Uber has rolled out several major updates to its car sharing app to make it easier for its customers to integrate the service more into their lifestyles.

The new updates, which include an update to the user privacy settings, grants the user greater control over the account and strives to make co-riding an even friendlier experience.

Here are the most notable updates you should know about.

Bookmark Places with the ‘Saved Places’ Feature

Do you frequently take an Uber to the store, office, a friend’s place, or even a temporary project site?

Well, with the new ‘Saved Places’ feature on the Uber app, you can now bookmark such a destination and never have to write down an address, or ask someone “Where is that again?”

All you need to do is tap on the “Where to?” button when en route to the place you wish to bookmark then tap on “More saved places” and select the destination from the list.

You can then assign the new saved place a name (even an emoji) and forget about it until you want to go there again.

The app may even place a shortcut of the saved place on your home screen when it predicts that’s where you want to go.

This means you would just need to tap once to call an Uber.

Make Carpooling a Better Experience with ‘Suggested Drop-Offs’

Uber’s new ‘Suggested drop-offs’ feature is a great addition that people who share a ride often will love.

‘Suggested drop-offs’ is designed to make Pool rides happier and time-efficient for co-riders by using an algorithm to analyze routes and destinations in real time.

The algorithm will then suggest drop-off spots that can save you money and time.

This feature also allows you to update previous drop-off spots and find better spots from a list of suggestions by tapping a blue box on the map.

The app automatically notifies you, your co-rider, and the driver when suggestions are approved or changed.

Privacy Settings All in One Place

If you are already an Uber rider, you must have read and agreed to the company’s privacy policies when you signed up.

General Car Requirements for UBER

Does my car qualify for Uber?

Uber regularly, often annually, revises the requirements that cars must meet before they can join the company’s fleet of driver-owned ridesharing cars.

The first criteria the company uses?

The age of the car.

To qualify, your car must be the model year 2001 or later, meaning that it must be 16 years or younger.

The age requirement varies from market to market and city to city.

For instance…

The Uber vehicle requirement in Atlanta is 12 years (manufactured 2005) and in Pittsburgh, it is 2006 and 2004 for hybrid cars.

Your car must be a four-door sedan, a truck, SUV, or a minivan.

They do not consider hatchback vehicles.

UberX Car Requirements

The UberX car requirements are the most lenient.

If your car is a four-door sedan that was first registered in 2001 or later and your name is on the insurance card, then it must also meet the following requirements to be an UberX car:

It must be a personal car with in-state insurance and plates.

It must not be a marked car including advertisements and decorations.

The car must not be a taxi or a salvage car.

Should not have cosmetic damage (you might get away with minor scratches and dings).

The car should not be a passenger van, commercial vehicle, or heavy-duty truck. A regular 4 door truck may be allowed.

It must pass the Uber vehicle inspection.

Requirements for UberXL

One step above the standard, UberXL is the ideal transportation option for a group of up to six people.

To qualify to drive in this tier with your car, it must seat up to six passengers at any time and should be a minivan or an SUV type of vehicle.

If your car meets all the basic Uber vehicle requirements (including age and insurance), it must additionally meet these UberXL requirements to be considered for this tier of rides.

It must not have cosmetic damage on its body. Minor scratches and dings may be overlooked.

The vehicle cannot be a large passenger van, a commercial vehicle, or a heavy-duty truck. A regular 4 door truck may be accepted.

It must not have taxi color painting or commercial branding on it.

The car should not be from salvage.

It must pass the Uber vehicle inspection.

Pro Tip:  If your vehicle qualifies for UberXL, you can still get requests for regular UberX rides as well!  This can ensure more frequent fares, with the added benefit of padding your hourly wage with those higher-cost XL rides.

UBER Vehicle Inspection

To drive for Uber, every car must pass a rigorous inspection process carried out at any of the company’s many stations set up in cities where the company operates.

You can find the closest Uber Activation Center to you by downloading and installing the smartphone app & navigating to ‘Vehicle Inspections.’

They do not charge any fees for vehicle inspections.

