I'm really curious if you have any info or even opinions on this: what exactly was the legality of Dr. Finitevus as a character following the Penders lawsuits? Because technically he's the same as Scourge - a nothing character made by Penders later drastically re-invented by later creatives - but that connection was only made by Flynn after both Penders and Bollers had left the book. Finitevus is also mentioned by name post-Penders unlike other characters. Is there any complication there, or...?

Finitevus is owned by Karl Bollers, plain and simple. Ian’s retcon of him originating as a random nameless echidna extra in a Penders story doesn’t give him any basis for owning him because Ken had no input in the creation of the Dr. Finitevus persona. There’s never been any confusion there, and Ken readily says that Finitevus belongs to Karl

Because of this, Finitevus was able to survive the big Penders character purge... but then Archie realized that they didn’t have the paperwork to use any of the previous writers’ characters and went scorched earth mode with the reboot

It’s not fair to compare this to Scourge because, while the version of the character people like was created by other people, Ken still laid all the groundwork for the character by writing a ton of Anti-Sonic stories. (WAY too many, even.) Scourge wouldn’t exist if Anti-Sonic hadn’t already been a recurring character in the comics with an ongoing subplot. Finitevus being retconned into originating as Random Albion Echidna #7 is a completely different situation
