâs no clear path forwardâonly uncertainty for our daughterâs life and our ability to survive another day.
My name is Nadin, and Iâm a mother from Gaza.
How You Can Help Iâm asking for supportânot for comfort, but for survival:
Help us meet basic needs so we can breathe, heal, and preserve a world for our daughter.
Support us as I try to stand again on my own feetâeven a glimmer of stability matters.
If youâve read this far, thank you. If you can giveâthank you. If you canâtâjust sharing this post is a lifeline I will never forget.