The process takes about 15 to 20 minutes and it involves testing the various parts and components of the car covering:

Lights

Brakes and steering

Windows and other glass

Seats and doors

Other parts like bumpers, exhaust system, tires, speedometer etc.

Drivers whose vehicles pass the inspection receive the official sticker which they to stick on the windshield of the car.

Special UBER Vehicle Requirements

Drivers that use high end powerful and luxury cars earn much more per trip compared to the drivers of the popular standard services UberX/XL.

UberLUX is the company’s top premium car service and also the most expensive package.

Criminal record.

The Rules of Zipcar

No smoking.  Do not smoke in the car, not even with the windows and doors open.

Fill up the gas.  When returning the car, ensure that the tank is at least ¼ full. Use the fuel card inside the car to fill the tank.

Return on time.  Zipcar charges late return fees, it is, therefore, important to return the car on time as scheduled to avoid extra charges and to not inconvenience the next user.  In the case of an emergency, you should call or text ahead of time to get your reservation extended.

All pets must be kept in carriers.  When traveling with dogs or cats, they must be kept in their pet carriers at all times.

Driving Record Check

Your driving record check includes the following criteria:

Aged 21 or older, with an active U.S. driver’s license for 1+ years.

Valid personal auto insurance that meets or exceeds state requirements.

No more than three moving violations in the past three years (e.g. accidents, traffic light violations).

Lack of major violations in the past three years (e.g. driving on a suspended license, reckless driving).

No DUIs or other drug-related driving violations in the last seven years.

Lack of extreme infractions in the last seven years (e.g. hit-and-run, felonies involving a vehicle).

Your vehicle itself must be less than 12 years old, according to the model year.

These criteria do vary from city to city, so be sure to check on your specific location’s requirements before applying.

Background Check

Lyft’s background check is comprised of the following requirements.

Within the past 7 years, you mustn’t have any of these on your record:

Violent crimes

Sexual offenses

Theft

Property damage

Felonies

Drug related offenses

In addition, those who are registered on the National Sex Offender Registry and DOJ50-State Sex Offender Registry at the time the background check is conducted are not permitted to become drivers.

This is the case regardless of how long ago the individual was put on that registry.

Tips for Preparing for Your Welcome Ride

Clean your car.  Scrub, vacuum, polish, etc.

If you aren’t matched up prior to the ride, finding a mentor is still simple.  Drive into your city’s coverage area between 7am-7pm any day.  The best areas to find mentors are those busy parts of town.

Be patient.  It may take 10-20 minutes to pair you with a mentor.

Plan ahead.  There may be a fee of $20 assessed for the 19-point inspection.  This varies from city to city.  Also, this may take a total of around 45 minutes, so plan accordingly.

Lyft Driver Requirements

Lyft driver requirements are pretty straightforward.

If you meet the preconditions below then you should have no problem getting approved to become a driver for the rideshare platform.

Here are the Lyft driver requirements.

You must:

Be 21 years of age or older.

Drive a 4-door car with at least 5 seatbelts (including driver’s).

Be licensed to drive for at least 1 year prior to applying.

Carry in-state insurance with the driver’s name on the policy.

Hold a valid, in-state driver’s license.

Have in-state plates with a current registration.  Commercial plates are acceptable as well.

Maintain a clean driving record and no disqualifying criminal history.

Have an iOS or Android smartphone that meets the minimum requirements to run the latest version of the app.

In select cities, Lyft will guarantee your average hourly pay rate!

How does Lyft driver pay work?

First, you must opt-in during each pay period.

You will receive an email with guarantee hours available and will be able to opt-in through a link contained within the email.

Also…

You must maintain a weekly 90% acceptance rate to be eligible.

This is calculated by taking the number of unique ride requests you’ve accepted and completed and dividing it by the number of those requests you’ve received.

Lastly, you’ll need to complete 50 hours of rides in driver mode while fulfilling your city’s requirement for completed rides per hour.

Weekly Guarantees

For new Lyft drivers, weekly guarantees are offered in some cities.

To be eligible, you must be approved to drive in an eligible city during the promotion.

