File Island is no longer a band, but digimon never truly die. They get reborn!

ah hey!! this is such a neat message. I wish I came on this tumblr more. Sorry that I’m answering so late!! Where are ya’ll from? 

To keep in mind, I’ve only run dog belly for a year. I still have tons to learn. (distribution, 7″/12″, site maintenance, organizing my dang room with all the shit, etc etc. i could list a million things i don’t know or do poorly. It’s not easy). 

I didn’t really have any road map at all. It was completely a joke, but my friends write incredible songs. Their talent made it less of a joke. Running a label is something I’ve always wanted to do, but I never thought it was a thing I could actually do. Having a tiny lil group of friends who wanted their music released, but weren’t pressed for time to do that really helped me get my feet wet in terms of dubbing tapes, learning what materials to get, where to order from, how to speed up the dubbing process. I’ve only recently got better at designing j-cards  with my own unique spin on it. 

Be open to learning and accepting failures. There is a learning curve with this stuff and you only get better. 

Personally, I learn best when I just dive into things and work at it, practice, accommodate to situations, etc. You can’t really read about starting a diy label, you know? Some stuff exists, but everyone probably runs it differently.

I would start off with a goal (practice putting yourself out on physical music before you do it for someone else who trusts you to do that for them). I would keep track of funds because this is NOT cheap if you don’t have expendable income.

Don’t social climb and smooze people into being released by you. There are tons and tons of indie labels and blah blah blah. Most bands who sound half-decent have already been approached you know? What i’m saying is, don’t act like you have an offer for people that they can’t refuse. You will build some cool friendships if you’re just upfront and say “hey i do this thing. let me know if you want help releasing music” idk. thats what i do. i’m not a real small business. we’re fucking sinning and burning money lol.

 I’ve been booking more shows so pictures are gonna be posted from that as well. I may run a sessions vlog thing out of my basement.

Idk. School is hard, and i’m trying to overcompensate by doing some things I like. 

hi! I came back from tour a few days ago and it will take a lot of time to process how incredible the feeling is. It’s been super affirming and real. I have the coolest friends around and sharing this experience with them is really something else. 

Our friend Kyla was kind enough to film our entire set at Fennario’s in West Chester, PA. It really means the world to us that we have this to look back at.

Hi ya'll. We made it to the 6th dog belly release! That's a teenager in tape label years.

J∆NVS is an experimental/electronic musician from Fredericksburg, Virginia. Sometimes you want to dance. Sometimes you want to brood. Sometimes you want to sway.

I went on tour this month so putting Gram's House online took more time than it should have. Regardless, I'm very happy that I was able to help out because these songs are my favorite. It's such a nice listen. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