You will receive a daily summary at the end of each day detailing all of your completed rides within the previous 24-hour period (5 am-5 am).

This summary will detail the length of time, distance, and amount earned for each ride completed.

The weekly summary will be sent via email every Tuesday, which will show your final totals for each day as well as the total deposit for the week.

Lyft Driver Pay Schedule

The pay period runs from Monday through Sunday each week.

Direct deposits begin processing each week on Tuesday; they will be received by the end of each week.

In order to receive your payments, you must set up direct deposit with a compatible checking account.

Tax Information

Lyft drivers are classified as independent contractors.

As such, Lyft will provide you with a 1099 form for tax filing purposes.

If you’re a Lyft driver who gives at least 200 rides and generates at least $20,000 in gross ride receipts within the previous year, you will receive a 1099-K.

Drivers who earn a minimum of $600 from non-driving activities such as referral bonuses, mentoring, reimbursements, etc., then you will receive a 1099-MISC.

Regardless of your status in terms of forms, Lyft’s Dashboard provides a yearly summary of a driver’s statistics including the number of rides completed, gross earnings from rides, non-ride earnings, and miles driven when in driver mode.

Prime Time

During peak times when the demand for rides outnumbers drivers available, passengers may pay an additional amount over the regular ride minimum.

This prime time pricing is meant to increase your earnings during those busy times.

Passengers will be notified prior to confirming their requested ride of the added percentage.

Prime-time charges will vary based on specific supply and demand.

Drivers will not see anything different when prime time pricing is in effect, although you will see a breakdown of how much of an extra charge was added once the ride ends.

These prime time charges will also show up in green on your daily summaries.

Lyft provides real-time Heat Maps on your home screen that will show you the busiest areas where you have the best chance to receive prime time.

During some times, Lyft will provide guaranteed prime time pricing.

Enter what you wish to change your code to.

How to Continue Getting Free Uber Credit

You can refer as many people as you want to Uber!

This is something they encourage, because the more customers they have, the better.

There are a few rules, of course.

You can share it personally with anyone.

This goes for family, friends, coworkers, or even random people.

You could share your code with the barista at your morning coffee stop, or the guy you pay for parking every morning or whomever you come into contact with.

Yes!  This Uber promo is still active.  In fact, the appropriate code is listed just above this section.

What if I’m an existing user?  Can I still use a promo code for Uber?

At this time, only new users can access the current Uber promo.  However, if you haven’t tried Lyft or Sidecar yet, they have new user promotions as well.  A Lyft promo code is listed above this section for money off your first ride.

If I don’t use all of my free ride credit can I use the remaining credit on my next ride?

No, Uber credits for new users are valid for the first ride only.

Can I choose when to apply a promotion to a ride?

No, promotions are automatically applied towards the next trip you take after entering the promo code.

Can I check how much my fare will be before requesting a ride?

Yes!  Uber’s fare estimate feature allows this.  Simply set your pickup location and enter a destination.  Tap Fare Quote on your screen and the app will calculate an approximate expected fare based on the time and distance it estimates for your ride.

Do I need to tip my Uber driver?

It isn’t necessary to tip your driver, as there is a service charge included in your fare.  You are not required to tip in cash, but if you would like to tip make sure to ask your driver first. Uber does not make cashless tips possible at this time.

Is Uber free for the first ride?

There are multiple valid Uber codes for new users to get their first $15 ride credit.  We’ll keep this page updated with new ones as they become available.  Keep in mind, these promo codes are only valid for your first ride.

How do you get Uber free the first time?

Well, the allure of Uber is that everything in their system is done electronically.  So, when you have a free ride credit, it will be automatically used first rather than you being charged with your default payment method.  If your total fare ends up being more than the amount of your free ride credit, then you will be charged the difference.  You can actually track your fare using the Uber app during a ride.

Yes, all drivers have a complete background check performed on them.  However, we suggest that you verify the license plate number of the driver with the one shown in the app to confirm you’re getting in the right car.  Always share your ride information with someone close to you so that they know the license plate number and your expected arrival time in case something goes wrong.
